2 Dear Family, Your child is learning to write a cause-and-effect report. The goal is to explore the effects of an event in nature and explain them clearly. Throughout the writing process, your child will be learning about six qualities of writing called the Writing Traits. The traits are Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. As students use these six traits, they become better thinkers and writers in all their classes. The writing process includes these five steps: 1. Prewrite: First, your child will choose a condition in nature that causes certain effects. Ask your child to explain what he or she will write about. Talking through ideas will help clarify them before writing. To prepare for writing, your child will organize notes about the topic in a Cause-and-Effect Chain. 2. Draft: Next, your child will use the Cause-and-Effect Chain to draft an essay containing a concise thesis statement that reflects his or her purpose for writing. 3. Revise: Your child will then make sure the ideas are in order, a formal style is used, and any unfamiliar terms or jargon are explained clearly by definition or explanation. 4. Edit: At this stage, your child will edit for proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, focusing on the correct use of apostrophes and commas. 5. Publish: Finally, your child will use a checklist to prepare and publish a final copy in class. If you have any questions as you help your child write a cause-and-effect report, please let me know. Thank you for your help in the writing process. Sincerely, Strategies for Writers Grade 7 n Informative/Explanatory Writing n Cause-and-Effect Report
4 Dear Family, Your child is learning to write a research report. This will give your child an opportunity to hone his or her research skills and share the information he or she discovers. Prewrite: Your child will choose a topic, gather research, and organize information. Then he or she will organize the notes into an Outline. 2. Draft: Next, your child will use the Outline to write a draft with a strong introduction, body, and conclusion that guides the reader through the writing. 3. Revise: Your child will then add quotes and information from experts, make sure borrowed information is accurately paraphrased, and create sentence variety by breaking up long, wordy sentences. 4. Edit: Your child will correct errors in spelling, grammar, and capitalization, paying special attention to proper nouns and adjectives, abbreviations, initials, and titles. 5. Publish: Finally, your child will use a checklist to prepare and publish a final copy in class. Emphasize the importance of including credit for information or quotations picked up from other sources. Plagiarism, the use of someone else s ideas without proper credit, must be avoided. Please let me know if you have any questions about your child s writing. Thank you for your help in the writing process. 6 Dear Family, Your child is learning to write a summary. The goal is to show his or her understanding of an article by writing a concise yet informative summary. The ability to summarize clearly is an important reading, writing, and thinking skill. Prewrite: Your child will read an article and take notes for a summary. The notes should include only the most important ideas and details from the article. Help build your child s summarizing skills by asking him or her to summarize a movie or a book telling only the most important ideas. 2. Draft: Next your child will use his or her notes to draft a summary, maintaining consistency in style and tone. Help your child understand that a draft is not meant to be perfect. Students will be able to shape and improve their writing gradually, using writing strategies based on the Writing Traits. 3. Revise: Though a summary is brief by definition, the ideas must be clear. Your child will improve the ideas by deleting information that is irrelevant. Your child will improve the expression of ideas by eliminating wordiness and using punctuation effectively. 4. Edit: Students will correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, paying particular attention to inappropriate shifts in pronoun number and person. 5. Publish: Finally, your child will use a checklist to prepare and publish a final copy in class. If you have any questions as you help your child write a summary, please let me know. Together, we ll help your child see that writing can be rewarding. Thank you for your help in the writing process. Writing this kind of essay will develop analytical thinking skills. Prewrite: Your child will choose and narrow a problem that has multiple solutions. Some research will be required to explore the solutions and decide which ones to include in the essay. You can help by providing access to print and online sources either at home or at the library. 2. Draft: Next your child will use notes to draft a problem-solution essay. Students will be guided to present their problems and solutions in an order that makes sense. 3. Revise: Your child will improve the draft by revising. In this chapter, he or she will focus on using concrete and credible details, appropriate transitions to clarify relationships among ideas, and parallel sentence structures to emphasize relationships. 4. Edit: The impact of the ideas will be lost if words are misspelled or punctuation is missing. At this stage, your child will correct errors in spelling, grammar, and capitalization, paying special attention to inappropriate shifts in verb tense. 5. Publish: Finally your child will use a checklist to prepare and publish a final copy in class. If you have any questions as you help your child write a problem-solution essay, please let me know. 10 Dear Family, Your child is learning to take a timed writing test. The goal is to learn how to write a cause-and-effect report in a classroom testing situation. The topic of the report is your child s saving and spending habits. The writing process includes these five steps: 1. Prewrite: Students will study a test prompt carefully to understand the type of writing required and what topic to write about. Then they will organize notes about a favorite meal. An important part of preparing to write for a test is taking time to evaluate how well the notes and their organization match the test prompt. Spending time preparing to write is time well spent. 2. Draft: If students have done a good job preparing to write, they should be able to create a draft that closely matches the test prompt. In a testing situation, the drafting has to be close to the final product because there will be a limited amount of time to perfect it. 3. Revise: Students should be sure to leave some time for revising their writing. During a test, they will have to be mindful of using their time carefully. 4. Edit: Students will spend the last part of the timed writing test checking their writing for common errors in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. Encourage your child not to worry about the imperfect appearance of a writing test. The pages won t look as neat as usual, and it s fine for students to make corrections right on the page. One of the goals of this chapter is to make test writing less intimidating by showing students that they already possess the knowledge and ability to do well on a test. Please be sure to share your thoughts or questions with me. Thank you for your help in the writing process. Sincerely, Strategies for Writers Grade 7 n Informative/Explanatory Writing n Test Writing
