It s October in Salem and while much of the city is consumed with the Halloween experience and staying clear of downtown traffic, the students at Bentley Elementary School are wrapping up their second month of a new school experience. This year marks the beginning of a transition for Bentley with two principals leading what are essentially two schools under one roof; grades K-2 led by Diane O Donnell and grades 3-5 led by Justin Vernon. Next year Vernon will lead grades K-5. All of this is part of the district s new turnaround plan for Bentley, which was adopted last spring. Under this plan, the district contracted with Blueprint Schools, an education nonprofit with expertise in turnaround, to help lead the school improvement efforts for Bentley. So far the transition appears to be going very smoothly. Both O Donnell and Vernon expressed appreciation for the collaborative relationship that has developed between them. We meet weekly to keep connected and discuss issues related to sharing families, physical space and some staff members. Our conversations are positive, productive, collaborative and professional, says O Donnell. Vernon commented on their collaborative efforts to make student arrival and dismissal smooth for students, families and staff, and greatly appreciates the knowledge that K-2 staff members have shared with the 3-5 team regarding students in grades 3-5. Parents echoed Vernon and O Donnell citing smooth transitions noticed throughout the school. Despite many parents initial hesitation about Blueprint and their child s transition into the grades 3-5 program, Bentley parents express great satisfaction with the school year so far. Wilson Peña, a Bentley parent who was vocal in his opposition to the Blueprint de rumbo del distrito para Bentley, adoptado la primavera pasada. He and his wife are shocked and surprised about numerous positive aspects of their experience this year including strong school communication to parents and how well Blueprint staff already seem to know his child. But he seems most surprised at the change in his daughter s perception about school. I love how my daughter is so happy and loves school, the teachers, and homework! They teach her that school is for learning and for your future not only a place to have fun. Continued on pg. 6 Un Capítulo Nuevo por Bentley dice O Donnell. 2 2 Fall 2014 / Otoño 2014 SEF Education Now. On September 4th, the Salem Education Foundation delivered over 400 backpacks to elementary school principals for distribution to Salem kindergarteners in need. Too many students arrive at school throughout the year without a backpack and without access to school supplies at home, which makes it challenging for them to complete assignments, explains Witchcraft Heights principal Mark Higgins. The backpack effort was part if SEF s Fund-A- Need Initiative that was first revealed last May 2013 at the Hats Off to Education Auction & Gala. This year the Gala raised a total of $6000 during the Fund-A- Need portion of the live auction. The Fund-A-Need initiative will help to provide students in need with a few tools to help them get started on the right track this school year, explains Higgins. This year the funds were designated to provide backpacks filled with school supplies for every entering Kindergarten student and every new to the district first grader on free or reducedpriced lunch; to support Salem High student-athletes in need by offering partial support for their annual sports fees; and to middle school students in need for music and arts enrichment activities including musical instrument rental. The SEF hopes that Fund-A- Need will continue to be an important aspect of their annual auction so that they can continue to partner with schools and principals directly to tailor resources to the specific needs of Salem students. Dave Angeramo, principal of Salem High School, appreciates this kind of focused giving. We're fortunate to have a lot of interest in our sports program at SHS. The funds raised through Fund-A-Need will be a welcome boost to supporting our student-athletes, said Angeramo. No student-athletes are excluded from participation because of difficulty paying the sports fees. We always work to find solutions to fund the programs and the donation from the SEF is a huge help. 3 Education Now. Educación Ahora Fall 2014 / Otoño Letters / Cartas Dr. stephen russell, superintendent / superintendente Salem Public Schools: The Year Ahead Escuelas Públicas de Salem: el año por delante Kim DrisColl Change offers opportunity for new beginning Un Cambio Ofrece Oportunidad Para Un Nuevo Comienzo Given the news of the completion of my contract this June, I was recently asked, So, are you looking ahead to June? Upon reflection, my response was No, I m honestly working on today! Those of you whom I ve come to know and work with have probably realized by now that the commitment to the Salem Public Schools that I ve demonstrated during the past 4 years is genuine and continues. We still have a lot of work to do. So here s a rundown of some of what s on my mind as the school year unfolds. We have new principals at the Bates, Bentley, Bowditch and Collins schools. Our district administrative team is committed to supporting their professional efforts and building their capacity for long-term success. In addition to our own involvement, an individual mentor has been assigned to regularly work with them onsite. We are also making arrangements to conduct a professional seminar series for all of our principals through an outside, well-respected organization. The MA Department of Elementary & Secondary Education ranked Salem s year III version of our Accelerated Improvement Plan as strong. Our key areas of focus remain: instructional improvement, the use of data to provide our teachers with information on which standards have been learned (and which need more work), student support, and leadership. These goals remain paramount in turning our schools around. As we review and scrutinize the Spring 2014 MCAS results, we are identifying bright spots of success in some schools/grades, areas in need of improvement, and the best strategies needed to bring about further progress. We re in year II of the implementation of the Balanced Literacy Initiative and we re already seeing positive results. This year, we re also introducing significant initiatives, along with coaches and updated curriculum maps, in mathematics. A pilot program, funded by the READ Trust, involving several science coaches is being introduced at the Saltonstall, Horace Mann, and Bates Schools. During the past two years, one thing I ve learned is that there is no one size fits all to school improvement. Our work in supporting student success continues to take many forms as we move forward. Multiple new initiatives are also underway at the Bentley, Bowditch, and Collins Middle School. As many of you know, at Bentley we are in the midst of a transition from a traditional K-5 school to the creation of a Horace Mann Charter School. This effort was recently pushed forward further by the School Committee s support of discontinuing the staggered schedule and having the Bentley K-2 classroom teachers extend the school day to match the gr. 3-5 Blueprint schedule. At the Bowditch School, the results of the summer Working Group s efforts have translated into significant changes made in improving school discipline, making better use of time within the daily schedule (including ELL programming), the adoption of school uniforms, and other positive steps to support an improved school culture. During the next several months we will also begin to consider adopting the Innovation School Model, similar to the model that is successfully in place at the Carlton School, for use at the Bowditch School. And here at the Collins Middle School (where our offices are located), we ve had a front row seat to the changes that extended learning time is having on life at Collins. While we re still working out some of the logistical issues that accompanied the short implementation timeline, students are responding positively to both the academic and enrichment activities being offered. We are confident that our partnership with the National Center for Time & Learning, our continued support of the efforts underway, and our shared commitment to improvement and a regular, predictable pattern of communication, will make the new Collins Middle School Extended Learning Time a success. Then there s the rest of the world outside of Salem. This world contains an increasing number of state and federal mandates many well intended but unfunded, promulgated by the legislature, the MA DESE, regional initiatives, and the list goes on. Many acronyms come out of this world. They include PARCC, WIDA, DDMs, Edwin, RETELL, CPR (not the lifesaving kind), etc. Our challenge is using what time and resources we have available to maintain our focus on what s important in sustaining the improvements that are beginning to take root here in Salem. So to return to my original reflection, I m not worried about June, because I/we are quite busy with the important work of today! Every change offers the opportunity for a new beginning and every new beginning offers the occasion for improvement. In the Fall of 2015, Salem s students will walk into schools being led by a new Superintendent. While we don t know who that individual will be, we should recognize that this presents an opportunity to continue the transformation of our public schools in a meaningful and positive way. This is an occasion to set a course and think deeply and strategically about the direction of our school district and the type of new leader we want to manage that effort. Above all, the new Superintendent must act with urgency to improve our system and obtain results. The School Committee will be responsible for overseeing the process of selecting our next Superintendent and I expect it will be open, competitive, and transparent, engaging with parents and other stakeholders in our community. Candidates will be assessed based on their experience, their merit, and their demonstrated results. The process will be robust and rigorous, never losing sight of this fundamental reality: the Salem public schools need a strong superintendent to continue our improvement plan and make smart, bold decisions and changes where necessary. I am appreciative of the work started by our current Superintendent and value the time, effort, and positive attitude he has demonstrated to our District over the last few years. My hope is that our next Superintendent will be willing to build on those efforts and work collaboratively with partners both in our schools and in our community at large. They will bring a record of proven success in lifting up struggling schools in a way that is respectful of our district s unique culture and challenges, while also demonstrating leadership for change when change is necessary. They will set a culture that inspires our teachers and principals, supports their hard work, prioritizes the many new initiatives and reforms underway with an aim toward managing competing demands, and offers feedback and opportunities to grow, all while setting high standards for accountability. They will be willing to put in the extra effort necessary to build more parental engagement and involvement in our schools and have a passion for education and for challenging work that ascribes to the belief that all children can and must succeed. The past year has seen much hard work by many dedicated individuals both within and outside of our schools, all focused on the single objective of increasing our students achievement. We may have had disagreements about the process or the tools that are available to us, but no one can disagree that our final goal is shared by all. I am hopeful that the changes we are bringing in to place this school year - including more time for teaching and planning, better supports for English language learners, dedicated interventions and tutoring in core subjects, autonomies and flexibilities to adapt to new challenges, and an investment in data to aid our decision making - will show results not too far down the road. My hope for our next Superintendent is a leader who can take those positive changes and build upon them. Working in collaboration with our School Committee, faculty, staff and parents, they will expand them where they are working and adjust them where they are not. They will introduce new ideas for us to discuss and consider. In short, they will guide our schools with the appropriate combination of steadiness and innovation that Salem requires. As a first step in this process the School Committee will work to form a search committee, comprised of Committee members and key stakeholders. In advance of that we will be working to re-assess and build internal consensus on our core principles as a District, so our next school leader will be in synch with those key objectives and come to work ready to hit the ground running. The time is right for a fresh start at the very top. This is Salem s opportunity, as a community, to come together and find consensus on what we want in our next Superintendent and on whom that leader ought to be. And I, for one, am looking forward to that opportunity.

He s following in the footsteps of Mary Manning, who had been at the Collins Middle School since the 1980 s. He has spent the past 10 years in Fall River middle schools, first teaching and then as a redesign coach and vice principal. He was drawn by Salem s status as a small city with a diverse population. The sense of urgency from district leadership, and their focus and support were also key. His experience with turnaround and extended school days will come in handy as Collins works to implement a longer day with a radically revised schedule. While many of the initiatives and traditions from previous years will continue, there will also be some changes. Glenn reports that scholars, as they are now being called, are excited to come to school, engaged in the classroom and loving their new electives at the end of the day. Families are being invited in for monthly coffees and Collins Family Connections meetings to learn more about what s going on at the school and participate more actively. He expects to be visible in the classrooms this year to support teachers and foster respect among the young scholars. There is a new 25 Book campaign kicking off, to promote reading. Overall, he believes that learning is supposed to be fun. As a Cambridge native, Sean Gass is no stranger to eastern Massachusetts. He spent several years as the program director at Community Boating in Boston and then ten years teaching out in California. He came back looking for a small high school in an urban setting with a diverse population of students and residents. He likes the school s founding ideals, and is working to keep them alive as Salem Academy grows by 30%, if the State agrees. For the school s faculty, he envisions a process of continuous improvement and constant inquiry and reflection. He sees social justice education, with students who can think deeply and take intellectual risks, as a high leverage way to change the world. As the school grows, he believes it will need to continue to pay attention to individual student s needs in order to do that. Great teaching, focused on skills and knowledge not just compliance with rules is the key. Following students after they graduate, to see what works in the long run, and retooling to address any problem areas, is the way to continuous improvement. MiChelle herman Director of Teacher and leadership Development / Directora de Desarrollo de Maestros y líderes Diane O DOnnell Bentley School, lower grades / escuela Bentley, grados inferiores Diane O Donnell has been hired as the interim principal for kindergarten through second grade at Bentley for the 2014/15 school year. She finished out the last school year as interim co-principal for the whole school and spent the 2012/13 school year as interim principal at Horace Mann Lab School. She had been at Horace Mann for many years as a kindergarten teacher before taking over as principal. She took a two-year retirement, to which she hopes to return at the end of June. Having spent her entire career in the Salem Public Schools, Diane provides some continuity and stability for the families and teachers who returned to Bentley K-2 this year. She is working with the faculty and staff to build on the gains that were made last year, prioritizing the students academic, social and emotional needs. One of her primary goals is to provide students with a nurturing and safe environment, while instilling a love of learning, the arts, physical activity and healthy living. Michelle Herman is one part of the 4-person team charged with overhauling just about every part of Salem s school experience. Along with Amy Richardson, there is Jason Colombino, STEM coordinator, and Viki Hernandez, humanities coordinator. Michelle started her career teaching in rural Pennsylvania, with students whose parents were mostly Mexican farm workers and employees of DuPont. She eventually became a director of elementary math and science curriculum and went to Louisville, Kentucky with 90 elementary schools. Her work included rolling out the very first Common Core math curriculum. She came to Massachusetts to work with ANet, focusing on Salem, Revere, Chelsea and Lawrence. She is excited to be able to focus on just one district this year, to get to know the teachers better, to work as a team with them, and to tie all the pieces together. She will help principals be instructional leaders, develop newer teachers, and help teachers to be leaders for one another. She believes in a reflective process, with teachers always asking if they re using the best methods, and teaching rather than just preparing students for tests. Professionalism among all teachers and leaders is her goal. The only problems are where to begin, balancing immediate needs with long term vision and wanting to do everything as well as possible.

Education Now. Educación Ahora Fall 2014 / Otoño District Wide / Distrito TOM MilaSCheWSki Bates elementary School principal / Director de la escuela elemental Bates WilliaM ShevOry nathaniel Bowditch School / escuela nathaniel Bowditch Tom Milaschewski comes to Salem over the Kernwood Bridge. His teaching experience is in the Boston Public Schools and his home is in Beverly. Salem Public Schools commitment to turnaround and to the children were the main draws for him. He came on as the interim principal in April and has enjoyed working with the dedicated staff and parent community. Building on the foundation laid by long-term principal Tom LaValley, Burns is looking to strengthen those systems and structures, to encourage collaborative work among the teachers, and ultimately to provide all students with an excellent education. He wants them to not only have skills, but a sense of discovery and a sense of their passion in life. Bates was one of several schools that had informal playground gatherings over the summer. While Burns credits the PTO with setting them up, he also took advantage of them to introduce himself to both new and returning families. Burns da el crédito de organizarlas a la organización de padres y maestros, pero también las aprovechó para introducirse tanto a las familias nuevas como a las que regresan. amy richardson Director of Curriculum, instruction and assessment for the Salem Public Schools / Directora de Currículo, instrucción y evaluación para las escuelas Públicas de Salem William Shevory was hired this summer as the permanent principal of the Bowditch School after serving as the interim principal for half of last year. Before that, he was one of the House Masters at Salem High School for several years. He wanted to stay in the Salem Public Schools because he likes the initiatives the district is taking, and the use of data to drive instruction. He enjoyed working with the students and staff at Bowditch and wanted to finish the work he had started there. Part of that work is to bolster the Spanish language instruction, which the head of the Salem High foreign language department is helping with. Another part is creating a culture of excellence, with students who are well prepared to succeed in high school and who are aiming for college. Whatever direction Bowditch takes, be that a Horace Mann Charter School, an Innovation School or staying fully aligned with the rest of the district, he envisions a school where students, parents, faculty and staff are all proud to be there and focused on excellence. Amy Richardson came to Salem in search of a challenge and eager to work with Kate Carbone again. She started her career teaching at the elementary level in the Hamilton- Wenham schools. She transitioned to being a curriculum coordinator and eventually ended up in the Lynnfield Public Schools. Her main responsibilities are to oversee the development of high quality curriculum maps, to help teachers learn and model best practices in instruction and to develop common assessments across all schools. Curriculum maps in English Language Arts (ELA), math and science for grades K-8, as well as the first stage of high school maps, are largely finished. She is looking forward to working on the maps for Social Studies for K-8. Current versions are very old and handed down by the state. New maps will tie in closely with the Common Core and incorporate current information. For instructional development, each school now has several lab teachers and coaches in ELA. There are three new math coaches who will rotate through all the schools in sixweek blocks. Students can expect to see big changes in the way math is taught, emphasizing understanding over rote memorization of methods, while still being mindful of struggling learners. Assessments throughout the district will continue to include ANet, while developing common assessments using Galileo. This is a bank of thousands of questions from which individual teachers can select to create quizzes suitable for their students. The one thing she could use more of is time, to get people together to work towards the common goal of educating every student to his or her fullest potential. JUSTin vernon Bentley School / escuela Bentley Perhaps the most controversial new principal in Salem is Justin Vernon, leading the upper grades at the Bentley School. Justin was brought on as part of a contract with Blueprint Schools to expedite the turnaround efforts at Bentley. He lives in Salem and led Boston s first Innovation School, the Roger Clap School in Dorchester. He is excited to be working in an urban setting and to be able to contribute to his community. Much has been written about the process that brought Justin to the Bentley School, but he is focused on the future, both of the school and of the students. With the adoption of the teacher s college to represent each classroom, he s planting the seed of college readiness. While he learns the ropes of the Salem schools, the students are learning their college cheers. As the students and staff learn to function as a cohesive school, Justin is trying to work collaboratively on communication across his now-split school. He s planning ahead to next year when the school will be reunified. He s hoping the rest of Salem s schools can learn from the experiments now taking place at Bentley, as the new staff at Bentley benefit from the district s professional development offerings. Five years down the line, he sees Bentley s students thriving, achieving at high levels and, by keeping track of them, offering lessons to teachers as to what worked in the long run.

6 Fall 2014 / Otoño 2014 District Wide / Distrito Education Now. Educación Ahora A New Chapter for Bentley Continued from pg. 1 Mr. Peña suggested that many other Latino parents are having a similar positive experience with the school. Although he was disappointed that there had to be a change in the school, so far they are surprised and pleased with their experience in the new Bentley. Another Bentley parent, Kara LeDuc, expressed a similar positive experience for her child who is enrolled in the grades 3-5 program under Vernon. My son is very happy there and I know I made a good choice keeping him at Bentley my son s teachers and I are all on the same page and all of us have been working as a team to make sure my son is where he should be academically and.ready for middle school. A quick walk through the grades 3-5 part of the school reveals a new school culture consisting of classrooms named after colleges, students dressed in uniforms, classroom cheers and teachers who are already familiar with their students and their families. As of early October, Bentley grades 3-5 teachers/staff had visited 25% of their students in their homes through a home visit initiative designed to build collaboration between school and home. And, children in grades 3-5 have become familiar with the STARS a set of core values that are instilled in them through ongoing classroom practices, morning meeting, and positive behavior reinforcement. STARS serves as more than a fun acronym, it is at the core of the culture of high expectations that is being set. Bentley students in grades 3-5 started school earlier this year than students in other Salem schools, and benefit from a longer school day. Vernon and his staff commented on how proud they are of their students and school culture. Students in Bentley 3-5 take great pride in the work they are doing in their homerooms they have a great work ethic and their attendance has been solid so far this year. While students in grades 3-5 are experiencing a new school culture and content provided by Vernon and Blueprint, Bentley s K-2 students are being provided with continuity during this transitional year. The K-2 grades operate using the same traditions, routines and curriculum that all Bentley students were exposed to last year. And, with only two exceptions, the K-2 teaching staff remains intact providing students with familiar - - faces who maintain strong bonds with students and their families. Principal O Donnell provides the leadership for her team and is clearly serious and purposeful about providing a nurturing and supportive environment for students to grow and thrive academically, socially and emotionally. All students at Bentley are finding something to be happy about right now. Brandon, a second grader in Bentley K-2 says I really like my school because you re always learning thigns. The teachers are very nice and I can go to different subjects like gym, music, etc. I also like that you can make a lot of new friends. From the Bentley 3-5 cohort, Alex in 5th grade like(s) the Bentley Buck incentive program. I like how we have different teachers instead of staying in the same place everyday. I m happy here. The most important takeaway is that this transitional year, which many viewed last spring with apprehension and dismay, is off to a great start on all fronts. Principals, teachers, parents and students feel supported and the school environment is positive. Want proof: walk the halls of Bentley during the day or stop by drop off or pick up and check out all the big smiles. Add quote from Vernon here re: What has been your greatest success to date this year? What do you desire for your students in terms of their everyday school experience? (add quote from K-2 student).

Education Now. Strengthening Supports for Science Education BY kate CArBone The Salem Public Schools is in its third year of implementing strategic improvement initiatives designed to accelerate gains in student achievement. In the school year, the district will take thoughtful steps to strengthen supports for science education, particularly at the K- Gr. 8 level. As we set in motion improvement efforts, the district is ever mindful that the ultimate goal of science education is for students to have frequent opportunities to think, work, talk, and write like scientists and engineers. Here are the enhancements for science education that are either underway or planned for the upcoming school year. A special thanks to the Norman H. Read Trust for the generous donations they have made over the years to support science education in the Salem Public Schools. science Curriculum, materials and Assessments The district s prek-8 science curriculum has been updated to align with recently-released state science standards. Online curriculum maps provide teachers with a roadmap for high quality science instruction. We are conducting an inventory of existing resources and will take steps to enhance science materials, equipment and supplies. Using a generous donation from the Norman H. Read Trust, we have also strengthened classroom collections of science informational texts at the 4th and 5th grade levels. What is PARCC? BY Heidi GuArino Por Heidi GuArino Massachusetts is in the second year of a two-year test drive of the PARCC Assessment, a new test aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Unlike MCAS, the PARCC assessment was designed to provide a reliable indicator of a student s readiness for college. If state officials decide to adopt PARCC fully, it will replace the MCAS ELA and math assessments in grades 3-8 as of the school year. PARCC is a computer-based test with a paper/pencil option for districts. It includes 2 parts in English/language arts and 2 parts in math. The first part focuses on writing and analytical skills, and is primarily handscored by people. The second part, which is computer-scored, targets reading parcc Grades tested / Grados evaluados Grades 3-11 / Grados 3-11 Subjects tested / Materias evaluadas Estimated per-student cost / Costo estimado por estudiante Estimated testing time / Tiempo estimado de prueba Qué es PARCC? This year, teachers will also administer three short, in-class common assessments to gauge how well students are learning what is being taught. science Coaches and professional Development The district is transitioning science integration specialists (SIS) to science coaches. Science coaches work with classroom teachers to plan science instruction, gather instructional materials, and monitor student learning. The district will offer professional development experiences for teachers focused on science content, including programming, through the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium. special projects Because of generous donations from the Norman H. Read Trust, the district is able to offer several special projects that enhance the science curriculum. Students in K-Gr. 8 will attend annual field trips that focus on science topics being explored in class. Trips are scheduled to the N.E. Aquarium, Museum of Science, Harvard Museum of Natural Science, and Smolak Farms to name a few locations. This year we are also launching the Science from Scientists program at Saltonstall and Bates, in which professional scientists visit classrooms to teach science lessons that are aligned with the curriculum. We are excited about these efforts to strengthen science education in our schools and hope they will inspire our young scientists and engineers! and math comprehension. Combined, the 2 parts provide an important assessment of each child s knowledge, skills, and ability to think critically. Other states in the PARCC multi-state consortia include Arkansas, Colorado, District of Columbia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio and Rhode Island. 8 8 Fall 2014 / Otoño 2014 Community Focus / Comunidad Education Now. Educación Ahora Salem s First Community Read BY PATriCiA zaido The Community Read has taken hold across the country. The benefits of such a program are numerous, promoting family togetherness, voluntary literacy, and community bonding. Student literacy is vital for developing vocabulary and analytical skills that can be applied to any academic or career path. Salem s book of choice was The Good Thief by Salem born author, Hannah Tinti. In May at SEF s Education Day, 500 copies of the book (in both English and Spanish) were given out free of charge. This was possible through the generosity of local businesses to assure that children who wanted a book would have one. Salem s first Community Read held five public events from Thursday, August 21st through Sunday, August 24th. On Thursday, the event took place at Harmony Grove Cemetery. For those who had never been to this private cemetery, a tour of the grounds was available. Then Author Hannah Tinti read an appropriate selection from the book. On Friday morning Ms. Tinti discussed the book and the writing process at the Salem Council on Ageing. On Friday evening in the Salem Athenaeum s lovely garden, over 60 people enjoyed a book discussion. Saturday afternoon, at the Salem Public Library, 5th graders through adults spent an engaging hour with the author. Sunday was the finale on Salem Common. Hannah Tinti hosted an open mic so people could read with her. This was a successful first attempt. The hope is that a Community Read will become an annual event in Salem. In a day and age in which music education is slowly disappearing from schools, kids and teens don t always have a place where they can express their love of music. The Salem YMCA is out to change that. Through a program called Music Mondays with the Dejas, the Salem YMCA offers a place where youth can make music, friends, and memories in a positive and creative environment. This program is hosted by Aaron Katz and Callie Lipton, who make up the Dejas, a local band that plays shows in and around Salem, Massachusetts. Alongside them is Andy Gerard, an audio engineer and sound tech who has been involved in making music for most of his life. Katz and Lipton have been involved in other music programs in this area, most notably the Opportunity Orange singing competition and the music program at the Plummer Home for Boys. Working with at-risk youth and kids in need filled my spirit and heart in ways I never knew possible, says Katz, citing the awesome power that music has to reach people. With that track record, when the Salem YMCA began to consider building a music studio, it made sense that the Dejas would be involved. In 2011, Callie and I reached out to the Salem YMCA about working with the kids there, explains Katz. They stayed in contact with each other, and when the studio was built and the YM- CA was ready, they called upon the Dejas to run the program. Through this program, they met Gerard, who took a similar path in finding his way into the program. A multi-instrumentalist and graduate of the School of Audio Engineering in New York, Gerard discovered the program through a Facebook post by the wife of the Salem YMCA s director, Jason Silva. He reached out to them, asking if they wanted any assistance, and they gladly accepted. That s where Gerard was able to bring his expertise to the program. They told me their budget, I put together a quote, he recalls, and just to help keep them very close to their budget, I donated the computer system [in the studio]. He also managed to negotiate a deal with the music equipment company Sweetwater Sound, who gave the YMCA a special deal. With all the equipment purchased, Gerard and the YMCA set it up and suddenly what had simply been a few soundproofed rooms, was now looking like a studio. At last, in the summer of 2014, Music Mondays got underway. It was a busy time, and just a few weeks ago, the Dejas and Gerard put together a three-song EP using the best-quality songs they had recorded. According to Katz, the EP might be posted online in the near future for the world to enjoy. As he proudly puts it, Every day, the word gets out about the amazing success we are having. So what s next for the studio? We hope to expand the music program, Gerard says, and we want to have a few more classes; we ve talked about a few different things. He mentioned they might start offering audio engineering classes, CA. Gerard también sugiere añadir más días as well as genre-specific music classes. Also, a few of the students, along with Katz, have started writing a musical. We hope to, at some point, team up with the Salem YMCA Theatre Program to bring the creation to the stage, he adds. Gerard also suggests adding more days to the program, so that the creativity is not limited to Monday nights. In addition to hosting the Music Mondays program, the studio has begun to attract artists who are looking to record their own songs. Most notable on that list is the Dejas themselves, who are currently making a six-song CD with the help of Gerard. Working with Andy and with the kids on our new Dejas album is a true blessing, says Katz. But this studio serves a higher purpose than just recording music. There s been a lot of talk about music in public schools and how it s getting less and less funding, Gerard says. So to have a program like this where maybe if there s a gap in your local school, you can come to the Y and have some music instruction [is great]. Katz adds, Kids that take part in these programs are not only learning scales and chords. They are learning how to listen, communicate, and work with others. Of all the features that this program has to offer, that is perhaps the most important. As Katz puts it, When we create from that place of unity, there is harmony on every level.

Education Now. Educación Ahora Fall 2014 / Otoño Community Focus / Comunidad opportunity orange: A singing and rapping talent opportunity for kids and community with Head Judge Tana Miller, mother of American Idol finalist Angie Miller BY AAron zev katz In November of 2013 Tony Furtado, the General Manager of Orange Leaf in Salem, along with Callie Lipton and Aaron Z. Katz of the Salem-based band and production company The Dejas, dreamt up the idea of starting a singing and rapping competition for youth ages Aaron and Callie run music writing and recording groups for The Plummer Home, The On Point Program, the YMCA, and the Boys&Girls club of Salem. Tony, a singer-songwriter and drummer, wanted to give young musicians the opportunity to record in a real studio, a dream that finally happened for him in his midtwenties. Orange Leaf seemed the perfect location to showcase the area s youth talent. Tony was able to put things in motion, and once the idea was firm and the name Opportunity Orange created, The Dejas reached out to friend Tana Miller (mother of American Idol season 12 second runner-up Angie Miller) about being the head judge. Tana graciously accepted and brought along international recording artists Bobby Bishop and Ernest Applejax Owens to the judges table. Legendary producer and international touring artist Michael Pritzl from The Violet Burning occupied the "Simon Seat" at the judges table. Opportunity Orange is hosted by Callie Lipton from The Dejas and Boys&Girls club of greater Salem teen program leader and basketball coach Andre Daley. Over forty kids came out to the first audition for Opportunity Orange at Orange Leaf Salem on February 20, Each participant had the option to sing to a backing track with an accompanist or accompany themselves on piano or guitar. Although youth taking part in the competition may sing or rap either original or cover material, it became clear early on in the competition that a lot of the kids were performing original material. In response to this there is discussion about having a separate songwriters category for next year s Opportunity Orange. In June Angie Miller shocked the kids and fans by attending the semifinal show at Orange Leaf Salem. Angie encouraged the kids with her presence and then stunned everyone with a live performance at the end of the night. As a special gift for the semifinal contestants, Tony provided the Orange Leaf stretch limo for a celebratory ride with Angie and Tana to the Salem Willows. The family and community that has grown around Opportunity Orange in its first year is a truly beautiful thing. The Salem YMCA hosted the Opportunity Orange grand finale show in their newly restored Ames Hall on 9/26/14. 10 10 Fall 2014 / Otoño 2014 Elementary / Primeria Education Now. Educación Ahora Two Exciting New Programs at Saltonstall BY kathleen dailey Ballroom Dancing Taking Center Stage at Salts On Wednesday, September 24, the air at the Saltonstall School was charged with excitement and anticipation. Sixty eight fifth and sixth graders waited patiently in the auditorium for the start of a brand new ten week ballroom dancing program to begin. When the two Master Ballroom Dance Instructors arrived, much to their surprise and delight, the room absolutely erupted with cheers and applause. Ballroom dancing had arrived. Everyone was focused, ready to learn and gloriously happy. Miss Tina and Miss Carol, from the Tina LaFlam Dance Studio in Gloucester, lost no time in getting everyone up and moving to a triple step polka mixer where students were required to learn the steps then dance in a circle pattern, changing partners at the end of every rotation. All attendees, faculty included, danced with joy, energy and lots and lots of smiles! The program was brought to Saltonstall through the collaborative effort of Phys. Ed teacher Phil Nackley and Music teacher, Kathleen Dailey. The partnership seemed a natural one. The duo explains, We certainly want our students to come away with an understanding of the dances, a knowledge of basic steps, a clear frame and dance position and a good idea about leading and following. But perhaps more importantly, the students will learn to act as a team. Two people needn t be boyfriend/girlfriend to dance together. Each partner has a position to play; the convention just happens to be one male and one female. We re hoping to address the dynamics of boy/girl relationships, [to encourage them] to become friends with each other and learn that the opposite sex is not such a strange, dangerous thing. Hopefully, they will learn to see each other as people and partners first rather than boyfriend/girlfriend which is helpful at such a challenging age. And, without a doubt, all the skills learned will carry through into adult life. The culminating event in early December will be a Mad Hot Ball where parents, friends and the general public will be invited to come and watch some amazing dancing. Additionally, there will be a voluntary competition part of the Ball where students can partner up and be judged by professional dancers.. very, very exciting. Opera Coming to the Saltonstall School We are truly excited to be chosen to be part of the inaugural year of Boston Lyric Opera s Teacher Coalition for the season. Using the opera education curriculum, Music! Words! Opera! the program will teach students how to write, compose and perform an original work. We will partner with the BLO throughout the school year to accomplish a common goal to provide equitable access to quality arts experiences in the field of opera to students and the community. At Saltonstall, this will be a cross-curriculum program for seventh and eighth grades, working directly with classroom teachers as well as specialists. Mrs. Shor, Ms. Brown and Mrs. Dailey have already been meeting to start looking at the logistics of implementing the program in their content areas. Stay tuned!

Education Now. Me gusta mucho aquí. Summer Program Partnering Salem State and Bentley BY CAmi Condie For the third year in a row, Salem State University partnered with the Bentley Elementary School in Salem to provide intensive literacy instruction with interventions for students entering grades 1-5. This year forty students participated in our four-week program that emphasized reading and writing in science content and used field experiences and informational texts. The ocean across the street from the school was the primary classroom. The Summer Program had three underlying goals, namely, (1) every child will read something well every day, (2) the child s needs is our curriculum, and (3) every interaction between the teacher and the student should lead to more independence from the student. To accomplish these goals, teachers selected a topic related to the ocean (e.g., the science of shipbuilding, identifying the relationships between living and nonliving things in the ocean, understanding the behavior of marine animals), designed and planned experiments, field trips, and videos to learn the content, and assigned extensive reading and writing of informational texts to support students literacy development. Liz Rogers, a marine educator from the Salem Public Schools, assisted teachers in determining handson experiments, coordinated field trips to Cat Cove, and brought in a touch tank of tide pool marine life. The core of the Summer Program was guided reading. Children were grouped by need and taught in groups from 1-4 students. This instruction was targeted toward students phonics, comprehension, fluency, and writing needs. Guided reading instruction took place for at least an hour every day and was a major factor in the tremendous gains students experienced in reading. The proposed learning outcome of the summer program was to help children progress as readers and writers by the end of the program. After one month of the program, reading assessment results indicated that students averaged 3.7 months of growth. Seven children (14%) who were previously reading below grade level progressed to reading on or above grade level as a result of the interventions they received in the summer program. One teacher noted about her ELL student, He giggled with delight when he expressively read a book to me. He was a word-by-word, pointer reader when he began this summer. By the end of the program, he sounded like a beautiful story teller, and he knew it and loved the feeling it gave him as a reader. One student wrote a letter to the director, Can I come to school on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday? I really like it here. On the last day of the program, each child took home four new books. One child hugged her books, kissed each one, and repeated the word Happy several times. These moments are not quantifiable, but the students joy was remarkable!

Education Now. Educación Ahora Fall 2014 / Otoño What do you think? / Qué piensa? To be or not to be SeF asks the question / Ser o no ser, SeF hace la pregunta... Do you like the idea of having school uniforms? They're (uniforms) pretty good easy to find your clothes quicker to get ready I like wearing my own shoes. Me gusta poner mis propios zapatos. Robert, grado 5 de la escuela Bentley Should students wear school uniforms? pro: Imagine waking up everyday and worrying about what you are going to wear because the kids at your school make fun of you for not having all the brand name clothes. Having uniforms will demolish this competition, making it a safe place for everyone to learn. It creates equality, something that schools without uniforms do not always have. Instead of waking up worrying what shirt you can possibly wear without getting bullied, you wake up stress free, knowing that everyone else will be wearing the same thing as you. This creates a welcoming, safe place where kids want to come learn. maggi smart, 8th Grade, saltonstall school Con: If students do wear uniforms, the school will have a good image, but in my opinion, the comfort and creativity of the students is much more important. Some say school uniforms will cost less money, however many school uniforms are very expensive. Students are not all the same. Why should they have to dress the same? Everybody deserves to express him or herself. Besides that, not every student has the same body. What fits one student might not fit another, and everyone is comfortable wearing different things. Students should wear what is comfortable for them. It could be argued that students will wear inappropriate clothing to school. But having no school uniforms teaches kids to make a good impression and dress appropriately, because they have to make these decisions later in life. By emma Currier-Dougherty, 8th grade saltonstall school They are easier for the morning, but I like not having uniforms better because you can express yourself with your shoes and headwear I'm looking for ways to express myself. Samantha, grado 5 de la escuela Bentley No, because when you wear uniforms you have to match with other people and don't get to wear the other clothes you already bought. Our uniforms are navy blue and white because Nathaniel Bowditch was a navigator the blue [represents] water I think that we should have uniforms [they re] easier about half the kids like uniforms and about half don't school is the same no matter if there are uniforms or not. Karah, grado 8 en la escuela Bowditch I kind of don't like them because you can't express yourself, feels like prison when everyone dresses the same, but I kind of do like them because it saves time in the morning. I still can express myself in other ways by wearing a different shirt or shoes. If kids wear uniforms then teachers should too. 14 14 Fall 2014 / Otoño 2014 Elementary / Primeria Education Now. Educación Ahora An Innovative Formula for Success Fórmula innovadora para el éxito Por nancy SAnTAnA BY nancy SAnTAnA What needs to be done to make effective change? That is the question that keeps coming up across the Salem Public School District and the Carlton Innovation School is ready to weigh in on the answer. At the start of the 2012/2013 school year the new Carlton Innovation School opened its doors with greater flexibility and more autonomy in areas such as curriculum, staffing, schedules, budget and professional development. The Carlton Innovation School was created using a continuous progress approach which includes extremely individualized instruction and assessment for each student, and multi-age, ungraded classrooms that group students by similar levels of functioning. Simply put, this model looks nothing like what most envision as a traditional elementary school. Gone are traditional grade levels; students now remain in the same classroom with the same teacher until they meet achievement targets. Students progress to the next level three times per year at trimester intervals. For some students this means advancing mid-year, for some it means remaining for an additional trimesters, but for all students it means moving on only when they are ready, not because the traditional school year has come to an end. According to school Principal Jean Marie Kahn, the heart of the Innovation Plan is that the focus for teachers becomes not what they are required to teach, not what material in the curriculum comes next, but what their students are learning and what they need to teach, or in some cases reteach. What this translates to across the board is ownership and accountability for all. The teachers at Carlton Innovation School focus on what students have learned, not on what they have taught. Just as important, expectations have been raised for children and their families. Students at Carlton have a sense of purpose, ownership and pride. They know why they come to school, and they know through their learning targets what they are trying to achieve. These learning targets, in the form of I can... statements, can be found for every student, in every classroom, at every level of instruction. The Carlton culture boasts of Curiosity, Community, and Effort, and students develop a passion for demonstrating what that means. Inside the classroom teaching is dynamic and focuses on a language-rich environment where children lead discussions and engage in natural opportunities for peer mentorship. Teachers integrate assessments into their lessons and gather formative data in an ongoing manner to keep on top of what students understand, holding both students and teachers accountable for learning targets. Individual Transition meetings are run by the students themselves to explain to their Community Circle (teachers and family) what they have learned and why they feel prepared to move to the next level. Principal Kahn and literacy coach Shawna Erps both agree the changes at the Carlton School required reinvention and a reimagination. They started from a place where students all around them were underachieving, and if MCAS scores are to be used as a measure of progress, students at the Carlton Innovation School achieved double digit gains in recently released Math and ELA scores and are currently meeting their targets. A better measure of effective change and success may, however, be seen in a tour of the school because students and staff alike will eagerly let you in on their formula for success.

Education Now. Witchraft Heights Elementary School Garden BY kelly meier And THe editorial BoArd The school garden at the Witchcraft Heights Elementary School has been a great addition to the community! Some of the items seasonally harvested for the local Farmer's Market include garlic, zucchini, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, green beans, cucumbers, sugar pumpkin that grow on trellises, and American all-blue potato plants. We grow a variety of heirloom seed, all organic plants, and continue to use organic gardening practices to ensure soil health and sustainability of the garden. The students in Garden Club plant in the spring, weed the beds, and start seedlings for future plantings. Every year a duck family returns to raise their young and swim in the pond in our garden space. The children look forward to their return as it symbolizes the beginning of the growing season.

16 Education Now. Educación Ahora Fall 2014 / Otoño 2014 Middle / Intermedia Sustainability at Saltonstall BY michael lister, ASSiTAnT PrinCiPAl, SAlTonSTAll E very year at Saltonstall we host a Sustainability Fair in the month of May and generate a great deal of excitement and momentum surrounding sustainable living. Our fair brings community members, local organizations, and families together at the school to learn about what is happening on the North Shore to support a more sustainable future. At Saltonstall we have made a commitment to finding ways to teach students about sustainability and how it supports our collective future. Each year at the close of our sustainability fair we take a few minutes to reflect as a community. There is always an exciting buzz generated from the events of the fair. The conversations and sharing of ideas that occurs during the fair always makes us hopeful that we will be able to incorporate more permanent sustainable practices at Saltonstall. We are proud that Salem is a Green Community and feel that we are always supported in our efforts to create sustainable education experiences for students. here are some potential projects and ideas to get excited about: We want to improve our campus and create beautiful, edible, garden spaces that will fit in seamlessly with the Palmer Cove Communi- ty Garden behind the school and the beautiful backyard gardens of our neighbors. Work is already underway in the old batting cages at the Palmer Cove baseball field to create a handicapped accessible educational garden. This project received funding from the North Shore medical center and is supported by the YMCA and Matt Buchanan, a teacher at Salem High School. We al- so may have the opportunity to meet with Backyard Growers, an organization from Gloucester that strives to create life-long gardeners inspired by the power of growing and eating one s own food. We will be using their expertise to improve or plant a garden at every school in Salem. Check out their website, We want our campus to be full of beautiful outdoor spaces to observe the cycles, patterns and relationships in nature that occur right under our noses. We have a great deal of place-based science instruction occurring and know that will continue. We want our new playground to incorporate natural elements such as a sensory garden and other natural play-scape structures that foster imaginative discovery and play. We see our Playg- round as an extension of our science lab to be explored by our young scientists. We want our cafeteria to consider the materials it uses and the waste that it produces. Our 7/8 students travel to Nature s Classroom every year and come back armed with a great amount of knowledge about food waste and how to reduce it by making good food choices and being aware of how much food is wasted annually in this country. We would like to address the problem of food waste here in our own cafeteria and join the city in its initiative to compost food waste. Those are just a few of the sustainable movements happening at Saltonstall and in Salem to get excited about as we work together as a community to live more sustainably.

Education Now. Educación Ahora Fall 2014 / Otoño Middle / Intermedia Expanded Learning Time (ELT) at Collins Middle School BY emily ullman Over the last year, Collins Middle School has endeavored to reinvent itself. This has included extending the length of day, changing teaching methods, and welcoming a new school leader. Collins, built in 1907, has been a schoolhouse for thousands of Salem s young people to grow and learn in. This year, the teachers, leadership, students and families have jumped into the experience called Expanded Learning Time (ELT). With ELT, we are reshaping the school day not just academically, but culturally by working to enhance how students think about and participate in their schooling. We aim to create a community that increases students engagement with learning and provides access to enriching, diverse programming that bridges the school and Salem community. Elective programming is an important part of this agenda. Electives are a block of time every day in which students choose classes based on their interests. In our first effort at creating electives, we were able to engage 13 community partners to teach classes daily. The outpouring of interest, innovation and support from the community has been truly inspiring. We are so grateful to be able to offer our students the opportunity to engineer with Goddard Technologies, to build robots with LEAP for Education (formerly Salem Cyberspace), to get scientific outside with Kestrel Educational Adventures, and to perform with the Salem Theater Company. Keith Longlais (Boys and Girls Club) said of his Making Fitness Fun elective that he loves to give students the tools to continue on a healthy path after the class is over. Shannon Dinan, (YM- CA) Computer Coding instructor says, It brings me great joy to offer students an opportunity to explore a field of study so early in life. Additionally, Collins teachers stepped forward to share their personal passions for community gardening, creative writing, yoga, Jazz and many others. Ms. Oquendo, the PE teacher at Collins for 11 years (flag football and games elective instructor) noted that she sees kids getting on the bus happy at the end of the day and that this is an enormous and welcome shift. The good news has been expansive in just two weeks. Students have begun to play brass instruments for the first time and some can see themselves joining the band. Others are practicing Karate moves while waiting for the bus. One student shared that he has never been involved in any sports activities outside of school and now he is thrilled to be running cross-country and participating in weight training. As an 8th grader moving into high school, he has been exposed to activities that will follow him throughout life. With these changes come challenges, however, and the recognition that we will need to learn from our experiences. With a quick turnaround time, September enrollment got off to a bumpy start. An extraordinary demand for some classes made it impossible for all students to get their first choice. We are working to clarify these systems and make processes smoother while continuing to prioritize the needs of every student at CMS. We welcome your feedback at emilyullman@salemk12.org.

18 Fall 2014 / Otoño 2014 Middle / Intermedia Education Now. Changes at Nathaniel Bowditch BY jeannette ColemAn The Nathaniel Bowditch School started the academic year with new and exciting changes for the student body, teachers and parents. This summer, an intensive work group, comprised of school committee members, teachers and parents, put together a school improvement plan to create a new culture of excellence at the NBS. The most important transformation is the establishment of a long awaited permanent Principal. William Shevory is the new principal at the NBS and is working hard together with teachers, parents and students to implement change. With this new stable leadership, the school is well on its way to being on TRRaC (Trustworthy, Responsibility, Respect and Caring). On TRRaC is the new Positive Behavioral Intervention System (PBIS) that the NBS has implemented this year to create a positive learning environment for students and teachers. Students are able to earn positive incentives throughout the day based on these four principles. The main incentive s students earn are called Dolphin Tickets. Dolphin tickets are the talk of the school! Students earn tickets and then turn them in to receive positive rewards. Students are also recognized at school-wide assemblies for exemplifying being on TRRaC. This system now gives student clear expectations of acceptable behavior, allowing for more time to be spent on academics in the classroom. Another positive change for the school is the switch to uniforms. Starting October 1st, uniforms will be required for all students, after a month-long grace period. Students are expected to wear a navy blue polo shirt each day, bottoms of their choice and closed toed shoes. Most students, parents and teachers have welcomed the shift and note the change in student s attitudes in the classroom. They look sharp!, remarked one of the parents. Parental involvement and communication with parents has also increased this year. Many parents have commented on this improved level of communication from the school. They are pleased to receive regular letters and updates from Mr. Shevory updating parents on important news and events occurring at the school. Lastly, the NBS is known for the Spanish Enrichment program in the district, yet it has not had a solid, consistent, school wide curriculum for teachers and students. This year, Mr. Shevory is excited to announce that a brand new Spanish curriculum has been purchased and will be implemented into the classrooms school wide. The NBS community looks forward to a great year, staying on TRRac and moving toward becoming a school of academic excellence.

Education Now. Educación Ahora Fall 2014 / Otoño High School / Secondaria Salem Public Schools and Salem Academy Charter School Collaboration BY kate CArBone And SArAH morrill Por kate CArBone Y SArAH morrill Salem Academy Charter School (SACS) and Salem Public Schools (SPS) are pleased to announce a new partnership that will result in increased district capacity to raise student achievement. SACS is one of only three charter schools state-wide awarded a competitive grant for the expressed purpose of sharing best practices with public schools and districts. Over the next 18 months, this $364,400 grant will support documentation and dissemination of Salem Academy s experience with Standards- Based Instruction and Assessment (SBI) for the benefit of the Salem Public Schools. The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 allowed for the creation of charter schools. Part of the original intent was to give charter schools the opportunity to develop innovative educational practices and then to share those for the benefit of the larger educational community. Charter schools are independently managed public schools that operate under a five-year charter granted by the Massachusetts Board of Education. They have the freedom to organize around a core mission, curriculum theme, or teaching method, and they are allowed to control their own budgets and human resource practices. In return for these freedoms, a charter school must demonstrate strong academic success within five years or their charter will be revoked. Parents choose to send their children to charter schools, and students are accepted by lottery. The majority of SACS students are Salem residents and reflect the same diversity found in the district schools. Since its official opening in 2004, SACS has grown to its maximum capacity of 372 students and has seen significant academic success. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has ranked Salem Academy a Level One school for the past two years, and the Governor named SACS a Commendation School for demonstrating high growth in student performance and closing the achievement gap. Boston Magazine declared SACS the Best Charter School in Boston in Newsweek ranked Salem Academy among the top 500 high schools in the country, and U.S. News and World Report clasificó a SACS la 5ta mejor escuela superior en Massachusetts. Salem Academy s academic program is designed around a standards-based approach. SBI sets high expectations for students, derived from the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks standards/common Core. These expectations drive the curriculum. All planning is guided by a combination of these standards and the school s mission to graduate informed, articulate, and proactive individuals of strong character who are ready to enter and succeed in college. The process includes five interconnected phases: planning from standards, standards-based assessment, analysis of learning outcomes, adjustment to instructional practice, and grading. Teachers work both in teams and independently to define learning outcomes, design assessments, and create curricula. Learning outcomes are measured continuously throughout the year through the analysis of internal and external data sets, and instructional practice is adjusted according to documented student need. Student grades at SACS reflect only student achievement toward learning goals, thus separating skills from effort and/or behavior. Although SACS does not grade students specifically on their effort or behavior, the school puts a tremendous emphasis on these areas of student development. Ongoing assessment and accountability in these areas are essential for overall student success. Content and skill attainment are reflected in cumulative student grades, and behavior and effort are assessed through a system of universal school norms referred to as REACH (Responsible, Empathetic, Assertive, Cooperative, and Honest). Both systems are captured and reported on SACS s data management system and this information is accessible to teachers, caregivers, and students. This transparent system provides teachers timely information to inform practice, and allows students and caregivers access to those areas of skill and behaviors achieved or those that require additional attention and support. The goal of this grant is to document the SBI practices at SACS and transfer this knowledge to SPS leadership through a series of Study Tours and Think Tanks that will aprendizaje, separando de esta forma las destrezas de un lado y el esfuerzo y/o conducta por el otro. La bring national experts to Salem. While the documentation work at SACS will take place primarily during the school year, the efforts of SPS extend into the SY for implementation and assessment. Throughout the process, it is expected that both systems will gain insight from one another on curriculum development, alternative assessments and instructional practices. In her letter of support, Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, Chair of the Salem Public School Committee, states that the SACS SBI methodology has elevated SACS to one of the highest levels of excellence in charter schools and public schools in general in the Commonwealth This proposal is aligned with the SPS s AIP (Accelerated Improvement Plan) and with the MSSI (Middle School Success Initiative) recommendations. As a Level Four district, Salem is seeking to utilize all of the resources and assets at our disposal. Having one of the highest ranking high schools in our community is certainly one of those assets. This initiative would take the best practices of the SACS and replicate them at our other public schools, hopefully moving the needle considerably in our improvement efforts.

20 Fall 2014 / Otoño 2014 High School / Secondaria Education Now. Educación Ahora meryl Schultz This I Believe Ibelieve in the ocean. I believe that it is representative of everything that I know to be true. Its motion represents the movement of feelings, relationships, ideas, and progress. Its motion demands that not one section of the ocean is exactly like any other. This represents the idea that not one person s situation or stance or belief is exactly like any other. But the ocean says that this notion should be celebrated and declared just like waves build and crash triumphantly. The ocean would not be the ocean if it did not move. Life would not be life if the world was stagnant, indifferent, and unchanging. The ocean s colors: the bright and dark shades, the blues, greens, grays, the varied hues of all it contains, represent emotions and feelings. The different shades of fish that swim through its waters represent the different blurbs of feelings you experience throughout your life. One orange clownfish may exhibit a good laugh you shared with your friend over lunch. One dark grey hammerhead shark may be an indicator of the anger and commitment you feel about a certain issue. The light blue waters of a tropical coast represent light-hearted days and easier times. The dark black waters of the bottom of a trench represent your darkest days filled with despair and fear. The fact is, the ocean contains all of these colors, just like our lives contain all of these feelings. They vary; they come and go with the tides, with your surroundings, with time. The important lesson that the ocean teaches me is that this variety is what makes it so majestic and incredible, and that life is exactly the same. Imagine the feeling of the water on your skin. Imagine you are completely submerged, floating gently beneath the surface. A wave comes and lifts you slightly; only to set you back down once again. You cannot see, but this is okay, because you can feel. You can feel the currents and the movement of the ocean around you. It shapes your hair, constantly changing. You cannot feel where your skin ends and the water begins. With this, the ocean preaches that one feels most at peace when they are in connection with their surroundings, both immediate and far away. Floating in the midst of that vast ocean, one can recognize and accept and celebrate that life will not always feel as it does right now. The ocean teaches me this. It comforts and soothes but also energizes and activates. If everyone looked towards the ocean and thought about everything the ocean was and is and will be, the world would be a much better place. Comic Strip by Gina Cordeiro Cómic por Gina Cordeiro
