I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday. I was very pleased to see parents visiting our school during American Education Week and participating in events like Are You Smarter Than A 7 th Grader. It was gratifying to be on the adult team and seeing just how smart our students are. Thank you for taking the time to come and participate and to see your young bolts in action. Changing gears a little bit, on behalf of the entire staff, a heartfelt thank you to Lisa Toohey and the PTO parents who volunteered so much of their time and effort to serve us lunch on November 15 th we really enjoyed and appreciated it. Please take a minute to review the school system s late opening/early closing procedures in this issue. I encourage you to have your own procedures in place so that your child knows what to do in case of foul weather. You can also tune into one of the radio/tv stations listed or look on the LCPS web site for up to date information. Keep in mind that it is impossible for us to notify you if your contact information is not current in our system, so be sure to send a note in with any changes or use the PIM (Parent Information Management) system on the LCPS website to update online. We have a full schedule of concerts scheduled for December and January, including a joint chorus concert with Dominion High School. Be sure to check out the dates on page 2 of this issue or on our web site to see when our talented students will strut their stuff. I highly recommend that you take the time to see a least one performance and enjoy the fruits of the students hard work, and all performances are free. After-school clubs are going strong and I encourage all students to take the time to participate. Go to the SRMS website and see what we have to offer. The selection is varied; starting with the popular soccer on Mondays and ending with the Running Club on Fridays, so make sure you re signed up. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Denise McKenna for receiving the coveted PTO Thunderbolt Award. Each quarter the students can nominate a teacher for the award. Ms. McKenna won for the excitement she creates in her classroom and all around the school. She received a cake for her students and a check for $150. As 2011 comes to a close and we are all looking forward to the winter break, I want to thank the teachers, staff and parents who make Seneca Ridge such a great school and who have been so supportive of and dedicated to our students. It is indeed a pleasure to work with such wonderful people who make every day special. I encourage our students and staff to relax and enjoy your time off but also to devote sometime each day to reading and some sort of physical activity to help keep your mind and body sharp. I wish you all a joyous and blessed holiday season, a happy new year and a safe winter break. 2 Mensaje Del Principal Hola Thunderbolts! Espero que todos hayan disfrutado la festividad de Acción de Gracias. Me complació de gran manera el haber visto padres visitando nuestra escuela durante la Semana De la Educación Americana y a su vez participando en los eventos tales como Eres más inteligente que un estudiante de 7mo grado. Fue muy gratificante ver a un equipo de adultos y ver cuán inteligentes son nuestros estudiantes. Gracias por tomar de su tiempo para acompañarnos, participar y ver sus jóvenes bolts en acción. Cambiando el tema un poco, de parte de todos los miembros de nuestra facultad, queremos extenderle las gracias a Lisa Toohey y el PTO, a los padres que actuaron como voluntarios y que donaron su tiempo y esfuerzo para servir nuestro almuerzo el 15 de Noviembre..Apreciamos todo y verdaderamente lo disfrutamos. Favor de tomarse un minuto para repasar en esta edición el sistema de la escuela para abrir tarde/ o los procedimientos de cerrar temprano. Le exhortamos tener sus propio procedimiento organizado para que en caso de una emergencia su hijo/a sepa que hacer durante una tormenta de nieve. También para más información e información actualizada usted puede conectarse a una de las radios/estaciones que se encuentran en la página web de LCPS. Recuerde que es imposible para nosotros notificarles si su información no está actualizada y correcta en nuestro sistema. Para estar seguros, envíe una nota con cualquier cambio realizado a la escuela ó use el sistema PIM (Parent Information Management) de la página web de LCPS y actualice su información. Tenemos un itinerario completo de conciertos para Diciembre y Enero, incluyendo la unión de nuestro Coro con el de Dominion High School. Recomiendo que usted saque tiempo para asistir a alguna de nuestras funciones y disfrutar así el esfuerzo y el arduo trabajo de nuestros estudiantes, todas las presentaciones serán gratuitas. Los Clubes después de la escuela cada vez están más fuertes y sólidos y por tal razón recomiendo a los estudiantes a sacar de su tiempo y participar en un club y así pueda ver lo que estamos ofreciendo. La selección es variada, comenzando con el popular soccer todos los Lunes y terminando con el club de carreras los Viernes. Así que procure apuntarse para alguno de ellos. Quisiera aprovechar esta oportunidad para felicitar a Denise McKenna por recibir el premio PTO Thunderbolt Award. Cada semestre los estudiantes pueden nominar a un maestro para el premio. La Srta. McKenna ganó por el entusiasmo que proyecta en la sala de clases y en los alrededores de la escuela. Ella recibió un cheque de $150 dólares y un pastel. Según se va acercando el final del 2011 todos estamos esperando con ansias el receso de invierno, quisiera agradecerles a todos los maestros, demás personal y a los padres por su apoyo y dedicación ya que hacen de Seneca Ridge una gran escuela. Es un gran placer trabajar con gente tan maravillosa que hacen de cada día uno muy especial. Invito a todos los estudiantes y miembros de nuestra escuela a que disfruten su tiempo libre y se relajen. Y a su vez que dediquen un poco de su tiempo para leer un poco todos los días y hagan alguna actividad física para así mantener su mente y cuerpo en óptimas condiciones. Everyone had a good time guessing who was the person behind the costume. Ms. Phillip Pictured above with the Chick-fil-A cow are Joshua Drake, Thomas Base and Asha Cheruvu. They were the first place winners (it was a three-way tie) of Are You Smarter Than A 7th Grader. The competition was sponsored by Chick-fil-A of Sugarland Crossing. A big SRMS thank you to Chick-fil-A for their for their participation and donations to the event. Congratulations to Ms. McKenna for receiving the PTO Thunderbolt Award. SRMS is partnering with LINK (an organization of local churches) to create food baskets for families in need within our community. Last year we assisted LINK in providing food to many families. Most needed items are: Spaghetti O s, powdered or canned milk, macaroni and cheese, canned meats, tomato sauce or paste, rice, juice, canned vegetables, fruit and soup. If you can help us help those in need, save up on these and other nonperishable items and then send them in. Thank you in advance for your help as we give back to our community. 5 Thunderbolt Award Seneca Ridge Middle School has an award to recognize its great staff. The Thunderbolt Award will be used to recognize and reward faculty and staff that step outside the box to make school for our students exciting, rewarding, and most of all, a positive learning experience. The award will include a monetary gift and school wide recognition. Parents, students, and teachers can nominate any staff member for this award. The PTO executive board will review all submissions and make the winning selections based on the following criteria: 1. Creative teaching strategies or positive interactions with students. 2. The number of students that the strategies or interactions will impact. 3. If the strategies or interactions can be duplicated, modified, or enhanced to positively affect students. Each quarter a winner will be selected. The winning staff member will have a Thunderbolt hung outside their classroom or office for a week and a special Thunderbolt Award will reside inside their classroom or office for the quarter in which they are the Thunderbolt Award winner. Nomination forms are easy to complete. They are available in the office and on the SRMS website: srms -- PTO. Nominations for the second quarter will be due January 19 th. 6 PTO OUTLOOK Your SRMS Parent Teacher Organization at work. I would like to thank all of the parents who have helped out at Seneca with everything from copying (big need) to assisting and/or sponsoring our November teacher luncheon. It is great to see the community come along side the faculty at Seneca to make a great middle school experience for our students. Parents really make a difference at our school and to celebrate this, the PTO is creating a High Five to Seneca Parents! program. Every time you volunteer an hour for our teachers or for the PTO, write your name and what you did on a hand (they are in a basket in the front office). The hours can be in the school, shopping for a luncheon, serving food at the cluster dinner, securing donations for programs, or managing the data base from home! The hands will be displayed in the lobby outside of the front office to show how involved our parents are. At the end of the quarter all hands will be put into a raffle for a night at the movies as a way of saying THANK YOU. In December we ll have a cookie exchange for the staff and then a Super Bowl Party for them in January. Details and dates will be in the PTO blast. If you are not already signed up for the PTO blasts, just go to the SRMS website and look for the sign up button. It is a great way to keep informed on what is going on in the school and the PTO. 7 SCHOOL CANCELLATION, DELAYED OPENING, EARLY CLOSING In the event that weather or other reasons require either closing or delaying the opening of school, announcements will be made over the following radio and TV stations by 6:00 a.m. These stations are notified by direct calls and should be the primary stations for up-to-date information. RADIO TV WINC 92.5 FM WRC TV 4 WTOP 1500 AM & FM FOX TV 5 WMAL 630 AM WJLA TV 7 WUSA TV 9 NEWS CHANNEL 8 If Loudoun County Public Schools are closed or there is an early dismissal, then Adult Education classes are also cancelled and instructors will inform students about make-up dates. Delayed Opening: A one-hour delay would mean that all morning programs would operate as usual except that they would start one hour later. A two-hour delay would mean that school opening would be delayed for two hours with specific alternatives to certain programs (exceptions to this can be found on the Loudoun County website at Early Closing: In the event that circumstances necessitate the early closing of school after school is in session, announcements will be broadcast over the same radio/tv stations listed previously. A one-hour early closing would mean that all bus routes operate as usual except starting one hour earlier than the normal time.** A two-hour early closing would mean that all bus routes operate as usual except starting two hours earlier with specific alternatives to certain programs (exceptions to this can be found on the Loudoun County website at In the event of an early closing all school activities, activity runs and athletic trips are cancelled.** **If there is a one or two hour early closing, all after-school activities requiring school bus transportation are canceled. Other school activities not requiring transportation service are at the discretion of the school principal. Please check the district website or the SRMS website for specific information. Alerts Register with Loudoun Alert to receive up-to-the-minute school status regarding closings, delays, early dismissals, and special circumstances via automatic updates. To register go to - Quick Links - Closing and Delay Information. Please inform your child of your inclement weather pick up arrangements. This will help alleviate last minute calls to the school on bad weather days. We need your consideration and cooperation in this matter. PARENT INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (PIMS) The Parent Information Management System (PIMS) is an online tool that provides a convenient way for the primary parent/guardian of a student to manage changes to their phone and/or information for the contacts in their child s record. It s as Easy as Access the PIMS link from the LCPS Public Internet site From the LCPS home screen, click on the PIMS link under Quick Links. 2. You will be guided through a series of screens where you will be prompted to enter some identifying information, assert your relationship to the student and enter updated contact information. 3. Once the request has been submitted, your child s school will review the request before accepting. Note: PIMS is simply a tool that will give those parents who so desire the ability to request changes to contact information online. This will not replace the hard-copy Emergency Card that is sent out to all families with requests for contact information updates instead it is offered as a convenience in addition to the emergency card. 7

Usted será dirigido a una serie de pantallas en donde se le pedirá ingresar alguna información con el propósito de identificar la misma, confirme su relación con el estudiante y actualice su información. 3. Una vez su solicitud haya sido suministrada, la escuela de su hijo/a revisara la información antes de aceptarla. Nota: PIMS es simplemente una herramienta que se les brinda a los padres que tenga la disposición y habilidad de realizar cambios de la información de contacto por vía internet. Esto no remplaza la tarjeta de Emergencia original que es enviada a todas las familias pidiendo la actualización de esta información- solamente es ofrecida de manera conveniente en adición a la tarjeta de emergencia. 8
