1 Hawk Happenings September 2016 Horizon Elementary th Ave SE Kent, WA Phone (253) Kent School District has a Safe Arrival Policy which requires the school to make contact with a parent by phone, or note for each day a child is absent. If your child will be tardy or absent please notify the school at or HE.Attendance@kent.k12.wa.us School staff must be notified in writing or per a telephone call if a child is to ride a different bus home or be picked up from school by someone other than a parent or regular pickup designee. Ideally, changes in transportation to and from school should be finalized prior to children leaving home in the morning. A note should be directed to the office explaining the special arrangements. In the event time does not allow for a note, a call should be placed to the school office prior to 3:00 p.m. to ensure enough time for the message to be routed to the teacher. Our buses are often at capacity so please do not assume students can ride a different bus to go home with a friend. There have been some changes in the parking lot. You ll notice some new striping by the corner. When coming to pick up your student, please wait behind the strip, on the right side, until the full corner is clear. This will allow the busses to get by. For the safety of our students, students may only be dropped off and picked up from the parent pick up area. Please do not double park or leave your car unattended.

2 Horizon Elementary s policy for birthday treats in the classroom has changed with the start of the new school year. Due to the increasing number of students with severe food allergies, as well as the responsibility we have to promote healthy lifestyle choices, Horizon will no longer allow any food items to be brought into the class for birthday celebrations. Some alternative ideas to replace cupcakes and donuts are listed below, but not limited to the items listed Late Start Days September 21st March 1st October 12th March 22nd November 30th April 19th January 11th May 10th February 8th June 7th School starts at 11:00 on late start days. Pencils Erasers Stickers Crazy Straws A signature book or card Busses will pick up 1 hour and 45 minutes later on these days. Please read the Student Handbook and return the Acknowledgment Form to your child s teacher. Curriculum Night is scheduled for September 15th. Come and hear about the great things happening here at Horizon. Curriculum night is designed specifically for the parents, but child care will be provided. We will start at 6:00 PM and the event will end at 8:00 PM.
