Mother Teresa used to say that the trouble with the world is that we've all forgotten that we belong to each other. It is easy to talk big about being God's children and to say that Jesus is our brother, but do we really believe it? Do we live like God's children or the sisters and brothers of Jesus? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Sometimes it takes a special experience to remind us what our kinship is all about. It means being one with the other. Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ, of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles talks often of kinship and gives graphic examples. One church where he served was used at night as a place for homeless men to sleep. That left an odor in the church. One Sunday he asked the congregation what that odor was, and someone finally said it smelled like feet. When he asked why, another person said it was because of the homeless men who slept there. He asked why they let that happen, and the answer was that it was because they had committed to do that. When he asked why, the answer was because it was what Jesus would do. He asked again what the church smelled like and the answer was, "It smells like a commitment," and everyone cheered. Then another person said it smelled like roses, and everyone laughed and cheered, recognizing their kinship with the odor of others. They knew they were one with the others. Like Jesus knew. From five loaves and two fish Jesus fed five thousand men, not counting women and children. No one left Jesus with an empty stomach that night. Jesus knew that they all belonged to each other and he treated them accordingly. Pastor St. Patrick Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. They owe their name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643.The Eudists currently serve in 15 countries most of which are in the developing world. Their primary purpose is evangelization, as well as formation to ministry in the training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Their motto is To Serve Christ and His Church. 3 St. Patrick Church Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Office for Youth Ministry Grades 9-12 Sacrament of Confirmation The process is a two year program. Students who enroll in Confirmation I (year 1) must be at least a Freshman in High School or be14 years old. Returning students for Confirmation II must have completed Year I in order to register in Year II. Classes are held twice a month on Wednesday nights at 6:30 8:00 pm in the parish center. Registration requirements for Confirmation Students must be at least 14 to register in Confirmation I. Students registering in Confirmation II must have completed a year in Confirmation I. A copy of the baptism certificate must be attached to the registration form if registering for Confirmation I or if it has not been turned in the previous year. At least one parent and candidate need to attend an orientation meeting at the beginning of the program. Parents and Candidates must sign the program requirement agreement at the beginning of the program. Registration for Confirmation Program information and registration packets will be available in the Youth Ministry office, Parish Office and on the parish website. Registration Forms may be mailed or personally turned in no later than September 19, 2014 to the parish office. Registration fee: $80. per year. He goes off in a boat to be alone, but the crowd follows him by land. They want to hear Jesus and to be healed by him. Forgetting his own sorrow, Jesus returns to shore to be with the people. When the disciples want to send the crowd home at mealtime, Jesus says, "Give them something to eat." The disciples have only five loaves and two fish. Yet when Jesus blesses the food there is enough for everyone, with plenty left over. Does this miracle story remind you of the Eucharist? Take a moment to thank God, who satisfies our needs in the Eucharist. Soup Kitchen - All are welcome to join us for soup every Tuesday night in the parish hall from 4:30-6:00pm. This is a free event. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN NEWS Thank you for supporting our Capital Campaign! Our Phase One renovation projects for the existing school have begun. Electrical renovations include: new light fixtures, additional outlets and fans that will be completed before the start of school! Padre Juan como nuevo Vicario El Superior Regional de los Padres Eudistas le ha recomendado al Obispo de San Diego, Cirilo Flores al Padre Juan Gabriel Castillo, CJM como Vicario de la parroquia San Patricio, como suplente del P. Ricardo. El Padre Juan fue ordenado sacerdote el 5 de mayo del 2011 aquí en San Patricio por el Cardenal Oscar Rodríguez Madrigal de Honduras. Recemos Por Ellos! Esta rueda de oración fue inspirada por el Padre Jozo es un sacerdote franciscano de Croacia cerca de Medjugorge, Bosnia-Herzegovina, para rezar a nivel de familia, por todos los sacerdotes del mundo, el Padre Jozo es un sacerdote que esta promoviendo a nivel mundial por la paz en el mundo. En este cíclo escolar hemos creado un grupo dentro de la familia catequética, para rezar por nuestros sacerdotes, especialmente porque el 2015 el Papa Francisco lo ha declarado Año de la Vida Consagrada. Por eso deseamos entregar al Padre Ricardo para el 9 de agosto, después de la misa bilingüe de 7 p.m. el conjunto de tarjetas de la Rueda de Corazones representando los 7 días de la semana de toda la gente que estaremos rezando por él, por su nuevo cargo de Provincial Superior de Norte América de los Padres Eudistas. Se invita a la familia catequética y si desean otros miembros de la comunidad, vengan por la oficina para terminar dicho ramillete espiritual, para que Jesús nuestro Padre amoroso proteja al PADRE RICARDO, con Su sagrada sangre y que la Virgen de Guadalupe lo sujete muy cerca de ella, en su nuevo cargo en la Congregación de los Padres Eudistas. Ricardo s Farewell Mass Please join us on Thursday, August 7 at 7:00pm for a bilingual mass in the church followed by a reception in the parish hall. On August 19, the Feast of St. John Eudes, Fr. Ricardo will be installed in Quebec City as the new Provincial Superior of the North American Province of the Eudist Fathers. Fr. Juan to be New Associate! The Regional Superior of the Eudist Fathers has recommended to Bishop Flores that Fr. Juan Gabriel Castillo, CJM be appointed associate pastor at St. Patrick, replacing Fr. Ricardo Chinchilla, CJM. Fr. Juan was ordained on May 5, 2011 here at St. Patrick by Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Madrigal of Honduras. It s difficult to adequately express in words the love, joy, elation, excitement, and sacredness of the reunions that each and every one of you who contributed to Get On The Bus were responsible for creating at the Federal Women's Correctional Facility on July 20. Yet, please know that because of your support, some profound and holy moments were shared between 80 children and their mothers. St. Patrick Parish Community made it possible for 2 of the 4 buses of children and their caregivers in attendance to spend precious hours reconnecting with their moms. As we looked around the room and saw young families playing board games, making crafts, getting their faces painted, playing with blocks, reading stories, or teens and their moms sitting off to the side engrossed in often emotional, one on one conversations, we were struck by the sense that these families are just like our own. Despite terrible choices made by parents, they are still beloved parents. And despite distance and difficulty, they are still very much needed and loved by their children. As our Catholic faith teaches us, the corporal work of mercy of visiting the prisoner is something we are called to do. Thank you for hearing God's call to support this ministry! The Masses last weekend featured special musical performances using our new Allen state-of-the-art organ. We want to thank our organist Brian Avey and Wayne Seppala of Allen Organ Co. who played at all of our masses to show off the capabilities of our new organ. We would also like to thank the many parishioners who have contributed. We are close to fully funding the organ and any additional gifts for our Organ Fund will be greatly appreciated.
