2 PARISH INFORMATION EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: The first Friday of each month from 12:00 Noon to 7pm. Exposition at 12 Noon: Adoration until 7pm: Benediction at 7:00pm BAPTISMS: All Parents must register at the rectory for the Baptism and preparation class ahead of time. English Baptisms: Are on the 1 st & 4 th Sunday of each month at 2:30 pm.. The Baptismal preparation class is required for parents and godparents and is held on the 4 th Monday of the month at 7:00pm in the rectory meeting room. (holidays excluded) Spanish Baptisms: Are on the 2 nd & 4 th Saturday of each month at 1:00 pm. The Baptismal preparation class is required for parents and godparents and is held on the Monday before Baptisms at 7:00pm in the rectory meeting room. (holidays excluded) WEDDINGS: Arrangements should be made at the rectory with a parish priest or deacon at least four months before the wedding. Normally weddings are for parishioners, but special situations will be considered. We recommend a Wedding Mass for practicing Catholics. We recommend a Wedding Ceremony for non-practicing Catholics or mixed religion couples. Both are valid marriages. A priest is necessary for a Wedding Mass. QUINCEANERA: To have a Quinceanera Mass, a candidate must have been Confirmed & received First Holy Communion. Others will have the Prayer Service & Blessing. A deacon can preside at a Prayer Service & Blessing. All Quinceaneras must be baptized as Catholic Christians. Arrangements must be made at the rectory with a priest or deacon at least two months before. FUNERALS: Arrangements can usually be made with the rectory office by the funeral director. We have the Book of Funeral Readings at the rectory for families who wish to look them over. A priest or deacon will usually attend the wake. SICK CALLS: If someone needs to be Anointed, please call the rectory when they are seriously ill. Don t wait too long! If someone homebound wishes Holy Communion, please call the rectory. A prayer for all Military Departments & Personnel involved in this war against terrorism. That the men & women return safely, & that they & their families be comforted during the passing holidays. A Special prayer for all the surviving families & friends of the victims of September 11, 2001, all around the world who will now face life without their loved ones, in a physical form A prayer for those who have lost their livelihoods, that they may rebuild & be comforted. 3 D ear friends in Sacred Heart: September is a very traditional month in Mexico, not only for the celebration of the Independence but also for the food and the colours you can see on the streets in every city. Unfortunately the violence from the cartel and the inefficiency from the civil authorities are making a deep and terrible time of insecurity and fear in many cities in Mexico. I pray J.S. Paluch Co., Inc. to the Lord that this time of insecurity can come to an end soon so the peace can come back to the streets and we can enjoy all the beautiful places Mexico has to offer to the world. This month we will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Charity, pontifically designated by Pope Benedict XV as Patroness of Cuba. I thought it would be interesting to know a little bit more about her so I did a little research for you. I hope you enjoy it. The history of the La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, began around The image is thought to have been brought by Spanish colonists from the town of Illescas, a province in Toledo, Spain where a similar image of the Virgin Mary of Charity is already well-venerated. Local legend recalls the Spanish captains who bring with them religious Marian images to guide and protect them from English pirates at sea. Two Native American or Indian brothers, Rodrigo and Juan de Hoyos, and an African slave child, Juan Moreno, set out to the Bay of Nipe for salt. They are traditionally given the moniker the "three Juans". They needed the salt for the preservation of meat at the Barajagua slaughter house, which supplied the workers and inhabitants of Santiago del Prado, now known as El Cobre. While out in the bay, a storm arose, rocking their tiny boat violently with ongoing waves. Juan, the slave, was wearing a medal with the image of the Virgin Mary. The three men began to pray for her protection. Suddenly, the skies cleared, and the storm was gone. In the distance, they saw a strange object floating in the water. They rowed towards it as the waves brought it towards them. At first they mistook it for a bird, but quickly saw that it was what seemed to be a statue of a girl. At last they were able to determine that it was a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the child Jesus on her left arm and holding a gold cross in her right hand. The statue was fastened to a board with an inscription saying "Yo Soy la Virgen de la Caridad" or "I am the Virgin of Charity." Much to their surprise, the statue remained completely dry while afloat in the water. This story is fascinating and She is a sign of love and presence of the Virgin Mary for our brothers and sisters from Cuba; with all that said, we will have a liturgical celebration in honour of La Virgen del Cobre on Sunday September 13 th, at 4 pm. Please feel free to join us in the Mass and you are also invited to pray together the Triduum on the 8 th, 9 th, and 10 th of this month at 5 pm in the Church. I keep inviting you to become a new minister in Sacred Heart, our sessions have just begun on Wednesdays at 7 pm in Marian Hall, so there is still is time to join us! After 6 years in Sacred Heart, we have received the notification that Fr. Benedict is ending his studies and the collaboration with the Archdiocese of Chicago. September will be the last month of Fr. Benedict being in Sacred Heart; we are planning a farewell reception for him on September 27 th at 10 am in Marian Hall. We thank Fr. Benedict for his presence and help to Sacred Heart all these years and we wish him a big success in his future assignments. I am really sure our community will miss his homilies. God Bless you Fr. It seems that every day the news media have yet more bad news to tell: wars, disease, terrorism, drought, social unrest, and more. Some people have stopped using clock radios to wake up in the morning, preferring a jarring buzzer to the even more jarring morning news. What more do we need before we realize that we are finite creatures, and while there is much we can do to make our world better, ultimately there is a lot that is simply not within our grasp? To this our loving God says, Be strong, fear not! We must do what we can to make our world a better and safer place, but we must also realize our limits and that our ultimate safety is in the hands of God. We can be comforted by the realization that God loves us beyond measure, and will give us every help in our efforts to make our world a loving and safe place for everyone. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Altar Servers must be in 4th Grade or older, and have received their First Holy Communion. New or gently used coats and jackets are needed for the Saint Vincent de Paul Chicago Thrift Stores weekend coat sale on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13. All coats, while supplies last, will sell for $3.00 regardless of name brand, size and style. With the help of your generous donations, we are hoping to offer hundreds of name band jackets and coats for men, women, and children at one low price for those who cannot afford to buy brand new coats. Proceeds and any left over coats from the sale will help support the St. Vincent de Paul Chicago Emergency Voucher Program. The program provides individuals and families in need with clothing, furniture, or other goods free of chard in a confidential and dignified way. The acronym RCIA stands for the Rite of Catholic (Christian) Initiation of Adults. Christian Stewardship provides a spirituality that you can take home from church, exercise at work, and express through personal involvement in the community and church. Stewardship is not job-oriented or project minded. It is a way of life for a lifetime. Christian Stewardship takes a positive view on money. It sees money not only as a medium of exchange, but as a symbol of a person who has it. The way we acquire it, use it, and share it, we are revealed in those actions. Christian Stewardship trains us to become aware that God is the ultimate giver of the gifts we have. To give to God should be from the top - not from what may be left over. Q ueridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: Septiembre es un mes muy tradicional en México, no sólo para la celebración de la Independencia, sino también por la comida y los colores se pueden ver en las calles de todas las ciudades. Por desgracia, la violencia del cártel y la ineficiencia de las autoridades civiles están haciendo un tiempo terrible de inseguridad y temor en muchas ciudades de México. Ruego al Señor que este tiempo de inseguridad puede llegar a su fin pronto para que la paz pueda volver a las calles y podamos disfrutar de todos los lugares hermosos que México tiene para ofrecer al mundo. Este mes vamos a celebrar la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, pontificalmente designada por el Papa Benedicto XV como Patrona de Cuba. Pensé que sería interesante saber un poco más sobre ella, así que hice un poco de investigación para ustedes. Espero que lo disfruten. La historia de La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, comenzó alrededor de La imagen se cree que fue traída por los colonizadores españoles de la localidad de Illescas, provincia de Toledo, España, donde una imagen similar de la Virgen María de la Caridad es ya venerada. La leyenda local recuerda los capitanes españoles que traían consigo las imágenes religiosas marianas para orientarse y protegerse de los piratas ingleses en el mar. Dos hermanos americanos o indios nativos, Rodrigo y Juan de Hoyos, y un hijo de esclavos africanos, Juan Moreno, se dispuso a la Bahía de Nipe para recoger sal. Necesitaban la sal para la preservación de la carne en la casa rastro Barajagua, que suministra a los trabajadores y habitantes de Santiago del Prado, ahora conocido como El Cobre. Esta historia es fascinante y Ella es un signo de amor y de presencia de la Virgen María para nuestros hermanos y hermanas de Cuba; dicho esto, vamos a tener una celebración litúrgica en honor de "La Virgen del Cobre", el domingo 13 de septiembre, a las 4 pm. Por favor, unase a nosotros en la masa y también les invitamos a rezar juntos el "Triduo" los días 8, 9 y 10 de este mes a las 5 pm en la Iglesia. Después de 6 años en el Sagrado Corazón, hemos recibido la notificación de que el P. Benedicto está terminando sus estudios y la colaboración con la Arquidiócesis de Chicago. Septiembre será el último mes del P. Benedicto XVI en nuestra Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón; estamos planeando una recepción de despedida para él el 27 de septiembre a las 10 am en Marian Hall. Agradecemos al P. Benedicto por su presencia y ayuda al Sagrado Corazón de todos estos años y le deseamos un gran éxito en sus futuras tareas.
