Different sports require different equipment for players (los jugadores), and different places for playing. Study the chart below. Learn some of these words in the paragraph below. There are two ways to enjoy sports (los deportes). One is to be a player (un jugador); the other is to be a spectator, or fan. Fans, or aficionados, as they are called in both Spanish and English, understand well the rules of the game (comprenden bien las reglas del partido). Some sports can be more dangerous (peligrosos) than others. All athletes (atletas), not just champions (los campeones), play to to win (ganar). Do you have favorite sport (un deporte favorito)? Do you play on team (un equipo)? Do you like to to lose (perder)? 1

Me gustan los bates. (I like the bats.) Te gustan los bates. (You like the bats.) Le gustan los bates. (He likes the bats.) Nos gusta el béisbol. Os gusta el béisbol. Les gusta el béisbol. (We like baseball.) (You like baseball.) (They like baseball.) Nos gustan los bates. (We like the bats.) Os gustan los bates. (You like the bats.) Les gustan los bates. (They like the bats.) EXPLANATION: No matter who likes baseball, the verb is always singular (gusta), and no matter who likes the bats, the verb is always plural (gustan). In other words, gustar agrees with what is liked, not with who does the liking. Me gusta el béisbol. Te gusta el béisbol. Le gusta el béisbol. You use gustar to say that you or others like something. Práctica Would you use gusta or gustan in a sentence to say that... you like apples? everyone likes ice cream? they like football? my uncle likes sports? she likes the car? my aunt likes the theater? Juan likes bicyles? we like movies? my parents like tennis? I like everything? Answer the questions in complete sentences. Te gustan los deportes? Te gusta el básquetbol? Te gusta el voleibol?
