6 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE COMMISSION FOR THE EDUCATIONAL EXCHANGE BETWEEN CHILE AND UNITED STATES OF AMERICA During the 52 years of existence of the Commission for Educational Exchange Between Chile and the United States of America better known as the Fulbright Commission in Chile admirable work has been accomplished that has been of great importance for the scientific, cultural and artistic development of Chile. During this time, almost 1700 Chileans have received a Fulbright grant. This has enabled them to pursue post-graduate studies in the best U.S. universities in disciplines extending from the Arts and Architecture to the Sciences of Physics and Biology and from the Humanities and the Education to Engineering, Law and Economics. At the same time, the Commission has granted more than 900 scholarships to U.S. professors, scholars, and students to teach, conduct research and study in Chile. This exchange - authentically bi-national has not only facilitated the improvement of specialized knowledge for Chileans and U.S. grantees but has also permitted them to experience directly the culture, traditions and way of life of both countries. In this way, the now numerous Fulbright community has contributed to reinforce the ties of friendship and affection between Chile and the United States. In 2007, the Commission continued advancing in this proliferous path. Utilizing its own resources and funding originating from the agreements with the Program for the Improvement of the Quality and Equity of Higher Education (MECESUP), and the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT). A number without precedence of 58 Chilean graduates obtained the Fulbright grant to pursue Master and Doctorate studies in the U.S. Especially significant is the fact that due to the rigorous selection process, 34% of the grantees were admitted to the 10 best universities in the U.S. and an additional 34% were accepted in the 10 best universities that follow in the ranking. 7 CARTA DEL PRESIDENTE DEL DIRECTORIO DE LA COMISIÓN PARA EL INTERCAMBIO EDUCATIVO ENTRE CHILE Y LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DE AMÉRICA Durante sus 52 años de existencia, la Comisión para el Intercambio Educativo entre Chile y los Estados Unidos de América- más conocida como la Comisión Fulbright Chile-, ha realizado una labor admirable y de gran trascendencia para el desarrollo científico, cultural y artístico de Chile. En ese lapso, casi 1700 chilenos han recibido la beca Fulbright, gracias a lo cual han podido realizar estudios de postgrado en las mejores universidades estadounidenses, en disciplinas que van desde las artes y la arquitectura a las ciencias físicas y biológicas, desde las humanidades y la educación a la ingeniería, derecho y economía. Al mismo tiempo, la Comisión ha becado a más de 900 profesores, académicos y estudiantes norteamericanos para que enseñen, investiguen y estudien en Chile. Este intercambio- auténticamente binacional- ha hecho posible no sólo que chilenos y estadounidenses perfeccionen sus conocimientos en sus áreas de especialización, sino que ha permitido, también, que ellos conozcan en forma directa la cultura, tradiciones y formas de vida de ambos países. En esta forma, la ya numerosa comunidad de Fulbrighters ha contribuido a fortalecer los vínculos de amistad y afecto entre Chile y los Estados Unidos. En 2007, la Comisión continuó avanzando por esta senda fecunda. Utilizando sus propios recursos y los aportados por sus convenios con el Programa de Mejoramiento de la Educación Superior (MECESUP), y con la Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (CONICYT), un número sin precedentes de 58 graduados chilenos obtuvieron la beca Fulbright para realizar estudios de Maestría y Doctorado en Estados Unidos. Especialmente significativo es el hecho que, debido al riguroso proceso de selección utilizado, 34% de ellos fue admitido por las 10 mejores universidades estadounidenses, y 34% adicional fue aceptado en las 10 universidades siguientes. 8 LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Ambassador Andres Bianchi became the new President of the Board of Directors in July With his arrival, three Chilean Fulbright alumni were designated as members of the Board the Government of Chile. In September, Dr. Michael Orlansky, who was also a Fulbright grantee in 1983 at the University of Sarajevo, became the new Cultural Affairs Officer at the United States Embassy. In addition, Ambassador Craig Kelly designated Dr. Miguel Allende to the Board of Directors as a representative of the United States. Dr. Allende possesses U.S. and Chilean citizenship and is currently working as a professor at the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Chile. In 2006, we signed four cooperation agreements with the Government of Chile. The first, with the Ministry of Education, increases the number of English teachers who come to Chile to teach in public high schools. The second, with MECESUP2, is a cooperation agreement between the Commission and the Ministry of Education with the objective of developing the capacity for innovation and research in institutions of higher education in Chile and the U.S., increasing the exchange of doctoral candidates, scholars and researchers. We signed two addendums with CONICYT corresponding to previous agreements in order to broaden the financial support that this institution provides. Modifications were made to the first agreement, about pre-doctoral assistantships, and to the second agreement, which is aimed at Chilean students who wish to obtain a doctoral degree in scientific and technological areas at U.S. universities. I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to thank the U.S. and Chilean Fulbright professors who collaborated on the selection panels and to all the alumni who wrote letters of recommendation. Each year more alumni share their experiences and become mentors, encouraging top students to pursue studies in the United States. As in past years, I would also like to thank the former grantees who participated as volunteers in outreach activities and explaining the Fulbright Program at educational fairs, giving motivational speeches and university presentations, and receiving U.S. students into their homes during the orientation weeks. We look forward to a continued active participation of the alumni to increase the educational exchanges between the scholars of our nations. Our goal is to have grantees in every state of the United States and in every region of Chile. I would also like to mention that this year was special for the staff at the Commission as two key people in our small team, Karina Sapunar and Mariana Guajardo, became mothers for the first time. This resulted in some lack of coordination within the office, but the problem seems unimportant after the arrival of two healthy, beautiful baby girls, Ema and Magdalena. Finally, we welcome to our team Shelley Herrling, U.S. grantee advisor, a most needed position, since we doubled the number of U.S. scholars and started the English Teaching Assistantship program. 9 CARTA DE LA DIRECTORA EJECUTIVA El Embajador Andrés Bianchi se convirtió en el nuevo Presidente de Directorio en julio de 2006, y con su llegada son tres los chilenos, ex becarios Fulbright, designados como miembros del Directorio por el Gobierno de Chile. En septiembre, el Dr. Michael Orlansky, quien también fue becario Fulbright en 1983 en la Universidad de Sarajevo, asumió como nuevo Agregado Cultural de la Embajada de los EE.UU. Además, el Embajador Craig Kelly designó como representante de los EE.UU. al Dr. Miguel Allende, quien tiene doble nacionalidad y actualmente se desempeña como profesor en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad de Chile. En el 2006 firmamos cuatro acuerdos de cooperación con el Gobierno de Chile. El primero, con el Ministerio de Educación, para aumentar el número de profesores de inglés que vienen a enseñar a los liceos de enseñanza media. El segundo, con MECESUP2, es un acuerdo de cooperación entre la Comisión y el Ministerio de Educación que tiene por objeto desarrollar la capacidad de innovar e investigar de las instituciones de educación superior chilenas y estadounidenses, fomentando el intercambio de estudiantes de doctorado, académicos e investigadores. Con CONICYT se firmaron dos addendum a acuerdos previos para ampliar el apoyo financiero que otorga esta institución. Se establecieron modificaciones al primer convenio de pasantías pre-doctorales y al segundo acuerdo para estudiantes chilenos que desean obtener el grado de Doctor en áreas científicas y tecnológicas en universidades estadounidenses. Deseo aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecer a los Fulbrighters, actuales profesores estadounidenses y profesores universitarios chilenos, que colaboraron en los paneles de selección, y a los muchos ex becarios que escribieron cartas de recomendación. Cada año son más los Fulbrighters que difunden y hacen de mentores para incentivar a los mejores alumnos a emprender estudios en Estados Unidos. Al igual que en años anteriores, quiero agradecer a los ex becarios que participaron como voluntarios dando a conocer el programa Fulbright en charlas motivacionales, presentaciones en universidades y recibiendo en sus hogares a los estudiantes estadounidenses durante las semanas de orientación. Esperamos continuar con la activa participación de los ex becarios para aumentar los intercambios educacionales entre los académicos de nuestras naciones. Nuestra meta es lograr tener becarios en cada estado de los Estados Unidos y en cada región de Chile. Deseo mencionar finalmente que este año fue especial para el personal de la Comisión, ya que Karina Sapunar y Mariana Guajardo, dos personas claves de nuestro pequeño equipo de trabajo, fueron madres por primera vez. Esto produjo algunas descoordinaciones en la oficina, pero todas las dificultades no tuvieron importancia al ver a las dos bebitas sanas, Ema y Magdalena. Finalmente, damos la bienvenida a nuestro equipo de trabajo a Shelley Herrling, Consejera de becarios EE.UU., una posición necesitada desde que duplicamos el número de académicos estadounidenses y comenzamos el programa de profesores asistentes de inglés. 12 THE AGREEMENT/ EL TRATADO MISSION STATEMENT/ LA MISIÓN BINATIONALISM/ BINACIONALISMO Photographed by Crystal M. Green, F THE AGREEMENT On March 31st 1955, an agreement between the Government of the United States and the Government of Chile created the Fulbright Commission in Chile. On February 26th 1997, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile José Miguel Insulza signed a second agreement creating the Commission for Educational Exchange between Chile and the United States of America, in which both nations became equal partners on the basis of joint funding, planning and implementation. The Commission for Educational Exchange between Chile and the United States of America was passed as a Law of the Republic of Chile on November 23, MISSION STATEMENT The Commission in Chile was created to foster understanding between both nations and its main purpose is to encourage learning and research through educational exchange. The Commission for Educational Exchange between Chile and the United States of America is an autonomous, non-for-profit and apolitical binational organization that seeks excellence. The Binational Commission selects U.S. and Chilean researchers, professionals and students with leadership potential and a commitment to their communities, providing them the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research. The experience of studying in another culture is fundamental to the creation of a globally educated citizenry who will contribute to world peace and economic, social and cultural development. Each year, academics and professionals are selected with the vision, inspiration and passion to foster the exchange of ideas and learning that enhances humanity. BINATIONALISM The Commission is recognized by both governments as a binational organization created to facilitate the administration of educational exchange programs, which are financed with funds provided by both governments. The Board of Directors is composed of eight members, four of whom are assigned by the Ambassador of the United States of America to Chile, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assigns the other four. In addition, the Ambassador of the United States of America in Chile and the Chilean Minister of Foreign Relations act as Honorary Co-Presidents of the Chilean Board of Directors.The Board of Directors of the Commission for the Educational Exchange between Chile and United States of America alternates between a member of the U.S. diplomatic service, appointed by the Ambassador of the United States of America, and a Chilean member designated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile. The Presidency is held for a term of one year. The mandate of the Board of Directors in Chile is to continue creating collaborative relationships to increase the Commission s funds, allocated by both nations. 10

El 26 de Febrero de 1997, la Secretaria de Estado de los Estados Unidos, Madeleine Albright, y el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile, José Miguel Insulza, firmaron un segundo acuerdo que creó la actual Comisión para el Intercambio Educativo entre Chile y los Estados Unidos de América, en el que ambas naciones comparten el financiamiento, la planificación y la implementación del programa. En Chile, la ley que estableció formalmente la Comisión para el Intercambio Educativo entre Chile y los Estados Unidos de América fue promulgada el 23 de Noviembre de LA MISIÓN La Comisión en Chile fue creada para promover la mutua comprensión entre ambas naciones y el objetivo principal es estimular el estudio y la investigación a través del intercambio educacional. La Comisión para el Intercambio Educativo entre Chile y los Estados Unidos de América es una organización binacional autónoma, sin fines de lucro, apolítica y que busca la excelencia. La Comisión Binacional selecciona a investigadores, profesionales y estudiantes con potencial de liderazgo y con compromiso hacia sus comunidades, tanto estadounidenses como chilenos, proporcionándoles la oportunidad de estudiar, enseñar, y realizar investigaciones. La experiencia de estudiar en otro país y conocer su cultura es fundamental para crear una ciudadanía educada globalmente, que contribuya a la paz mundial y al desarrollo económico, social y cultural. Cada año se seleccionan a académicos y profesionales con visión, inspiración y pasión por promover el intercambio de ideas y el aprendizaje que engrandece a la humanidad. BINACIONALISMO La Comisión es reconocida por ambos gobiernos como un organismo binacional creado para facilitar la administración de programas de intercambio educativo y se financia con fondos entregados por ambos gobiernos. El Directorio de la Comisión está compuesto por ocho miembros, cuatro de los cuales son ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos de América y otros cuatro son ciudadanos chilenos. Además el Embajador de los Estados Unidos de América en Chile y el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile actúan como Co-Presidentes Honorarios de la Comisión. La presidencia del Directorio de la Comisión para el Intercambio Educativo entre Chile y los Estados Unidos de América se alterna entre un miembro del servicio diplomático estadounidense, nombrado por el Embajador de los Estados Unidos de América, y un miembro chileno designado por el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile. La presidencia es por un período de un año. El mandato del Directorio en Chile continua siendo crear relaciones de colaboración para aumentar el efecto multiplicador de la asignación de ambos gobiernos. 11

14 PROGRAM FUNDING/ FINANCIAMIENTO DEL PROGRAMA The Fulbright Program in Chile is directly financed by an annual appropriation from the Congress of the United States, and by a direct allocation from the Government of Chile through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, the Commission almost completely covers expenses for the scholarship programs with the indirect financial support of its associated counterparts: the Chilean Ministry of Education, through the English Opens Doors Program and the Program for the Improvement of the Quality and Equity of Higher Education (MECESUP); the Ministry of Planning through the President of the Republic s Scholarship; and the National Scientific Research and Technology Commission of Chile (CONICYT). In the year 2006, the contribution by the government of the United States of America was U.S. $1,151,245 while the allocation of the Government of Chile, direct and indirect, reached the amount of U.S. $1,275, 950. The universities in the United States provided tuition awards and stipends to Chilean graduate students of 2006, and to grantees of previous years who are continuing their studies, equivalent to U.S. $1,346,057. For the grantees in 2006, this amounts to the total coverage of stipends and tuition costs for 19 students and partial coverage for 11 students, equivalent to U.S. $654,076. Also, this includes financial aid for 7 grantees through work study and assistantships in research (U.S. $44,190). In addition, for those grantees from previous years who continued to study in postgraduate programs, universities in the U.S. awarded partial and total coverage equivalent to U.S. $647,791. The host institutions in Chile contributed the amount of U.S. $289,086 through co-financing, maintaining salaries, complementary scholarships for Chilean grantees and housing for U.S. grantees. En el año 2006, la contribución del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos fue de U.S. $ , mientras que la asignación del Gobierno de Chile directa e indirecta alcanzó la suma de U.S. $ Las universidades en los Estados Unidos otorgaron becas de matrícula y de mensualidades a los estudiantes chilenos de postgrado del año 2006 y los becarios de años anteriores que continúan realizando sus estudios, equivalente a U.S. $ Esta cifra, para los becarios del año 2006, suma la cobertura total en gastos de arancel y matrícula para 19 becarios y la cobertura parcial para 11 becarios, equivalente a U.S. $ Además, incluye la ayuda financiera para 7 becarios a través del trabajo en ayudantías y asistencias en investigación (U.S. $44.190). Por otra parte, para aquellos becarios de promociones anteriores que continúan estudiando en programas de postgrado, las universidades en EE.UU. entregaron cobertura parcial y total equivalente U.S. $ En tanto, las instituciones anfitrionas en Chile aportaron U.S. $ a través de co-financiamiento, mantención de salarios, becas complementarias para los becarios chilenos y alojamiento para los becarios estadounidenses. 13

In July, the Board of Directors of the Commission for the Educational Exchange between Chile and United States of America, together with the Ambassador of the United States in Chile, Mr. Craig Kelly, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Alejandro Foxley, to submit the Commission s Biannual Report and discuss the work achieved during this period. On this occasion, Minister Foxley, in his capacity as Honorary Co-President of the Commission, named the former Ambassador of Chile to the United States, Mr. Andres Bianchi, as a new member to the Board of Directors. 18 CHILE SIGNS NEW AGREEMENTS WITH FULBRIGHT/ CHILE FIRMA NUEVOS ACUERDOS CON FULBRIGHT Photographed by Allison Shaw, F The new agreements established by the Commission allows for the realization of alliances that will permit more Chileans to study, conduct research and establish collaborative networks with universities and educational institutions of excellence in the United States and for U.S. citizens to teach and conduct research in Chile. ENGLISH OPEN DOORS PROGRAM AGREEMENT, MINISTRY OF EDUCATION. In May, the members of the Board of Directors met with the Minister of Education, Martín Zilic, signing a collaboration agreement strengthening the Fulbright English Teacher Exchange Program. This agreement reinforces the teaching of English in Chile by increasing the number of scholarships for the teacher exchange program. AGREEMENT WITH THE PROGRAM FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE QUALITY AND EQUITY OF HIGHER EDUCATION, MECESUP 2. In August, the Minister of Education, Yasna Provoste, and Andrés Bianchi, President of the Board, signed a Cooperation Agreement between the Program for the Improvement of the Quality and Equity of Higher Education (MECESUP2) of the Ministry of Education and the Commission for the Educational Exchange between Chile and the United States of America. The alliance aims to develop the capacity for innovation, research and promotion of human resources at advanced levels in institutions of higher learning in Chile. The Cooperation Agreement establishes a commitment to nominate the best candidates for Fulbright doctorate program. The agreement also invites U.S. professors to Chile to offer seminars, teach and collaborate in on going research in higher education institutions, with financial resources from MECESUP 2 and from the universities. 16

Green, F ADDENDUMS TO THE AGREEMENT WITH THE NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH COMMISSION OF CHILE, CONICYT In November, the National Scientific and Technological Research Commission of Chile (CONICYT) and the Commission for the Educational Exchange between Chile and the United States of America signed two addendums to previously signed agreements. The first one, signed in 1997, implemented the Predoctoral Research Scholarship Program. This program is oriented towards strengthening the education of students who are at the thesis stage in their doctorate programs in Chilean universities, giving them the opportunity to realize laboratory work or research at a U.S. institution of higher education. The first addendum considered opening the applications for the scholarship to all students in accredited doctoral programs in Chilean universities, excluding the original requirements of depending on the CONICYT scholarship. The second addendum established a variation from the agreement signed by the Commission and CONICYT in the year The said agreement initiated the Doctorate Program in Science and Technology meant for Chilean students who wished to obtain their doctorate degree in U.S. universities. The modification to the original agreement relates to CONICYT s financial coverage for those Chilean grantees who did not receive total or partial costs of tuition and/or fees upon admission in an U.S. university. 18 President of CONICYT Vivian Heyl and Andres Bianchi sign two addendums.

CONVENIO COMISIÓN NACIONAL DE INVESTIGACIÓN CIENTÍFICA Y TECNOLÓGICA DE CHILE, CONICYT En noviembre, la Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (CONICYT) y la Comisión para el Intercambio Educativo entre Chile y los Estados Unidos de América firmaron dos addendum a los convenios previamente suscritos. El primero de éstos, firmado en 1997, dio origen al Programa de Becas de Investigación Predoctoral. Este programa está orientado a fortalecer la formación de los estudiantes de doctorado en universidades chilenas que se encuentran en la etapa de tesis de grado, dándoles la oportunidad de realizar una investigación o de colaborar en un laboratorio en una institución de educación superior estadounidense. El primer addendum considera la apertura de la postulación a la beca a todos los estudiantes de programas acreditados de doctorado de universidades chilenas, eliminando el pre-requisito de contar con la beca CONICYT. El segundo addendum introdujo un cambio al convenio firmado por la Comisión y CONICYT en el año Dicho acuerdo dio origen al Programa de Doctorado en Ciencia y Tecnología destinado a estudiantes chilenos que desearan obtener el doctorado en universidades estadounidenses. La modificación al convenio original hace referencia a la cobertura financiera por parte de CONICYT para aquellos becarios que no obtuvieran la liberación de matrícula y aranceles en la universidad en los EE.UU. Ambos addendum contemplan, además, la total cobertura financiera de parte de CONICYT para los gastos de mantención de los becarios chilenos, según los parámetros entregados por el Departamento de Estado de los EE.UU. 19

22 UNITED STATES GRANTEES IN CHILE/ BECARIOS ESTADOUNIDENSES EN CHILE Photographed by Gregory Robinson, U.S. Student SENIOR SPECIALISTS The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program is a scholarship for a short stay between two and six weeks that facilitates the collaboration between U.S. professors and their Chilean colleagues, within academia and professional research. From the onset of the program in 2002 forty one senior specialists have come to Chile. In 2006, the Commission received seven U.S. Senior Specialists. Dr. Carver Mead, academic from the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), recognized as key inventor of the last 50 years, creator of large scale integrated circuits, microchip. He has over 50 technological patents. He arrived in January at the invitation of the College of Physical Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Chile and the MECESUP Program to visit the regions of Antofagasta and Aysen, participating in seminars and meetings relating to technology and innovation. Dr. Mohammed Rawwas, academic from the College of Business Administration of the Department of Marketing at the University of Northern Iowa was invited by the College of Social Sciences, Administration and Economics at the University of Tarapacá, in the city of Arica, to participate in a series of activities and meeting with representatives from the tourist sector in January Mr. Jim May, dancer and choreographer, director of the Anna Sokolow s Players Project, founding member of the Department of Dance and Theatre at SUNY-Purchase and professor at the Julliard Conservatory in New York. He visited Chile to collaborate at the School of Dance at Mayor University. During his stay, he gave workshops on the Lemon technique to dance and theatre students and professionals. Dr. William Louis Ascher, professor at the School of Government and Economy at Claremont McKenna College. Invited by the Department of Industrial Enginering at the University of Chile, he gave a seminar How to Promote Medium and Long Term Thinking and Action in Politics, the Environment, and Natural Resources, oriented toward industrial engineering students at the host university. Dr. Dulasiri Amarasiriwardena, academic at the School of Natural Sciences at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, specialist in environmental chemistry, with strong experience in the application of analytic methods and instrumentation of environmental monitoring, tests and quality control. Dr. Amarasiriwardena visited the College of Chemical Sciences at the University of Concepcion to give a class entitled Analytical Chemistry Applied in Environmental Monitoring and Research. Dr. Janet McDaniel, academic from California State University, San Marcos, specialist in preparing teachers who work with adolescents. She was distinguished with the Academic Prize at California State University, San Marcos. Dr. McDaniel was invited by the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso to develop a program oriented towards Teacher Training. Dr. Karen D. Lupo, academic in the College of Anthropology at Washington State University, expert in zoo-archaeology. She was invited by the College of Social Sciences at the University of Chile and by the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art to participate in the First Workshop on zoo-archaeology in Chile. 20

23 ACADÉMICOS SENIOR El Programa Fulbright para Académicos Senior es una beca de corta estadía entre 2 y 6 semanas que facilita la colaboración de docentes estadounidenses con sus pares chilenos en seminarios, cursos y proyectos de investigación. Desde que se creó el programa en 2002 han venido 41 profesores estadounidenses a Chile. En el 2006, la Comisión recibió a siete académicos senior estadounidenses. Dr. Carver Mead. Académico del Instituto de Tecnología de California (CALTECH), reconocido como el inventor clave de los últimos 50 años, creador de los circuitos integrados a gran escala microchip, poseedor de más de 50 patentes tecnológicas. Llegó a Chile en enero invitado por la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas de la Universidad de Chile y el Programa MECESUP, para visitar Antofagasta y Aysén, participando de seminarios y encuentros relacionados con la tecnología y la innovación. Rini, Fulbright grantee 2005, held an exhibition at the University Andres Bello called Art for Science, where he showed his work completed at the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Professor Rini is an expert in Medical and Biological illustrations. DAVID RINI REALIZA EXPOSICIÓN EN UNIVERSIDAD ANDRÉS BELLO En julio, el profesor David Rini, becario Fulbright 2005, realizó una exposición en la Universidad Andrés Bello llamada Arte para la Ciencia. En el evento, el profesor Rini mostró su trabajo realizado como académico de la Escuela de Medicina de John Hopkins University. David A. Rini es experto en Ilustración Médica y Biológica y llegó a Chile en enero para colaborar en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad Andrés Bello, con motivo de la puesta en marcha del Centro de Ilustración Médica de la universidad. ROBERTO LOPEZ-ANIDO HELD A SEMINAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHILE The U.S. professor Roberto López-Anido, Fulbright grantee 2005, academic from the University of Maine, held the seminar Wood-Plastic Composites for Construction: Perspectives and Opportunities at the Research Center, Development in Innovation of Structures and Materials, IDIEM, dependent institution of the College of Physical Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Chile. The event had as its objective to give the audience a basic understanding of wood-plastic including materials, fabrication processes and physical properties and mechanics, present a global vision on current development of wood-plastic for construction and teach the audience to interpret the process of wood-plastic product specification for use in industry and construction. ROBERTO LÓPEZ-ANIDO REALIZÓ SEMINARIO EN UNIVERSIDAD DE CHILE El profesor Estadounidense Roberto López-Anido, becario Fulbright 2005, académico de la Universidad de Maine, realizó en junio el Seminario Madera Plástica (Wood-plastic Composites) para la Construcción: Perspectivas y Oportunidades en el Centro de Investigación, Desarrollo en Innovación de Estructuras y Materiales, IDIEM, institución dependiente de la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas de la Universidad de Chile. El evento tuvo por objetivo dotar a los asistentes de conocimientos básicos de madera plástica incluyendo materiales, procesos de fabricación y propiedades físicas y mecánicas, presentar una visión global sobre el desarrollo actual de madera plástica para la construcción, efectuar un análisis crítico de perspectivas y oportunidades y, capacitar a los asistentes para que puedan interpretar el proceso de especificación de productos de madera plástica para uso en la industria de la construcción. 24
