Ya que abril es el mes oficial para crear conciencia sobre el autismo, Any Baby Can ha realizado la caminata contra el autismo en San Antonio por los últimos 11 años durante este mes. Sin embargo, por primera vez decidieron oficialmente unirse a la tradición de Fiesta para así expandir el evento y hacerlo más inclusivo. ChildSafe, Bexar County s only Children s Advocacy Center, kicked off National Child Abuse Prevention Month on Thursday, with the help of organizations and individuals like District Attorney Nico LaHood, the San Antonio Police Department, and the Cardboard Kids. Unfortunately, child abuse occurs across every demographic; it knows no boundaries, it happens everywhere, said Kim Abernethy, ChildSafe CEO. So ChildSafe created Cardboard Kids to illustrate the pervasiveness of the issue and the fact that every story is different and every child unique, she said. Now in its second year, the Cardboard Kids continue to put a face on child abuse and neglect issues. How do you want your community to look? Whatever the answer, SA Tomorrow wants the input of city residents throughout the planning process. SA Tomorrow kicks off their public outreach efforts on Saturday at the Alamo Convocation Center, with opportunities for families and individuals to voice their opinions on what the city needs to successfully grow. According to a study analysis released on Wednesday, the most cost-effective method of growth for the City budget would be to develop San Antonio within its existing city limits. Leopoldo López Todas las mañanas, a las 5:30, Jorge Ramos Lilian Tintori se levanta a rezar y a leer la Biblia. Exactamente a la misma hora, su esposo, el preso político Leopoldo López, hace lo mismo en la cárcel de Ramo Verde en Venezuela. Eso acordaron antes que lo detuvieran hace más de un año. Así, todos los días y a la misma hora, Lilian y Leopoldo se conectan. A Tintori le ha tocado hablar por López porque a López no lo dejan hablar. El gobernante, Nicolás Maduro, nunca le perdonó a López haber liderado las protestas de febrero del 2014 que casi tumban al régimen. Le inventaron cuatro cargos daños a propiedad, incendios, asociación para delinquir e instigación pública y poco después López se entregó a las autoridades. Su juicio es una farsa. Varias organizaciones de derechos humanos, incluyendo a Amnistía Internacional y Human Rights Watch, consideran que su arresto es injustificado; es el vil y burdo intento de Maduro de reprimir al principal líder opositor. Pero Maduro se equivocó dos veces. La primera, al crear un La esposa rebelde mártir. No son pocos los que comparan el arresto de Maduro con el de Nelson Mandela en Sudáfrica, y todos sabemos cómo acaba esa historia. La segunda equivocación de Maduro fue menospreciar a Tintori. Nunca sospechó que la esposa de López sería tan combativa como él. Ese fue un grave error de cálculo. Tintori ha mantenido viva la memoria, el sacrificio y la misión de López. Pelea todas las peleas dentro de Venezuela. Y no hay foro internacional donde no aparezca. Así, Tintori, la esposa rebelde, se ha convertido en una de las principales amenazas a la dictadura madurista. La valentía de Tintori contrasta con la cobardía de los presidentes latinoamericanos que no se atreven a criticar las violaciones a los derechos humanos y a la democracia en Venezuela. (Su silencio cómplice en la Cumbre de las Américas en Panamá es vergonzoso). Tintori no para de hablar de López. Cuando la entrevisté hace poco en Miami, denunció torturas en la cárcel. A principios de este año, Antonio Ledezma, alcalde de Caracas, fue arrestado, acusado de haber participado en un intento de golpe contra Maduro, acusación que organizaciones de defensa de los derechos humanos también han denunciado. Tintori dice que la celda de López en la prisión fue invadida y registrada el mismo día que Ledezma fue puesto bajo custodia. Entraron hombres armados y destrozaron su espacio, se robaron sus memorias: Todo lo que él escribe se lo robaron. Siete horas duró esta requisa, y lo metieron en una celda de castigo que se llama El Tigrito, me dijo. Una noche, a la 1 de la mañana, le lanzaron por la ventana de su celda excremento humano y orina. Le cortaron el agua y la luz para que no se pudiera bañar. Eso es un trato absolutamente inhumano, de tortura. Venezuela tiene uno de los niveles de inflación y criminalidad más altos del continente. La brutal caída en los precios del petróleo y el desabastecimiento la han convertido en una nación de muchas filas y aún mayor frustración. La pregunta, la gran pregunta en Venezuela, es cómo salir de este desastre de una manera legal? Maduro no va a renunciar, le digo a Tintori. Ojalá renunciara si quisiera a Venezuela, me responde. El sistema fracasó. Es un sistema antidemocrático que fracasó. Así, una de las pocas opciones legales es realizar un referéndum revocatorio. Hasta el mismo Maduro lo sabe. Deben recoger sus firmas en el 2016 y medirse en un referéndum revocatorio, le dijo a la oposición. El problema es que el organismo que cuenta los votos en Venezuela también está controlado por Maduro. Mientras tanto, a Maduro le incomoda y mucho López y su esposa. Antes que Leopoldo se entregara, Maduro les ofreció irse del país. Que por favor se fuera de Venezuela, que el avión estaba listo, recordó Tintori. Esto fue un mensaje que nos mandó Maduro directamente a mi casa. Le dijimos no. Maduro se equivoca si cree que Tintori se va a dar por vencida. Yo me casé con Leopoldo, me dice, y me casé con su compromiso de una mejor Venezuela. No voy a parar. No voy a parar. Tintori no está sola. Otras esposas de presos políticos, como Mitzy Capriles de Ledezma, esposa de Antonio Ledezma, también están dando la batalla por la libertad y la democracia. Parece ser que en Venezuela, un país tan matriarcal, serán las mujeres, otra vez, las que encuentren una solución a esta crisis. En eso piensa Tintori todos los días a las 5:30 de la mañana. With just four days to the beginning of Fiesta 2015, the thrill of another Fiesta brings back Steve Walker many memories of past Fiestas for me. I find myself once again reminiscing about the past celebrations I have been fortunate to be an active participant in over the last 30 years downtown during Viva Fiesta. As a past President of the San Antonio Junior Chamber of Commerce, (aka Jaycees), I was honored to ride in one of the many floats in the Battle of Flowers Parade as well as the River Parade in In 1983 during my term as Chairman of the Board, I did it again. Sometimes I cover different events, especially when new ones are added to the schedule as other groups no longer participate. One event I am especially partial to covering since I can t cover them all is the St. Gregory s Catholic Church Festival. As a graduate of St. Gregory s in 1960 from 8th grade, I admit I do tend to favor that particular event. Staff members also work with Child Protective Services, the San Antonio Police Department and legal staff to bring offenders to justice. In 2014, there were 5,434 confirmed cases of child abuse in Bexar County and 12 child deaths from abuse in Although those numbers showed a slight decrease from the previous year, the numbers are still too high. (continued from page 1-A) Child abuse is an issue that is too big for one agency to tackle, rather we as a community must rally together to learn how to identify it, report it and zealously punish those who target and harm our most vulnerable citizens, Abernethy said. Peak Greenway Trails System to Alazán Creek. The Alazán Creek Linear Trail, which has a planned completion date of spring 2016, will be a 10-foot-wide paved path for walkers, runners and cyclists. The Alazán Creek hike and bike trail improvements had a special groundbreaking ceremony this past week at the Casting Pond located at Woodlawn Lake Park. The trail will join the 46 miles of an ever-growing network of multi-use hike and bike trails of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System. Franco Fiesta San Antonio 2015 se estará desarrollando del jueves 16 al domingo 26 de abril, en lo que serán 124 ediciones desde su creación que data desde el año de Esto hace a la ciudad de El Álamo ser huésped de una celebración de gran tradición que se celebra en el país. San Antonio es una municipalidad cuyo mayor sostenimiento económico es la industria hotelera, en la que su engranaje principal es su gente, que gusta sobresalir exponiendo el prestigio y las oportunidades de lograr una mejor calidad de vida. Por estas fechas todos estaremos echando la casa por la ventana, tal y como lo hacemos durante el año en las diversas festividades que celebramos. Esto a través de una gama de actividades gastronómicas, culturales, deportivas y artesanales. Lo principal de Fiesta San Antonio son sus tres magnos desfiles: el Texas Cavaliers River Parade, Battle of Flowers Parade y Flambeau Parade, a los que se acompaña el buen comer y los brindis con bebidas azucaradas y de contenido alcohólico. Es aquí en donde mi recomendación es en general para toda persona adulta que estará disfrutando de las maravillas en los desfiles mencionados, así como en otras actividades y eventos que por tradición se presentan durante los once días de Fiesta San Antonio. Si deciden saborear los diversos platillos que se estarán vendiendo en puestos ubicados en la vía Disfruten Fiesta en buena salud pública, por igual bebidas preparadas azucaradas (aguas frescas), cómanlas y bébanlas en porciones medianas. Luego, para quemar calorías y recuperar sobriedad, hagan recorridos visitando los atractivos que estarán ubicados en los puntos marcados dentro de Fiesta San Antonio. Si los bocadillos y bebidas consumidas les cayeron bien y no les dieron molestias estomacales, entonces todo estará bien para que continúen celebrando Fiesta. En caso de consumir bebidas de contenido alcohólico, háganlo con moderación, especialmente si les acompañan menores de edad, no los dejen solos, también procuren asegurarse qué tipo de golosinas o bocadillos estarán comiendo, para así evitarse visitas a las salas de emergencia. Esto lo digo con certeza, ya que en mis años de tomador, cada vez que llevé a mi hijo a Fiesta San Antonio, él gustaba pasear en casi todos los atractivos de acuerdo a su edad. También se engolosinaba con las coloridas raspas, algodón de azúcar, lo cual le quitaba el hambre y comía poca comida. Yo, como es tradición, tomaba una cerveza en cada puesto, cuando recorríamos los atractivos que comenzaban frente al restaurante Pico de Gallo y finalizaban en la Catedral de San Fernando. Mi hijo iba con la barriga bien endulzada y yo con el cerebro atrofiado porque no media las consecuencias en el consumo de las chelas, que por el calor bebía una tras otra. Hubo ocasiones en que tuve que llevar a mi hijo a la sala de emergencia del Hospital Santa Rosa, donde se le llegó a dar asistencia médica por empacho. A mí el único daño que me hacía el alto consumo de bebidas embriagantes eran las tremendas crudas, acompañadas de ansiedad y pésimo sabor de boca. Con el paso de los años, mi hijo, al cumplir los 10 años, decidió no ir más a los festejos de Fiesta, porque yo había dejado de tomar, y él ya tenía otros pasatiempos para divertirse durante el periodo del tradicional festejo que en verdad nos dejó bonitos recuerdos a pesar de los malestares que ambos padecimos. Lo mejor de todo fue que durante los años que mi hijo y yo disfrutamos juntos de Fiesta, gustábamos viajar de casa al centro en el bus, para así no correr el riesgo de que yo ya tomado manejara o nos llegaran a causar daño otros conductores en estado de ebriedad. En estas celebraciones de Fiesta San Antonio 2015, los invito a que se diviertan a más no poder, disfruten de todos los atractivos, comidas y bebidas. Si toman, por favor no conduzcan sus automóviles o motocicletas, todo parece fácil, pero la verdad es otra, en caso de ser detenidos por sospechas de ir conduciendo bajo estado etílico, las autoridades correspondientes estarán al tanto resguardando la seguridad pública. Conducir bajo la influencia de bebidas alcohólicas es también una enfermedad que nos puede llevar no solo al hospital, sino a la quiebra personal y emocional. An adult who was abused as a child often has trouble establishing lasting and stable personal relationships. These men and women may have trouble with physical closeness, touching, intimacy, and trust as adults. They are also at higher risk for anxiety, depression, substance abuse, medical illness, and problems at school or work. Early identification and treatment is important to minimize the long-term consequences of abuse. Qualified mental health professionals should conduct a comprehensive evaluation and provide treatment for children who have been abused. Through treatment, the abused child begins to regain a sense of self-confidence and trust. The family can also be helped to learn new ways of support and communicating with one another. Parents may also benefit from support, parent training and anger management. Physical abuse is not the only kind of child abuse. Many children are also victims of neglect, or sexual abuse, or emotional abuse. Coach Mike Kzryzweski or Coach K is arguably one of the greatest coaches of all time due to his success not only leading Team USA to two recent gold medals, but leading his team at Duke to yet another NCAA championship. The hall of fame coach won his fifth championship as head coach at Duke and it s a triumphant return to the top after taking some scrutiny from fans after the early tournament loss to Mercer last year. The three time Naismith College coach of the year has over 1,000 wins under his belt along with two FIBA World Championship gold medals along with two bronze medals. Coach K has read the pinnacle of his career. While having accomplished everything there is to accomplish as a coach he loves the game and will continue to prove his dominance in the NCAA and land a couple of future NBA star recruits along the way. The UConn women s team has reigned supreme in women s college basketball for the past decade with head coach Geno Auriemma. The six time Naismith college coach of the year award winner won his 10th championship with his lady huskies the fourth within the past three years. Auriemma has been loved by many but also made into a villain due to his success. He s been a coach not to shy away from the media which has made many other coaches seem to not take his confidence lightly. UConn defeated recent rival the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Coach Muffet McGraw and former Tennessee university coach Pat Summit have popular rivalries with Auriemma. Summit, before her retirement due to Alzheimer s, had a heated rivalry since the early 1990 s, Auriemma has the more recent success and has since turned his fighting words to Coach McGraw. Although having feuds with other coaches there is no denying his career success. He joins former legendary UCLA Men s Coach John Wooden to have 10 championships. Along with two Olympic gold medal s coaching the Women s Team USA, he is inducted in three halls of fame. Coach K and Coach Auriemma have dominated college basketball and don t look to slow down just yet. Time will tell just how many more championships they ll decide to win but for now, they celebrate their recent success and begin to focus on next season. (Photo, Franco) Special to La Prensa The Spurs foundation Silver & Black Give Back (SBGB) recently named five student-led groups as this year s Team Up Challenge Champions awarding $20,000 to each. Last fall, 20 Team Up Challenge semifinalists received $2,500 to help start their service learning projects. The five Champions were selected based on presentations made to the Team Up Challenge review committee, online voting and overall commitment to making a community impact over the course of the academic year Team Up Challenge Champions: Colonial Hills Elementary School (NEISD): Noticing a need for access to resources on healthy eating and physical activity in the area, Colonial Hills Giving Back hosted four community outreach events throughout the year. Each event was a fun way to educate their community on healthy living and benefitted a local organization. The students at Colonial Hills Elementary asked that those attending each event bring an item to be donated to an organization in need such as the San Antonio Food Bank. With the $20,000 the group plans to improve the school s field and create walking trails for school and community use. Constructions Careers Academy (NISD): The students at Construction Career Academy applied their construction skills to a series of shipping containers, creating living quarters to be presented to the community at the Parade of Homes. Each container had a theme: ADA Complaint, Green Energy, Indoor-Outdoor Living (double container), and the Man Cave using Smart Technology. Franco El tercero y cuarto lugar se definió entre los equipos Cardenales y O s, que finalizaron la temporada invernal empatados con marca de 9 victorias por 5 derrotas. El mejor promedio de juego fue de O s, que dirige el exmanager colegial Omar Ramírez, que superó por escaso margen a los Cardenales del timonel y exjugador profesional Saúl Navejar. Tras definirse la tabla, Gonzalo Chalo Carramán, fundador y presidente de Liga Regional Veteranos Carramán, dio luz verde para que de una vez por todas este sábado 11 de abril si el clima lo permite arranquen las series del playoff en el diamante Colt 45 Baseball Field, donde los equipos contendientes estarán disputando tres partidos. Los que obtengan un par de victorias se clasificarán a la ronda por el campeonato del playoff de la temporada in- vernal dedicada a los esposos Linda y Roberto Garza, propietarios del club Broncos de Reynosa S.A. 14 4-B La Prensa de San Antonio 12 de abril de 2015 Father David Garcia celebrates 40 years of priesthood By Carol Baass Sowa Today s Catholic Father David Garcia, whose boundless passion and enthusiasm for a variety of priestly assignments over the years has aptly earned him the Energizer Bunny moniker, celebrated 40 years in the priesthood on March 20 at St. Luke Church. Concelebrating the Mass were Bishop Gerald Barnes of the Diocese of San Bernardino, Father Virgil Elizondo and Msgr. Michael Boulette, in the presence Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Amarillo John W. Yanta, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Thomas J. Flanagan and many fellow priests, family members and friends. Reflections and thanks for Father Garcia s work began with Father Elizondo s homily, which referred to his priestly heart, noting that while he had accomplished many wonderful things, Father Garcia had always held his greatest honor to be that of priest of Jesus Christ. I have thanked the Lord for your priesthood on many occasions, said Archbishop Gustavo to Father Garcia at the final blessing, noting his genuine love of the local church and its history. I have fallen in love with the Archdiocese of San Antonio because of you, he said. Master of ceremonies, Father James Barlow, pastor at St. Luke, recalled camping trips with him in their younger years and introduced Msgr. Those of us who have known you for decades, David, he said, know beyond any reasonable doubt that you have met this Lord and he is the reason why your priesthood has meant so much to us. His priesthood has also been dedicated to the faithful, he observed, noting, We have watched you love the people of God with your whole life. Lastly, as a member of the ordained priesthood, Father Garcia has evidenced his devotion to sacred duty, Msgr. Boulette related, administering the sacraments to the faithful and ministering to all with whom he comes in contact. To each of us, you have decided we are precious children of God, an image of Jesus, he said. We thank God for you, and you for the journey of faithfulness. Father Garcia s five sisters stood together at the podium to speak about their brother. Lionel Sosa, a friend since Father Garcia s days as rector of San Fernando Cathedral, rounded out the speeches by recalling the priest s phenomenal fundraising abilities, having overseen the cathedral s restoration, followed by restoration of missions Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada, projects involving millions of dollars. He accomplished this, said Sosa, by stepping out of the parish and into the community, because he knows he s got a great word to put out the word of God, the word that must be heard by everyone. Last to speak was Father Garcia himself, who reflected on his 40 years in the priesthood. We can live our lives in one of two ways, he said: As if nothing were a miracle or as if everything is a miracle. He was there to testify to the latter, recalling how, as a 4-yearold, he had dashed across Houston Street, narrowly avoiding being hit by car which came to a stop inches from him. Due to a speech defect, he related, he was teased mercilessly by his kindergarten classmates and begged his mother not to make him go to school anymore. Instead, she took him the newly founded Harry Jersig Speech Therapy Center at Our Lady of the Lake College, where Sister Mary Arthur Carrow, a speech therapist, patiently worked with him for six months. I haven t stopped talking since, he quipped. Especially significant in his life and priesthood, he related, were his extraordinary parents, Dionisio and Emma Vela Garcia. Both came from the Valley and had roots that reached back to Spanish Colonial days. His father s ancestors received a land grant from the king of Spain in 1750, which is still owned by their descendents. However, by the time his father s family moved to San Antonio, they were struggling with poverty. Dionisio was the first and only boy in his family to go to college (thanks to an older brother s help) and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, as a pharmacist in 1941, a time when most of the Hispanics at UT came from wealthy families in Mexico or South America. Eventually he had his own business. Father Garcia s maternal grandmother was widowed while in her 40s in Port Lavaca, but managed to raise a family of nine on her own during the Great Depression, su inercia esta rueda sin fin. His mother was involved in various parish organizations in St. Paul Parish and got him into everything from altar boys to Little League to Boy Scouts. There s something about mothers that stays inside of you all your life, he mused. I know I have Mom inside of me, and for that I am so grateful. He thanked the many family members who had traveled to be there that night for their part in his life and the priests, brothers and sisters who had taught him at St. Martin Hall, St. Paul, St. Henry and Notre Dame. All of them helped to form me, he said. The priests and sisters he has worked with have also left a lasting impression on him, he related, and he recognized the presence of Bishop Jerry Barnes, a close friend from seminary days, and remembered Archbishop Patrick F. Flores, whom he had served as secretary, calling him my second 115 Main Plaza Downtown father and the one who showed him what true servant leadership and humility is all about. All men and women religious present were asked to stand and be recognized, as were past and present public officials. Father Garcia related he was as excited to be a priest that day as he was at his ordination and on the day he entered St. John s Seminary 52 years before the place that formed his priesthood. What comes around goes around, he said. I m now part of the team that the archbishop has set up to work on a project to restore some of the buildings at St. John s for future use related to church work and the missions. His final words were on the inspiration he receives from Pope Francis and thoughts of the hundreds of millions of our sisters and brothers in need throughout the world, along with a sobering thought on the need to encourage vocations. In the next five years, he said, half of all the active priests in the United States will retire. We need to invite the best and brightest to consider this life today. The closing prayer was given by José and Mary Vasquez, the first couple at whose marriage Father Garcia had officiated. Dear God, they prayed, we thank you for the spiritual presence of David s parents, Dionisio and Emma Garcia at this celebration. Por eso también escribe el incomparable proverbista: Como naranjas de oro con incrustaciones de plata son las palabras dichas a tiempo. A la inversa, las palabras malas y dañinas son igualmente perjudiciales. Sobre este poder de las palabras se pronuncia de manera tajante el apóstol Santiago. Por una parte juzga que la lengua es un mundo de maldad que contamina todo el cuerpo, un fuego que a su vez incendia todo el curso de la vida, un mal irrefrenable, lleno de veneno mortal. Pero por la otra concluye que, así como con la lengua maldecimos a las personas, creadas a imagen de Dios, también con ella bendecimos a nuestro Señor. De veras nos interesa conservar la salud física? Si es así, debemos reconocer que la salud espiritual es muchísimo más importante porque es eterna. Para tener esa salud espiritual basta con que acatemos las palabras de San Pablo, que dijo: Si confiesas con tu boca que Jesús es el Señor, y crees en tu corazón que Dios lo levantó de entre los muertos, serás salvo. Es solo cuestión de reconocer a Jesucristo como Señor de nuestra vida. Una vez que hayamos empleado la lengua para tomar esa decisión sin igual, vamos a querer emplearla, como señala Santiago, para bendecir a nuestro Señor. Highlands High School (SAISD): After seeing and excess of stray animals in their neighborhood and at Southside Lions Park, students in the Voices for Animals programs at Highlands High School met with District 3 City Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran and worked together to create a mobile vaccination event at the school. On January 24, over 200 pets received free rabies vaccinations and more than 60 animals were signed up to be spayed or neutered. Each pet also received complimentary bags of food, treats and nail trims form the group. Throughout the project, Voices for Animals rescued and found homes for eight dogs and two cats, and helped reunite a dog with his owner. With the $20,000 the group will create toolkits that will help other schools implement the project on their neighborhoods, and will continue to assist a local animal shelter with veterinary, grooming, and food costs for dogs rescued from Southside Lions Park. Mead Elementary School (NISD): The Student Council Medical Center intersection improvements celebrated By Melissa S. Sparks Councilman Ron Nirenberg of District 8 joined area organizations and City officials in celebrating the end of a project to improve the Hamilton Wolfe and Babcock intersection in the Medical Center. The Medical Center Intersection Improvements Phase IX project was funded through the Bond Program. The Medical Center is a hub of economic growth for San Antonio and all of South helped take learning beyond the classroom by designing a mobile library called Sweet Stories for their community. The group planned the library by ordering books, designing an official logo, and marketing on social media sites. Unique to the library are fiction and non-fiction stories published by the students, who also held storytelling events to promote literacy. With the $20,000 the Mead Elementary Student Council plans to purchase a small truck to house the library, and will buy physical books as well as ipads for digital books. The team also plans to purchase outdoor seating for mobile library events. Stevens High School (NISD): Stevens High School s Transformers The Fit Falcons is a team constructed from a variety of students on campus that wanted to make a difference in their community. The group crafted a Biggest Loser-style competition between students, staff and community members and earned experience as student personal trainers. The Fit Falcons offered free classes to the community on résumé building, financial education, continuing education resources, computer classes, and nutrition and healthy cooking, and provided free daycare for each. With Texas, Councilman Nirenberg said. Improvements like these allow for continued world-class patient care and bioscience research. Through collaboration with the Medical Center Alliance and the San Antonio Medical Foundation, projects to improve the Medical Center area have been underway since voters approved the Bond Program. This latest project is funded with $6.6 million from the Bond Program. This project incorporated the $20,000 the group will be able to create an outdoor recreational area on or near the campus, host motivational speakers, provide workbooks and materials, and create Family Fun Nights. The Team Up Challenge encourages students to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world, bringing education alive in powerful ways. Students create projects that address needs that will help improve their community in one of five categories: Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness or Uniformed Services. As a premier initiative of Silver & Black Give Back, Spurs and Rampage players have worked alongside the students to help bring their vision to life. Mission Branch Library Wins 2015 AIA / ALA Library Building Award By Marcie Hernandez The San Antonio Public Library Mission Branch has been awarded the 2015 AIA/ALA Library Building Award. To encourage excellence in the architectural design and planning of libraries, the AIA and the American Library Association/Library Administration and Management Association created this award to distinguish accomplishments in library architecture. The Mission Branch Library was designed by local architects Muñoz & Company as part of the 2007 City of San Antonio bond package, and was built to high energy-efficient standards. All efforts were made to insure that the Library was a good steward of the environment, and that it sets Mission Branch Library. (Courtesy photo) an example for future development in the area. The branch is located at the site of the former Mission Drive-in Theater, just north of the historic Mission San Jose and less than one block west of Mission County Park and the historic Mission Reach of the San Antonio River Walk. The library resides in the heart of the south-side neighborhood. Since its opening, the Mission Branch has been a catalyst and model for new development along the newly formed Roosevelt Avenue Corridor district. Public input was gathered to inform the design as well as the library services offered at the branch library. As community gathering places, it is important for libraries to be functional as well as offer inspirational spaces. Library buildings should enhance the community landscape though their design. 20 2-C LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 12 de abril de 2015 En la segunda Noche Latina presentada por la NBA, el guardia italiano Marco Belinelli y el escolta argentino Manu Ginóbili vistieron playeras con el nombre Los Spurs. Ambos fueron dignos representantes en este tradicional evento en el que además destacaron aportando puntos en el marcador de 123 a 93 para derrotar al visitante Nuggets de Denver y celebrar los 50 triunfos de la temporada NBA (Fotos, Franco) Sebastien de la Cruz, apodado El Charro de Oro, en la segunda Noche Latina de la NBA en el partido Spurs vs. Nuggets de Denver, se encargó de anunciar la alineación titular de Los Spurs. El público lo premió con emotiva ovación. Para mí fue un honor haber sido invitado para anunciar la alineación de Los Spurs, expresó Cruz, quien en otras ocasiones con éxito ha interpretado el Himno Nacional en el AT&T Center, casa del pentacampeón. Durante los eventos de la segunda Noche Latina éne-bé-a, en la que Los Spurs se anotaron rotunda victoria ante el visitante equipo Nuggets de Denver (con lo que llegaron a 50 triunfos en la temporada NBA ), la dinámica presentadora Iliana Jiménez, representante de la NBA en la Ciudad de México, volvió a realizar un excelente trabajo en cada promoción en las que animó el ambiente acompañada por fans, El Coyote y el actor Chuck Cureau, presentador oficial. Las dinámicas chicas de la porra Los Spurs Silver Dancers, con su espectacular coreografía, animaron los tiempos pedidos durante la tradicional Noche Latina de la NBA. Un aficionado de Los Spurs tuvo la oportunidad de participar en la promoción H-E-B Beach Ball Mania, en la que ganó la cantidad de $100 y aplausos de los más de 18 mil espectadores. Todo un atractivo fue la presentación en el medio tiempo del partido Spurs vs. Mavericks de Dallas, en el que vivieron sus cinco minutos de fama los integrantes de la famosa agrupación de baile moderno Southern Belles Dance Company. En la segunda Noche Latina de la NBA, la gerencia general de Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E) volvió a presentar con éxito al popular Mariachi Mujer Internacional de Los Spurs. Sus integrantes se llevaron las palmas interpretando el tema Guadalajara. Con todos los honores se presentó la ceremonia del Himno Nacional durante la segunda Noche Latina de la NBA, evento en el que exitosamente participó el coro musical de la Margil Elementary School que pertenece al sistema educativo del SAISD. El coro de la escuela Gregory Luna Middle School Choir cumplió con invitación especial de la gerencia general de SS&E para interpretar el Himno Nacional en el partido Spurs vs. Grizzlies de Memphis. La escolta militar de Judson High School ROTC presentó banderas. La porra mixta del Team Energy de los Spurs, con su espectacular y deportiva coreografía, se ha venido ganando simpatías de espectadores. El equipo Silver & Black de Spurs Wheelchair Basketball (del baloncesto sobre silla de ruedas) jugó breve partido interescuadras en el medio tiempo del clásico dominical del oeste entre Spurs y el visitante Warriors de Golden State. Fans aplaudieron su espectacular estilo de juego. La popularidad del pentacampeón Spurs sigue atrayendo nuevos seguidores en esta temporada en la que se encuentran defendiendo su título.
