Direct Object Pronouns In this lesson we're going to dissect them so that you really understand how to use them in Spanish. I think that you'll enjoy this lesson. Please make sure that you can focus during this lesson because you'll need to follow along closely. Gracias. Let's start digging...

26 A pronoun is a small word that replaces a noun when the context is established. A direct object is a word that receives the direct action of a verb. A direct object pronoun is a small word that replaces a noun and also receives the direct action of a verb. A direct object pronoun will answer the questions "what?" or "who?" Now, that wasn't so bad. Let me show you what I mean in a few "ejemplos." I bought it. He saw me. "It" is a small word. It" replaces whatever noun we're talking about. "It" receives the direct action of "bought." "It" answers the question "what?" What is "it"? Sí, señor a direct object pronoun! "Me" is a small word. "Me" replaces whoever "me" is. "Me" receives the direct action of "saw." "Me" answers the question "who?" María loved them. What is "me?" Another direct object pronoun! "Them" is a small word. "Them" replaced whoever "them" is. "Them" receives the direct action of "loved." "Them" answers the question "who?". What is "them?" Of course, a direct object pronoun!

27 Here are the "direct object pronouns" in English with their counterparts in Spanish. By the way, from here on out we'll call the Direct Object Pronouns "DOP's" for short. Is that fitting or what? Here are the DOP's English me you him her it us you or ya ll them Spanish me te lo la lo / la nos los / las los / las You've already learned "me," "te" and "nos" when you learned the verb "gustar." They look the same but they have different meanings. The reason that "it" is either "lo" or "la" is because which one you use depends on whether the noun that the DOP is replacing is masculine or feminine. The same goes for the "you (plural)" and "them" with "los" and "las." Basically, this is just a matter of learning the equivalents from English to Spanish, with one exception: the DOP in Spanish generally goes before the action word. In English it goes after the action word. Vamos a ver (see) unos ejemplos. I'll start with an English sentence and work you through the entire progression. This will be very easy to follow, I promise. Carlos sells cars. What does Carlos sell? "Cars." "Cars" is the Direct Object.

28 Now, if I want to use a pronoun instead of the noun I would say "Carlos sells them." I would do this when the context is already established, as with all pronouns replacing nouns. Ok, here's the sentence in Spanish Carlos vende carros. Qué vende Carlos? "Carros" "Carros" es el Objeto Directo (Direct Object). To replace "carros" with a DOP we need to find the one that goes with "them" for a masculine noun since "carros" is plural. The winner is "los." The sentence using a DOP in Spanish should read Carlos los vende. Remember that the DOP goes in front of the verb in Spanish. This is easy to remember because "dopes" walk in front of a moving car. Sandra vende libros. Qué vende Sandra? "Libros." "Libros" is the Direct Object. So, if we want to replace "libros" with a DOP we need to find the one that goes with "them" for a masculine noun. And the winner is "los." The sentence with a DOP would read: Sandra los vende.

29 Let's do another one with a full progression from English to Spanish. Mr. Borges was buying tomato sauce. What was Mr. Borges buying? "Tomato Sauce." "Tomato Sauce" is the Direct Object. Now, if we want to use a DOP instead of the Direct Object we would say "Mr. Borges was buying it." Again, we would only do this when the context is already established, as with all pronouns that replace nouns. Here's the same sentence in Spanish. El Señor Borges estaba comprando salsa de tomate. Qué estaba comprando el señor Borges? "Salsa de tomate." "Salsa de tomate" is the Direct Object. So, if I want to replace "la salsa de tomate" with a DOP I need to find the one that goes with "it" for a feminine noun. And that could be the one with la." The sentence with a DOP would read: El señor Borges la estaba comprando. Again, the DOP goes before the verb in Spanish. Here are a few more things that are important about DOP's... You can add the DOP to the end of any full verb, or of any verb that ends in "ando" or "iendo." For example Yo lo voy a comprar. Can also be... Yo voy a comprarlo. Ella lo está cocinando. Can also be... Ella está cocinándolo. This is very common and both ways are "correctas."

30 If a DOP is replacing a word that is a concept and it isn't clear if it is feminine or masculine then you need to use "lo." "The boss decided it." ("It" here is a concept. Who knows what "it" is? The sentence would read "El jefe lo decidió.") Amigo, this is really easy if you follow the rules. Remember that a Direct Object changes into a DOP only when the context is established. You should make a Retention Card for these DOP's and put that card in with your vocabulary words for this lesson. Indirect Object Pronouns (IDOP's) Now, we're ready to look at Indirect Object Pronouns, otherwise known as IDOP's. What is an IDOP? Besides telling you that it's an Indirect Object Pronoun, allow me to explain to you what it does. First of all, you can't have an IDOP without a DOP. If you're into grammar I said, "you can't have an indirect object pronoun without first having a direct object pronoun." Now, that makes sense since you should always fulfill your direct responsibilities before you start on your indirect responsibilities. Second, an IDOP is usually a person. Again, an IDOP is usually a person and answers the question "who?" Now, if you have a direct object and an indirect object together in a sentence, which one will be the person? Sí amigo, EL IDOP! Which one will answer the question "what?" Correcto, EL DOP. That doesn't mean that a DOP can't be a person, it simply means that if you have an IDOP it usually is a person. The Direct Object will usually answer the question "what?" and the Indirect Object will usually answer the question "who?" when they are both together in a sentence.

31 Let me give you a couple of examples. I'm going to leave both the Direct Object and the Indirect Object as nouns rather than pronouns, so that you can see them both clearly. I want you to distinguish between a Direct Object and an Indirect Object. They sold the house to María. What did they sell? The house (Direct Object) To whom did they sell the house? María (Indirect Object) The supervisor is going to buy the computer for Andrea. What is the supervisor going to buy? The computer (Direct Object) For whom is he going to buy the computer? Andrea (Indirect Object) Ricardo is going to give the jacket to Gabriel. What is Ricardo going to give? The jacket (Direct Object) To whom is he going to give the jacket? Gabriel (Indirect Object) You will notice that in both cases the Indirect Object is a person. So again, the IDOP answers "who?" and the DOP answers "what?"

32 Now, I want to make sure that we don't get lost in the forest here, so the first thing that I'm going to do is to show you the IDOP's alongside of the DOP's in Spanish. English Spanish DOP's Spanish IDOP's me me me you te te him lo le her la le it lo/la le us nos nos you or y'all los/las les them los/las les You will notice that the IDOP's are exactly the same as the DOP's, except with "él," "ella" and "usted" the IDOP is "le," and with "ustedes," "ellos" and "ellas" it is "les." Let s do a few examples. In these examples we're going to leave the Direct Object (answers "what?") as a noun and we'll go ahead and change the Indirect Object's to Indirect Object Pronouns (answers "who?"). They sold the house to Rafael. "Rafael" answers "who?" This tips us off that Rafael is the Indirect Object. We're dealing with one male person so it is for "él." The IDOP for "él" is "le." You put the IDOP "le" before the verb.

33 The sentence in Spanish would look like this... Ellos le vendieron la casa. That's like saying, "They sold him the house." Sometimes we have what's called a "redundant construction." That means that you could also say Ellos le vendieron la casa a Rafael. In this case "Rafael" and "le" are one and the same person. The redundancy is used to make sure that you know who "le" really is when the context hasn't been established. I read the book to my mother. "My mother" answers "who?" This tells me that "my mother" is the Indirect Object. "My mother" is one person and a female, thereby qualifying for "ella." The IDOP for "ella" is "le." The sentence in Spanish would be: Yo le leí el libro. That says, "I read her the book." If you used redundancy it would be They sold the car to us. Yo le leí el libro a mi madre. Ellos nos vendieron el carro a nosotros. In your writing exercises we'll either use a DOP alone or an IDOP with the Direct Object left as the noun. In the next lesson, I'll be able to easily teach you how to mix the two together when you use pronouns for both the Direct Object and the Indirect Object.

34 Again, make a Retention Card for the IDOP's and keep both cards that you made in this lesson handy while you're doing your "ejercicios de escribir." At the very least go over the comparison chart several times before doing your writing exercises. Amigo, necesitas revisar esta lección tres veces! Adelante! Sí, revisé esta lección tres veces. Paso Cuatro - Writing and Revision Necesitas hacer los ejercicios de escribir ahora. Escribe cinco ejercicios y revisa esos cinco. 1. Those managers decided it last month. 2.
