3 Grammar Summary REVIEW: Conjugating Regular Verbs in Present Tense The -AR verbs for this chapter in their infinitive forms are given in the vocab list. REMEMBER: The basic form of a verb is called "the infinitive." An infinitive verb then is an unchanged verb. 4 ASKING QUESTIONS: INTERROGATIVE WORDS 1. To ask simple yes/no questions you can use rising intonation to imply a question ( Isabel va a la escuela?) or put the verb first ( Va Isabel a la escuela?) To ask a question that starts with a question word, like "who, what, when, where, why?" you start with the question word, followed by the verb: Adónde va Paco? Cómo está Paco? Cuál es Paco? Cuándo va Paco a escuela? Por qué está Paco en casa? Qué estudia Paco? Quién es Paco? Cuántos Pacos hay? Where is Paco going? How is Paco? Which (one) is Paco? When is Paco going to school? Why is Paco at home? What is Paco studying? Who is Paco? How many Pacos are there? NOTA: Sometimes qué? and cuál? can be followed by words other than verbs. Qué? can be followed by a noun, but Cuál? or Cuáles? cannot: Qué libro mira Paco? Or Cuáles de los libros mira Paco? Notice that questions in Spanish are always preceded by an inverted question mark. When typing these on a Windows computer, you can find it under the Insert / Symbols Menu. Review: Interrogatives -Asking questions be sure to know how to use the following. 5 THE VERB IR The verb ir means "to go." conjugated. It is an irregular verb, meaning that the verb root changes as it is As a question, vamos can mean "Shall we go?", but stated as a suggestion it means "Let's go!" ir (to go) I go = voy We go = vamos You (fam.) go = vas You (fam. pl.) go = vais He,she,it, You (formal) go = va They, you (pl) go = van SAYING WHERE YOU ARE GOING : IR + a + place ** To ask (to) where someone is going, we say " Adónde vas?" -- Notice how asking Adónde... is similar to asking to where...? Yo voy a la casa / Ellos van al teatro / Nosotros vamos a la biblioteca SAYING WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO: IR + a + infinitive ** In Spanish, when you want to talk about what you are going to do in the future, you may also use the verb ir + a + infinitive. Examples: I am going to study = Voy a estudiar. She is going to listen = Va a escuchar. You are going to read = Vas a leer and so on.. There is another way to talk about the future that you will learn later. This is called the present continuous which would equal to the ing ending in English. But that is another subject! 6 DESCRIBING LOCATION WITH THE VERB ESTAR To say where people or things are located, use the verb estar. ESTAR is a regular verb with an irregular YO- form. Here are its forms in the Present Indicative Tense: estar - to be (located) I am = Yo estoy We are = nosotros (as) estamos You (fam.) are = Tú estás You (pl. fam.) are = vosotros (as) estáis He, she, it is = el, ella está They = ellos (as) están you (formal) are = usted está You (pl. formal) are = ustedes están Notice the accent mark on several of the forms of estar. It is important that you write and pronounce it correctly, because without the accent mark, esta or estas means "this" or "these." To ask where someone or something is located you say Dónde + ESTAR (conjugated correctly)? Ex - Dónde está la chica? -- ella está en la cafetería Dónde está el libro? -- el libro está en mi mochila Dónde están los estudiantes? -- ellos están en el salón de la clase de Español PRACTICE IT: 1.
