Several months ago, Bishop Murphy requested each parish to set aside one hour each month as a time to pray for peace in the world. We had our first holy hour for peace in June on the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Bishop Murphy has also requested that the faithful of the diocese pray the rosary once a week for peace in the world.

Your gift does so much good to HOLY HOUR FOR PEACE: We will have serve the many pastoral needs of our diocese and our next Holy Hour for Peace on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 th our own parish., from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM. ADMINISTRATION FAITH DIRECT: The summer can be a very busy time for families, and during vacation it is easy to forget that Our Lady of Fatima needs your donations. Setting up recurring donations with Faith Direct is an easy way to make sure that Our Lady of Fatima Parish still receives your donations while you are away. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time, talent and treasure. Enjoy these summer days! The BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE: Thus far we have collected $347,399 for the restoration of the church. We have spent $149,685 on the windows, roof, exterior walls and the refinishing of the sanctuary furnishings. That leaves us with $241,535 to complete what remains to be done in the church and wing. We hope that the memorials that will be available for the wing will help us generate $50,000 that we can earmark for the church restoration. While a good number of the estimates have been submitted, there are still some that have to be attained before we make any final recommendations. We will meet again in Septembert to continue our conversation. We are also in the process of obtaining estimates to replace the sidewalks along Cottonwood Road side of the church. THE CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL for 2015 is still underway in the diocese. Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the CMA. It s still not too late to make a pledge for Our hope is that as many parishioners participate as possible. Your gift, no matter how large or small, is very important. If you haven t given as yet, please consider doing so in the coming few weeks. Your gift supports our diocese and our parish for many important pastoral care programs to so many people in need. Envelopes for the Catholic Ministries Appeal are available at the main entrance of the church. It s not too late to contribute to the Catholic Ministries Appeal for All gifts to the annual Catholic Ministries Appeal are very Dear Friends, On Monday, September 7 th, we celebrate Labor Day. While the summer season doesn t officially come to an end until September 23 rd, many of us return to our regular schedules this coming week as schools start a new academic year and parishes resume their regular schedules. Labor Day is an important day, it provides us with the opportunity to remember and pray for all those who labor. It provides the opportunity for us to become more familiar with the issues that workers face today in their efforts to care for their families. Many of those who labor so hard continue to work under harsh conditions, many are underpaid, uninsured, denied the opportunity to organize themselves for collective bargaining, or underemployed. A great deal remains to be done so that all workers are protected and paid an adequate and just wage. For many reasons over the last two decades many labor unions have lost a great deal of their bargaining power to help provide their members with the opportunity to provide their families with a living wage that insures the well being of their families. It is good for us to remember those who labor so hard to provide for their loved one. The first reading for Mass this weekend comes from the oracles of Deutero Isaiah written two centuries after Isaiah of Jerusalem. A commentator on this section of Isaiah read today writes: Isaiah 34 was a series of judgments to be meted out in disasters of terrible and cosmic proportions against Edom, while chapter 35 offers a wondrous vision of redemption spelled out in health and well being for humankind and an Eden-like harmony for the earth, Moreover the

6 S e p t e m b e r 6 th, P a g e 4 same God whose judgment wrought havoc on the or cast out demons came not from Beelzebub (as nations would be the architect on the nations of he has been accused) but from God. vindication, healing and salvation for Israel. The people of Israel are told not to fear. The fear that the Israelites are told to avoid was the paralysis that comes from relying on self rather than on God; this is the type of fear that strangles faith and prevents growth. Fear not, urged the ancient prophet. Look instead at God, who comes to save. This week we continue to read from the Letter of James. James asks his readers to find perfection in seeking the will of God. In their attempt to do so, they must include a concern for the needs of others that is translated into an ongoing care for their welfare. At the heart of James letter is the line which declares Humbly welcome the word that has taken root in you with its power to save you. Always act on this word. As believers of the word, Christians are called to have magnanimity of heart, to see and value other people as God sees and values them. The poor are not to be treated as objects of derision. They are to be for us an object of edification, deserving our sincere respect. The fact that we are able to serve them in their need is indeed a great blessing. The gospel this weekend is the story of the deaf man who is brought to Jesus. This man also had a speech impediment because of his deafness. For Mark it is so evident, it is so clear that Jesus is the fulfillment of the vision of Isaiah the prophet. Jesus action of taking the man by himself in private signaled that what followed would be a significant manifestation of Jesus power. The healing of the deaf-mute man was a revelation of Jesus messiahship and the beginning of the long awaited era of salvation. Jesus uses the traditional gestures of healing (putting his hands into the man s ears and touching his tongue with spittle). These were signs of Jesus messianic authority. By looking up to heaven Jesus affirmed his intimacy with God as well as the fact that his power to heal With the command: Ephphatha or Be opened Jesus recalled the prophecy of Ezekiel: On that day your mouth will be opened to speak, and they will learn that I am God. In the healing power of Jesus and in the person of the deaf man, the world received its sign and the proclamation of the good news of universal salvation. Mark tells us that the good news was proclaimed despite the command for silence. In their witness to all that Jesus had done for the deaf man, those who told of his blessings were, in fact, proclaiming the good news of salvation. When Mark proclaims, He has done all things well, he is putting Jesus actions on par with the creative actions of God. May the many blessings of our loving and always present God fill us and our loved ones with peace throughout these weeks! Peace, Fr. Steve MANY THANKS, to the members of our Stewardship Committee who planned and shopped for our annual Dessert Under the Stars in the backyard of the rectory. It was a beautiful evening. A Parish Picnic takes a lot of effort, thanks again to all those who helped in any way! The Parish Office will be closed on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 th, in observance of Labor Day.

FAITH FORMATION READING GROUP: Our next meeting will be on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 th. The book will As you may have heard or have read on our newly designed signs, our parish will soon begin a wonderful new program called ARISE Together in Christ. It will be a parish experience of 6 six weeks designed to spiritually renew us while providing opportunities for us to grow in our faith and build our community. ARISE is designed to walk us through the life of Christ, step by step while discussing and reflecting on various aspects and how it relates and is relevant in our lives today. At the heart of this program is the small groups who gather weekly in a parishioner s home giving us a place for discovery and growth, strengthening our faith and building relationships in our parish. Over the next few weeks you will read more about it in the Focus and in September you will be given the opportunity to sign up to participate. The invitation is extended to all our parish family and we are hoping that as many people as possible will see this as a moment of grace and participate. Please spend some time this week to think and pray about committing to this program and opening yourself to an experience that may enrich your life. we believe we are doing something new, calling us to arise together in Christ to celebrate the fullness of life. LAUDATO SI (Praise be to you Lord):This encyclical by Pope Francis has been the source of many conversations and comments both pro and con. If you would like to take a closer look at the encyclical you are welcome to come to a conversation on it that will be held in a few weeks. Copies of the encyclical are available. If you would

8 S e p t e m b e r 6 th, P a g e 6 be interested in joining a conversation on the encyclical please call the Parish Office at The dates will be on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 st, and again on SEPTEMBER 28 th, at 10:00 AM or 7:30 PM. YOUTH MINISTRY: One of the ongoing challenges for our parish is to provide ministry for our young people (teens and young adults). While we have had two youth ministers over the last two or three years the response has been less than overwhelming for many different reasons. Over the last few years Our Lady of Fatima parish has worked with St. Peter s and St. Aloysius to provide this important ministry to the teens of our parishes. Last year our Youth Minister resigned because of a much better job offer that she could not refuse. The year before the Youth Minister resigned and took a position at a Catholic High School as Campus Minister following the closing of St. Ignatius Retreat House, which was itself a part of the Youth Ministry programs for our three parishes. Continuity has been a challenge in recent years. Trying to discern what Youth Ministry might be like in the twenty first century is a challenge. The schedules of young people are incredibly full so the way Youth Ministry is done in any one parish has to be very creative and flexible using all the technological tools that are available to proclaim the Gospel message to our young people and engaging them in a ministry that is life-challenging and giving them an experience of a faith-filled community. Please keep Youth Ministry in your prayer in the coming weeks that, together with the other two parishes and the parents of young people and the young people themselves, we might be able to create and maintain a Youth Ministry that meets the needs of our three parishes. OUTREACH Parish Social Ministry FOOD PANTRY Thank you to all those who have donated to Our Lady of Fatima Food Pantry. Summer is here...and that means food donations will decrease as people will be going on vacations, and there are no scheduled food drives. Please remember to bring food with you to church (even an extra can or two) or drop a donation (labeled "food pantry") in the basket so we can continue to re-stock the pantry during the next few months. Please remember to check the expiration dates on all your donated items. Toiletries are always welcome! The Catholic University of America Collection The Catholic University of America, located in Washington D.C., is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States. CUA offers students an excellent education in a faith-filled atmosphere that is grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition. Catholics For Freedom of Religion Freedom is a gift and a personal responsibility. It is a challenge held to each generation Pope Francis Mark your Calendar: Sept.10, 7:30 PM, St. Patrick Church, 280 E Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787, in the church. Thomas Renker, General Counsel of Rockville Centre Diocese, will speak on threats we are facing to our religious freedoms. Come and learn more about how our religious freedoms are being undermined and how to preserve them. Some of our own diocesan priests have received education and have specialized in different ecclesiastical courses and are now serving our Diocese. Next week is the National Collection for the Catholic University of America. Every dollar given directly supports aid for students from dioceses across the country, including our diocese. Please be generous.

CaringHands stayed busy making cards for our sick and homebound not to mention many CaringHands Prayer Chain calls for unimaginable requests. Summer doesn t stop the heart ache for some. We pray you are as excited as we are and will become a part of our parish ministries. Our support can only put a spark into our Parish Family. LIGHT THE FIRE AND FAN THE FLAME. Next week we will tell you about a wonderful day CaringHands had on August 15, the Feast of The Assumption of Our Blessed Lady into Heaven, but first we must take you back to a CaringHands Corner we ran last January 25, It is necessary to run this article as seen below, one more time for you to feel the impact of this amazing experience. Please remember to pray for all our sisters and brothers who are sick and homebound. OUR CHRISTMAS MIRACLE January 25, 2015 Last summer Andrew went to the ocean with his friends. He dove into the waves and was seriously hurt. He was rushed to the hospital and his family was called. The doctors told the family that they weren t sure Andrew would ever walk again. What happens to us when we hear such news? This family turned to Jesus. They called and asked for prayers for their son. The minute we got the call we reached out to our CaringHands Prayer Chain. All the members began to pray immediately and have never stopped. And each month since, Andrew has received the handmade cards from the Fatima Parish Community. Recently the CaringHands Card Ministry received a Christmas card from Andrew and his family. On the cover, there is a photo Andrew, his brother and sister. When you open the card you see the picture inside is Andrew in his home standing using a cane! Preparing for Marriage? Our next weekend will be held at the Montfort Spirituality Center in Bay Shore October 2-4.

Paz, Padre Steve
