2 by Elizabeth Shu Build Background Read the title to children and talk with them about the rabbit in the cover photo. Ask them what they think they will learn about animals in the snow. Build interest with questions such as: Dónde está sentado el conejo? Cómo creen que se protege del frío en invierno? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features such as the repetition of the phrase: Mira mi that tells the names of different animals. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this is a book about animals that can live in the snow. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Qué animal es este? En el libro dice: Mira mi búho. Digan mi. Con qué letra creen que empieza mi? Busquen la palabra mi y señálenla con el dedo. Page 3: Explain that children can use information in the photos to help them read. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text A bird, rabbit, fox, moose, and a family of bears can live in the snow. It s fun to learn about animals who can live in the snow. There are animal families in nature. Some animals can live outdoors in cold weather. The author uses almost the same language on each page. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables from the book: animales; nieve; mira; búho; conejo; zorro; alce; osos. Have them clap on each syllable: a-ni-ma-les; nie-ve; mi-ra; bú-ho; co-ne-jo; zo-rro; al-ce; o-sos. Recognize High-Frequency Words Materials: index cards and a box. Write a few easy high-frequency words on index cards, such as: el, la, yo, mira, a, un, una, mi, con. Ask children to choose an index card and read the word. Finding Letters Have children recognize letters by name and locate them quickly in words. Use letters from the words in the story, including: mira, búho, conejo, zorro, alce, osos, mamá. 3 Lesson 12:
4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Animals Build on the animal words in. Suggested language: Pensemos en otros animales que podemos ver en la nieve. Piensen en animales que vemos en el parque o en nuestra comunidad, o en otros animales sobre los que hemos leído. Podríamos verlos en la nieve? As children suggest animals, write their words and sentences on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with the words: Mira. (Possible suggestions: los perros, las ardillas, los s, los ciervos, los pingüinos) After children have suggested the animal names, read the list together. Point to each word as you read.
