July 2015 ST. JOHN S GOOD NEWS St. John s Episcopal Church / Iglesia Episcopal de San Juan! Parkfield Drive 512/ !!! Austin, TX We are now in the season after Pentecost. It is a long season of the church year and will last until the first Sunday of Advent, November 29. I often think of this season as the season of parables. We will hear many parables before Advent. As Mark notes, With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it (Mark 4:33). More than anything, Jesus used parables to describe the Reign of God or the Kingdom of God. In wonderful and strange parables such as the Parable of the Sower (Mark 4:1-9), or the Mustard Seed (Mark 4:30-32), or the Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:12-14, Luke 15:4-7) or the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) Jesus preached how God intends the world to be. Parables are surprising. Parables say strange things like the reign of God is like a weed (Mark 4:30-32; mustard plants were weeds in Jesus time). They make us look at the world in new ways. They often show us that the world is not God s intended world of generosity, peace, and P 1 Priest s Post/Publicar del Sacerdote Fr. They challenge us to make the world more like the Reign of God. As you hear parables this season, ask how they might be challenging you or us to remake the world. God placed St. John s here more than 50 years ago so that we could help heal the world. What is broken in our community that we can fix? How can we be known in our community? What do we do that we should do more of? What new things should we consider? How can we become more generous so that we can be like the generous God who pays the workers who arrive last the same as those who arrive first (Matthew 20:1-16)? Your Vestry, the Outreach Ministry, and all our ministries are actively trying to hear God s call to us. We cannot do it all. But we are called to use the gifts God has given us to bring about the Reign of God. Listen to the parables during ordinary time with a relaxed mind and an open spirit. See if you are inspired. Senior Warden s Message Mensaje del Encarado de la Tercera Linda Villarreal At our most recent Vestry meeting, the Vestry was discussing the latest donation made by one of our generous parishioners to the Pastoral Care Ministry and I was suddenly struck with a deep sense of gratitude and an overwhelming feeling of peacefulness. I felt as if St. John s and our entire congregation had been blessed and grace had fallen upon our church. It was then that another Vestry member said, The Holy Spirit is definitely at work here. I sat still for a second and knew immediately that yes, indeed the Holy Spirit has been and continues to be at work at St. John s. " St. John s has received numerous gifts and contributions over the last several months from our congregation.

always know how or where we might find the funds or assistance to do the things that need to get done, it happens. Someone from the congregation always seems to step forward and offer assistance, whether it be a financial donation, or an offer to do the actual work needed, we continue to be blessed with generosity and hope. Hope for the future of St. John s, hope and strength for and in our Episcopal faith, and hope for our congregation to be able to continue walking in the Spirit and continue serving others both inside and outside our church walls. To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to be filled with Christ. I invite the congregation to pray with me that St. John s and our congregation will continue to be empowered by the Holy Spirit and allow the Holy Spirit to work through us to continue to share our faith with others. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13) Junior Warden s Report Mike Davis Happily there isn t much to report since the merry month of May which brought us record amounts of rain. While our leak in the center of the church continued, dry weather has allowed us to remove the bucket and the blue tarp which had become a virtual fixture. The rest of our buildings endured the rain quite well. Our buildings are in pretty good shape although the parish building could use a paint job. Our valiant crew of retirees continues to bravely battle against the grass, the shrubs, the trees and other adversaries. I ll mention that one other church in the vicinity (which shall go unnamed except to note that it is located at the corner of Metric and Gracy Farms) has many of the same problems as does our campus, namely that the vegetation outpaces the efforts of the groundskeeping crew--and that church pays for landscaping service. We don t. That church has as shaggy curbs along Metric as we do along Braker. In fact, the contributed labor by our groundskeepers is a significant factor in the budget for the church. I d be happy to bring anyone else into the lineup who wants to help by any activity from pulling weeds to tackling use of the backpack sprayer to lopping branches off of overgrown trees. We usually gather on Wednesday, but as a retiree, I can open up the locker and give responsible adults access to our equipment pretty much any time. As I reported last month, would-be thieves had cut into our outside copper line connecting one of our a/c units outside to the expansion valve inside the church. The high pressure of the line caused all of the Freon to P 3

exhaust into the atmosphere and probably injured the thief as well. As a result our outside unit was ruined. The vestry faced a choice. Replace only the compressor or replace the entire a/c unit including the parts inside of the parish building. The vestry opted to replace everything. A claim for theft damage was filed with our insurance company which came up with a check in an amount only about $ short of the actual cost of the new equipment. Thus that new unit now cooling down the parish building was almost a gift from our faithful and generous Church Insurance Company of Vermont if, that is, you don t count the insurance premiums the church pays and has paid for many years. Thanks to the concern and generosity of one of our members, electricians have combed all over our property with aim of fixing our long inoperative outside security lights. At long last those have been restored to working order and, one hopes, the church building is safer from mischief. That s all the news from Lake Woebegone where all the men are handsome, all the women are strong and all the children are above average. 5 Mission and Outreach Ministries Judy Hughes Labyrinth Garden The garden had a very good month is June. They received a check for $2566. from the Lola Wright Foundation. They now have enough money to finalize the garden plan and go out for bids for the water system. Hal built a model that the group used to experiment on layouts - stay tuned. Drive A Senior Scott and I made about 12 rides in June. Fr Matt went to the Drive a Senior Board meeting in June. Buckner Villas Steve Mudge is handling the services at Bucker Villas this summer while Mike is doing class work at the State Supported Living Center through July. The regular service will be at 3:00 on Sunday, July 12. Loops and Stitches and Karoline s Sunday School Class are working away with their needles and crochet hooks and knitting machines. Loops and Stitches meets the 2 nd Sunday of the month after the 10:30 service, so drop in to help or just talk to them. They make a huge contribution to people in need. St. John s Community Center Fr Matt, Autumn Jordan and I toured the food pantry at SJCC in June. Be sure to read Autumn s article, below. We donated 12 pounds of food in June. Oakcrest Nursing Home This month we are spotlighting the nursing home ministry with an article by Mark Hartwell: St. John s Nursing Home Ministry continues to thrive and be a valuable service to the residents at OakCrest Manor Nursing Home. We meet on the fourth Monday of each month and play bingo. Some of the residents require help in playing and all of them enjoy the game, as well as the interaction with our group. Following the bingo game, we serve refreshments to all. We need approximately five persons to be able to help all of those that require assistance. Since the passing of our founder, mentor, and leader, Bill Beare, we have struggled occasionally to keep enough persons attending to serve all of the folks. His passing is still felt by the residents and all of us. This ministry achieves the important goal of just being there in the lives of many of the residents who have few if any visitors. Over time, many rely on us for attention and social interaction. With the love and affection that we are able to share, I feel a part of the mission of social gospel is accomplished. I would like to share a story which exemplifies the relationships that we foster: I met Georgia Hayes about ten years ago at OakCrest. She had just arrived and had spent the last couple of years living without a home; most often under the bridge at Congress Avenue, where the bats fly. She was a P 5

very large woman with an even larger heart. She dipped snuff and was prone occasionally to profanity. I could sense her wanting my friendship so I began to visit her and her roommate in their room before bingo so I could get to know her. She loved telling me about herself but was more interested in me, my travels, and work. She was emotionally needy and very generous with hugs and affection. One Christmas I got her a CD player and made copies of many of my CDs. She was very overwhelmed and felt bad that she did not have a gift for me. Before I left that night she gave me the cross from around her neck. It was an enameled cross given to her by a staff member when another resident died. It was one of her very few possessions. The cross still hangs from the lamp by my bed and reminds me of the generosity of her heart. I later gave her a beautiful cross carved from mother of pearl from Jerusalem and she kept it with such pride that it made me cry. Over the years we remained close and this year her health declined. In April when I visited she was bed-ridden and I knew this would be the last time I saw her. I asked Fr. Matt to come and pray with her and even as frail as she was I knew how much that meant to her. This month I got the news that she had died and I felt like a part of my life had passed with her. The simple and profound love that we had shared was so important to us both and I knew that we had added to each other s lives. Much of this ministry is about loss as we see the suffering and loss of so many residents over time. Some are not as receptive to our attention and affection as was Georgia, but even the smallest gestures of kindness towards each resident are felt whether seen or not. Many of the residents have mental and or physical impairments. Regulations do not allow the staff to describe their reasons for being there, but Jo Barnes, the activity director, once shared with me that schizophrenia is the most common diagnosis. We are given the opportunity to show these folks that we care by just being there. We come for them and in the name of Jesus. The gifts I have received from these residents in seeing a smile or accepting a hug are deeply rewarding and I leave each time with something stronger in my heart than I when I arrived. The appreciation we receive seems to be an incredible reward. This is a ministry for those who want to be a part of people s lives who genuinely need attention and to be shown they are cared about. It is a small offering we make to them each month, but big in its impact. If this sounds like something for you, please join us. You will be glad that you did. St. John s Community Food Bank Autumn Jordan Chances are, if you've attended church at St. John's for any length of time, you've had opportunity to notice the ever present basket of donations of canned food and dry goods that go to the food bank at St. John's Community Center (SJCC). You may have dropped Es probable que, si usted ha asistido a la iglesia de San Juan para cualquier tiempo, Ud. ha tenido la oportunidad de observar el siempre presente canasta de donaciones de alimentos enlatados y productos secos que enviamos al banco de alimentos en el P 6

some items in there, too. You may have even bought a feather for the turkey donations that the EYC, and now the JW, collect each year for Thanksgiving. But, if you're anything like I was, you may not know much about the food bank itself. So a couple of weeks ago, I took the opportunity to sit in on a meeting that Father Matt and Judy Hughes had with the Director of SJCC, Mona Allen. We started the meeting by visiting the food bank pantry, and it was an eye-opening experience. The way I always pictured a food distribution center before was as a warehouse or grocery store. But the SJCC pantry is one room, about the size of an office. Shelves of canned and dry food line two walls, with one refrigerator and one freezer along a third wall, and paper goods stacked against the fourth. There is a table for boxing items in the center of the room. And there is plenty of space for more food on those shelves! Mona explained that the food bank is partly supplied by the USDA and the rest of the donations come from churches and individuals. The USDA food is distributed under guidelines similar to WIC. USDA food can be distributed to anyone whose income is no more than 185% of the federal poverty level. The donations from churches like ours and individuals can be donated to anyone in need. We asked Mona what items the pantry needs most, and she replied that it depends on what they get each month, but she did say that since many of their clients are homeless, they are always in need of cans of food with the self opening tab tops, for people without can openers, and food that doesn't require heating or other preparation, for those without access to a kitchen. St. John's Community Center is one of the few outreach programs that we, as a parish, have supported for many years, and especially after visiting the food bank, I can see why. As usual, I had my baby daughter, River, with me as we toured the pantry and spoke about the needs of the people in our community. I looked down into River's sweet face, and felt the connection we all P 7 Centro Comunitario de San Juan (SJCC).

have - we are families who want to provide for our children, our parents, our loved ones, and our neighbors. I hope the next time you go to the grocery store, you'll remember that basket, and pick up a couple extra cans or another box of cereal for our brothers and sisters who are hungry. I know I will! Also, I'd just like to remember Bill Beare's contribution to this ministry. I'm constantly being reminded of what a great friend he was to those in need. He was the liaison between St. John's and SJCC, and he helped to build a strong relationship there.
