RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO Introducción La industria de los materiales compuestos está creciendo progresivamente. Hay muchos métodos diferentes para la construcción de una pieza de materiales compuestos. La elección sobre el uso de cualquiera de ellos depende de los requisitos de la parte final. Algunos métodos darán un mejor resultado en términos de resistencia y rigidez, pero tienen un acabado ligeramente peor, o tienen un precio demasiado elevado. El Instituto de Compuestos de Carbono de la Universidad Técnica de Múnich desea construir dos prototipos, uno por medio de drapeado e infiltración y el otro construido con Automated Fiber Placement. Ambos deben ser curados al final del proceso. Los dos procesos están representados en el siguiente gráfico. Imagen 1. Cadenas de procesos 1

2 Tras la construcción de los dos prototipos se realiza un análisis de estructura cuyos resultados se compararán con aquellos obtenidos mediante la simulación de la producción de los prototipos. Estos prototipos deberán tener la misma geometría. Los procesos se simularán y validaran comparando resultados con los ensayos realizados en los prototipos. El objetivo de este trabajo es crear un catálogo con todos los requisitos para la simulación y diseñar una geometría que se adapta a todos los procesos y cadenas de proceso. El coste de la construcción de los dos prototipos se calcula al final del trabajo, con el fin de que el Instituto de Compuestos de Carbono pueda decidir, después de crear y probar los manifestantes, que cadena de proceso es económicamente más viable para ciertos requisitos. Metodología El desarrollo de este proyecto ha llevado 19 semanas completas. Las seis primeras semanas se emplearon casi exclusivamente en la obtención de información sobre el tema de los materiales compuestos, en especial de los compuestos de carbono. A continuación se utilizaron cinco semanas para la creación del catálogo de requisitos para la construcción de los prototipos. Para ello, se examinó que parámetros influyen más en la resistencia y rigidez de un objeto confeccionado con compuestos de carbono. También se apuntaron los requisitos para la construcción del molde y que parámetros se deberán utilizar para la simulación de los distintos procesos. Los datos obtenidos en la simulación se compararán con los datos obtenidos mediante distintos ensayos en los prototipos, una vez construidos. Los instrumentos necesarios para la medición de los resultados se encuentran también en el catálogo de requisitos. La estimación de costes llevó cinco semanas en total. Se utilizó un método cualitativo analítico de desglose de costes (Break down approach) e información histórica y de proveedores. Se dividen los costes totales en diferentes grupos y se calcula el coste por separado. 2

4 Conclusiones Debido a las particularidades de cada proceso y las limitaciones que posee la máquina de Automated Fiber Placement, es imposible construir un prototipo con ese método que nos permita obtener los resultados deseados. Esto sucede porque para realizar ensayos de cizalladura necesitamos un prototipo con una geometría relativamente complicada y con doble curvatura. Lamentablemente, la máquina de Automated Fiber Placement es incapaz de generar semejante geometría. Por tanto, uno de los objetivos principales del proyecto no se obtiene. Por otro lado resulta más barato construir la pieza mediante drapeado, en particular mediante drapeado a mano, porque aunque aumenta el coste de mano de obra, los costes de moldaje se reducen a la mitad. 4

There are many different technologies and combination of technologies for building a composite part. The choice on using any one of them depends on the requisites for the final part. Some methods will give out a better result in terms of strength and stiffness, but have a slightly worse finish, or be very expensive. The Institute of Carbon Composites wishes to build two demonstrators, one built through draping and infiltration and the other built with Automated Fiber Placement. Both have to be cured at the end of each chain of processes. The two chains of processes are depicted in the following graph. Image 1. Process chains 1

6 These demonstrators are meant to have the same geometry. The processes will be simulated and then validated on the demonstrators, and the results compared to one another. The aim of this work is to create a catalog with all the requirements for the simulation and devise a geometry that fits all processes and process chains. The cost of building both demonstrators is calculated at the end of the paper, in order that the LCC can decide, after creating and testing the demonstrators, which process chain is more economically viable for certain requisites. Methodology The development of this project has taken 19 complete weeks. The first six weeks were used almost exclusively in obtaining information on the subject of composite materials, especially carbon composites. Then, five weeks were used to create the catalog of requirements for building prototypes. To accomplish this, we examined which parameters affect the most the strength and stiffness of a carbon composite piece. The requirements for the construction of the mold were also collected, and so were the parameters that should be used for the simulation of different processes. The data obtained in the simulation will be compared with the data obtained through different tests on prototypes, once they are built. The necessary tools for measuring results are also found in the catalog of requirements. The estimation of costs took five weeks. A qualitative analytical method of breakdown of costs (Break down approach) was used and the information was obtained through historical records and suppliers. Total costs are divided into different groups and the cost is calculated separately. 2

8 Conclusions Due to the particularities of each process and the limitations of the Automated Fiber Placement machine it is impossible to build a prototype for this method that allows us to obtain the desired results. This is because for testing shear on the demonstrator we need a relatively complicated geometry with double curvature. Unfortunately, the Automated Fiber Placement machine is unable to generate such a geometry. Therefore, one of the main objectives of the project is not obtained. On the other hand it is cheaper to build the piece by draping, particularly by Hand Layup because although it increases the cost of labor, tooling costs are reduced by half. 4
