2 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time - January 19, 2014 I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 49:6b.THE CATHOLIC CHURCH- HERE COMES EVERYBODY This popular way of describing the universality of our Church is a theme of today s readings. The prophet Isaiah tells of God s servant who will be the light of the nations. It will not be enough for this servant only to bring back the survivors of Israel s dispersion and captivity. God s salvation must reach to the ends of the earth. Saint Paul writes to a local church of mainly Gentiles and presumably former sinners of all kinds in Corinth. He greets them and tells them that they are to take their place with saints everywhere in the name of Jesus Christ. The Gospel reading from John tells of Jesus commissioning by the Father in the Holy Spirit to bring salvation to all, to take away the sins of the world. This Chosen One has come to baptize the world in God s Spirit. Everybody. As you hear these words, consider your own task to bring the good news of salvation to everyone you will meet in the coming days, weeks, years. Copyright J. S. CONFIRMATION: February 10, 2014 at 10:00 Page 2 Fall in Love with God From the moment God created you, he has been deeply in love with you. He made you deliberately so he could love you. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you (1 Jeremiah 1:3). What about you? Are you in love with God? You have no secrets from God and he loves you anyway. We all have some small shameful part of ourselves that we are too afraid to show even to our closest family or friends. God sees all of you for who you are and loves you infinitely anyway. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made My very self you know (Psalm 139:14). God thinks loving thoughts of you all the time. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God. How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand (Psalm 139:17). Our bodies are holy because God put his precious life within us. Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16). Prayer is about falling in love with God. I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my supplications. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live (Psalm 116:1-2). God bless you. Fr. Alex NEXT WEEK S (JANUARY 25/26) SECOND COLLECTION WILL BE FOR ST. PATRICK SEMINARY. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The symbols and actions of baptism evolved around the experience of adults dying to old patterns of life and rising from the waters of baptism as new creations. As for newborn babies, at first it was desired to wait until the following Easter, when they could be baptized, anointed with chrism, and given a taste of the Eucharist in association with adults. The Church was always willing to baptize adults in emergency situations outside the Easter timetable, and in time, since infancy itself was a life threatening situation, the baptism of babies became commonplace. As with the emergency adult baptisms, it was required that parents bring the child, as soon as health was recovered, to the bishop for the full menu of sacraments. The very real fear of death for infants thus created a situation in which the three sacraments drifted apart from each other, and away from their original, adult celebration at Easter. Today, at last, we know a great deal about how our practices evolved. 3 CYCLE C BULLETIN 8 Page 3 As a parish community we welcome into our faith through the Sacrament of Baptism Matthew Mendoza, Jericho Toledo Martin Luther King, Jr. Day January 20, 2014 We all know that Martin Luther King, Jr. was a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement. So in honor of Dr. King s 80th Birthday, let s celebrate with some lesser-known fascinating facts. 1. In 1963 he became the first African-American to be named Time Magazine s Man of the Year. 2. At the age of 35, he became the youngest man to have been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. He donated the money to benefit the civil rights movement. 3. He was arrested 30 times and was awarded at least 50 degrees from colleges and universities. The Rectory will be closed this Monday, January 20, 2014 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The administration, faculty and students of Holy Angels School invite everyone to their Open House to celebrate the beginning of Catholic Schools Week, on Sunday, January 26 th from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. All classrooms and labs will be open and will have displays of student work or special projects. Students and parents will be available to give tours and answer any questions you may have. Holy Angels is staffed by five Dominican Sisters and a lay staff of seventeen. A variety of extra curricular activities are offered to students. Extended care is available before and after school hours. Holy Angels School is accredited by both the WASC and WCEA. San Francis de Sales TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Los retablos de metal son famosos en muchas partes de Latinoamérica. Estos pequeños retablos o laminitas contienen imágenes de Cristo, la Santísima Trinidad, María, los ángeles u otro santo/a pintados sobre lámina, madera u otro material para decorar los altares familiares de los hogares hispanos. Aunque los retablos no siempre siguen las normas del arte cristiano, los retablos latinoamericanos son bellos ejemplos de la mezcla de culturas amerindias, europeas y africanas. Pero no todos los retablos son pequeños. En muchas iglesias coloniales de Latinoamérica se encuentran retablos gigantescos hechos de mármol o madera, cubiertos de oro y joyas que recuerdan los grandes retablos europeos, pero con el color y folclor latinoamericano. Originalmente, los retablos europeos eran pequeños y móviles, de tal manera que se podían colocar sobre un altar para la celebración de la Misa. Cuando la Iglesia fue construyendo sus propios templos, los retablos empezaron a formar parte de la decoración de los santuarios y tomaron dimensiones impresionantes.
