Our school progress reports are now available on our website for your viewing. The link is statistics.php. Our ultimate goal for all of our students is for them to be productive members of society, graduate with a high school diploma and attend college. In order for us to achieve this goal, we need your support in assisting your child with making short term and long term goals. Students have to feel successful in order to achieve and making achievable short term goals are proven to be the way to get our students to achieve their goals. Please make time to talk to your child about their successes and challenges. Together formulate a plan and monitor their progress. Please contact the school as well for assistance if need be. We at WCHS would like to wish you and your families a Happy and Healthy New Year! May this New Year take our children one step forward toward success and lead them to our ultimate goal. Sincerely, Kathleen Gaffney Principal Dear Parents and Guardians, From the Assistant Principal of Instruction I hope that the holidays brings some much needed joy and rest to you and our students. While it is important to celebrate life and family during this time of year, it is also important to focus on academics as it is a very critical academic time of year for students. Please speak to your child about the items below. Completing and Submitting All Assignments- Friday January 16th will be the last day for students to submit late work for Quarter 2. Attending Regents Review- Students taking Regents exams in January are highly encouraged to attend Regents Review sessions. Sessions are available until January 23rd. Studying for Final Exams- Finals begin on January 15th. Students should be reviewing their notes, organizing their notebooks, and reading over the holiday break. Passing Semester 1- Semester ending grades are calculated by averaging Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 grades. Students must have at least a 70 average at the end of the semester in order to earn credits for the course. If your child did not pass the first Quarter, he/she must earn at least an 85 in Quarter 2, in order to pass the semester and earn credit. Please encourage your child to speak to their teachers about their grades and what they can do to improve. Thank you for your partnership as we work collaboratively to support all students!

2 Message from Student Support Services & Student Life I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and a Happy New Year! Believe it or not we are just 6 months away from the end of the academic school year at WCHS. The 6 remaining months will go by quickly and we as a school community still have a great work ahead to do with our students in shaping them to become caring, honest, upright, influential, productive and positively contributing citizens of our society and the world. The next remaining months are not a countdown until summer vacation, but rather a countdown to meeting our continued goal of 100% uniform compliance, students improving their on-time and overall attendance to school, passing all classes, getting college acceptances, and passing their Regents examinations. The Board, school leadership and staff at Williamsburg Charter High School takes this responsibility very seriously and in doing so will NOT lower the expectations we have for students, parents and ourselves. One of the great things about charter schools is that firstly they set very high expectations and secondly, they are a school of choice. The fact that your child attends WCHS means that you the parent or guardian have chosen to send your child to a school that has very high expectations. Therefore we expect that because you have chosen to send your child to WCHS, that both you and your child will continue to comply with and support the policies of the school. When we set the bar high, students will not only rise to the occasion to meet the standards, but will often time exceed the standards, because no one rises to low expectations. In this New Year, we will continue to expect that all students come to school on time and come prepared in full school uniform. Our end goal is in the words of Martin Luther King Jr. Intelligence plus character--that is the true goal of education. Sincerely, Mrs. Roberta Cummings-Smith Assistant Principal of Student Support Services Hello WCHS families we hope that you had a wonderful and restful holiday and are ready and prepared for Semester 2. Please understand that we have very high expectations for all of our students, all in an effort to prepare your child for life outside of Williamsburg Charter High School. Whether life outside WCHS happens in June 2015 or June 2018, we hope to show students that it is important to be accountable for all of their actions, to their school community and to themselves. During Semester 2 and beyond, we will hold your child completely responsible for their performance and we are asking for your help! We need to have 100% uniform compliance and more Merits for good behavior rather than referrals for bad behavior. This year we have taken a more restorative approach to working with your child. We are aiming to use incidents and issues as a learning lesson; we are having more conversations with your child on how their actions not only affect them and their future, but how their actions affect their overall community, whether that community is home, your neighborhood or school. It is important for us to be partners! Please understand that we are here to work with you to support your child, academically and behaviorally. As your child grows older, realize that it is so easy for them to get trapped in a world where perceptions matter more than reality. They may see their peers doing things and believe they should be doing the same. It is important for us (parents and the school) to teach them not to get caught up in these perceptions and to base their decisions on what you know is right. In turn, they will do great things! Trust that we, the Student Life Department, have these conversations with every child that walks through our office. Sincerely, Ms. Martin (Director of Student Life 2015 and 2018) Mr. Sanford (Director of Student Life 2016 and 2017) Smartin@thewcs.org Asanford@thewcs.org

Atentamente, Sra. Martin (Directora de Vida Estudiantil 2015 y 2018) Sr. Sanford (Director de Vida Estudiantil 2016 y 2017) Smartin@thewcs.org Asanford@thewcs.org
