7 El pretérito y el imperfecto 1. Remember that you use the preterite to express actions or events that began and ended at a specific time in the past. Carlos fue a la ciudad ayer. En la ciudad vio una exposición de arte. 2. You use the imperfect to talk about a continuous, habitual, or frequently repeated action in the past. Carlos iba a la ciudad con mucha frecuencia. Casi cada vez que estaba en la ciudad iba al museo donde veía una exposición de arte. El joven admiraba un cuadro abstracto en el museo de la Fundación Joan Miró en Barcelona, España. 3. Often a sentence will have two or more verbs in the past. Quite often one verb indicates what was going on when something happened or took place. What was going on the background is expressed by the imperfect. What happened or took place is in the preterite. Un carro iba muy despacio y José lo rebasó.
