3 Dear Students and Families, Congratulations on being part of the Sunnyside District s one-to-one computing initiative and our community s transformation through technology! The Sunnyside One-to-One program began with the introduction of laptops for every fifth-grader in all 13 elementary schools in the fall of Providing laptops to students quickly transformed the classroom from teacher-centered to student centered as students took advantage of the global resources that came with Internet access and the world of learning anytime anywhere. Sunnyside saw immediate results of the one-to-one computing program. Student attendance, engagement and achievement improved, resulting in the ultimate goal of keeping our students in school and on the path to graduation. Another unanticipated outcome of the technology initiatives at Sunnyside that may be attributed to the One-to-One program is a noticeable increase in community engagement. Parent and family engagement has been a critical part of student academic achievement, and the Internet accessible laptop in their home allows parents to take advantage of District online collaboration tools. Review of student grades and attendance and greater awareness of school activities is also available to our families with Internet access. Sunnyside Research shows that one-to-one computing increases student success. Sunnyside s Oneto-One program is devoted to developing an equitable, innovative, student-centered and future-oriented learning environment. At Sunnyside, the one-to-one program design is a learning environment in which every student, grades 4-12, is provided a laptop on a direct and continuous basis throughout the school day and beyond. Coupled with a comprehensive professional development design for teachers, we have changed the architecture of learning with the primary goal being improved student achievement. With a successful bond vote in November 2011, Sunnyside s technology initiatives have been given sustainability over the next ten years. On November 8, 2011, the voice of the Sunnyside community asserted itself in affirming the District s vision for transformation through technology. This fall, One-to-One computing has been expanded to grades 4 through 9. More than 8500 students, nearly half the District s enrollment, will enjoy a one-to-one learning environment in their classrooms beginning in August Families and siblings will multiply that number to nearly 10,000 students with access to a laptop at home. We are fortunate to have an award-winning Governing Board with the vision to lead the Sunnyside District s transformation through technology. Because of the focus placed on technology integration, our students are fully engaged and enjoy authentic learning experiences resulting in a new culture of exploration and informed risk-taking. This handbook has very useful information about taking care of the laptop computers, Internet safety, responsible use of technology and how to use the new Parent Link App. We want to encourage parents to participate in technology training and use Parent Link to access information on individual student progress, school events and more. I wish you the best as you apply the information in this handbook and take advantage of the infinite educational opportunities that one-to-one computing provides. Sincerely, Manuel L. Isquierdo, Ed.D. Proud Superintendent

6 SUNNYSIDE One to One: A Complete Guide to One to One Computing Introduction and Basic Rules In Sunnyside students made history in our community! In that year, the fifth grade was the first grade level in which all students were assigned a netbook computer to use in class and at home. This year the One-to-One computing program is expanding to include all 4 th thru 9 th grade students. One-to- One computing will dramatically change teaching and learning, to give our students the best preparation possible for high school graduation, college and careers. Some Basic Rules District laptops issued to students and their families are required to go through Compliance Checks. SUSD staff will randomly check that students are following the rules. No one should eat or drink near the computer. Students are responsible for all content found on their laptops. Do not allow any unauthorized users access to your laptop. Laptops should be completely Shut Down when not in use. Laptops should always be stored in the district provided case when transporting to home or class. Do not swing, bang, throw or drop the case against anything or anyone. Students and parents will be held accountable for any damage caused to the laptops that result from misuse or negligence. Never download or install anything on to the laptop without appropriate authorization from your teacher or district personnel. This includes (but is not limited to) music, games, video files or any external/internet installed applications. This includes CD/DVD games as well as Internet installed games. No stickers or markings of any kind are allowed on the laptops or cases. They are not to be defaced, damaged or tagged in any way. This includes writing your name on the case. Sending or retrieving any information that violates school or district policies regarding content that is threatening, racially offensive, abusive, defamatory, profane, sexually oriented, pornographic, or obscene will result in appropriate disciplinary action. See section 9 of the SUSD District Handbook for Student Rights and Responsibilities. Students should never knowingly transmit computer viruses or perform actions that would intentionally waste or disrupt network resources. The student username and password are not to be shared with anyone except their parents/guardians. Students are not permitted to change their password. Parents/Guardians and students will abide by all district policy, local, state and federal laws. Sunnyside district will cooperate with all law agencies to support these policies, laws, and rules. Never access, delete or change other student s folders, work, files or projects without specific permission from a teacher or other administrator. Per district policy, all files stored on any district profile or devices are the property of the district and are subject to regular review and monitoring at any given time. 7 SUNNYSIDE One to One: A Complete Guide to One to One Computing Section 1: Laptop use at school 1.1 Where to Save Files Sunnyside teachers and students have access to the Sunnyside Cloud for accessing your digital school work anywhere, anytime. If you follow the instructions for saving your files in this section you will be able to access your saved files anywhere you can access the Internet. The Sunnyside Cloud access is located at and will be introduced in class by your teacher. If your family does not pay to access the Internet at home, please save a copy of what you started at school to the H: Drive or I: Drive of your laptop. You may also save to a USB Flash Drive o o Always give the document another name, such as Arizona Report Version 2 rather than the exact same name as your (I:) drive document, so as not to accidentally overwrite your school work. Some teachers train their students to save with a new version name added to the end of the file name each time students work on a document. (ver1, then ver2, then ver3, etc) The highest number is then always the last worked on, and data can easily be tracked backwards. On returning to school, place all homework on your student (H:) drive. When at school, students should always save everything to their (H:) drives and not the user Desktop. SUSD network drives are backed up regularly by the SUSD Information Technology Department and lost work often may be recovered. Items saved only to the user Desktop will be lost if there is a hard drive error or other equipment problems. Lock Your Laptop Laptops should always be locked when not in use. For your own security, hold down the Windows key on the lower left of the keyboard and push the letter L key. To unlock, perform a Ctrl + Alt + Delete as if to log on to the laptop. Retype the login name and password. Installing Software at Home Students do not have computer permissions to install any software to the laptops (Such as Limewire). Home printers, mice, keyboards or other software cannot be installed by students. Any messages received during web use regarding updates to Flash, Adobe, Java, etc., should be declined (select No ), as any software install will fail. Installing unapproved software could introduce a virus into the network and could cause laptop instability and failure. SUNNYSIDE One to One: A Complete Guide to One to One Computing page 3

8 SUNNYSIDE One to One: A Complete Guide to One to One Computing Section 2: Responsible Use of Technology 2.1 Overview: The Sunnyside Unified School District is committed to being a tech-savvy district, where technology is transforming teaching and learning. The goal is graduation and college readiness for all students. The Sunnyside Unified School District in Tucson, Arizona is becoming a national model for transforming teaching and learning using technology. Recognizing that technology literacy is as necessary a skill as reading for students committed to succeeding in the 21st century, Sunnyside is creating classrooms of the future and is working to expand access to the Internet throughout the community. 2.2: Technology Policies and Guidelines Increased access to technology has numerous benefits, but it also has the potential for abuse. For this reason, the Sunnyside School District has specific board policies that address appropriate use of technology and electronic resources. The Board policies regarding technology and electronic resources apply to computer use at school; they also apply to home use of the SUSD laptop. Compliance checks monitor the use of the computer whether at home or at school. Refer to the SUSD District Handbook of Student Rights and Responsibilities for additional information. SUSD District policy for electronic resources is covered in Board Policy IJNDB EGAEA. These policies have replaced the former Acceptable Use Policy, and they apply to SUSD equipment, including laptops, whether used at home or at school. Policies IJNDB and EGAEA describe in a comprehensive manner the appropriate and inappropriate use of the Internet, as well as responsible use of electronic resources by students, parents and staff. 2.3: Board policy IJNDB: Use of Electronic Resources The Sunnyside Unified School District views the use of electronic resources as central to the delivery of its mission and educational goals, and as such maintains the expectation that all students will use electronic resources as an essential part of their learning experiences. It is the policy of the District to maintain an environment that promotes ethical and responsible conduct in all electronic resource activities by staff and students. The Internet is an electronic highway connecting thousands of electronic resources and millions of individual subscribers. With access to electronic resources and people all over the world, also comes the availability of material that is inappropriate in the educational setting. The District believes that the valuable information and collaboration available on this worldwide network far outweighs the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with the educational goals of the District. Limits, controls, and prohibitions shall be placed on the following areas for student use: Access to inappropriate content Safety and security in direct electronic communications Unauthorized online access or activities Unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal information. SUNNYSIDE One to One: A Complete Guide to One to One Computing page 4

Chargers should be kept with your laptop case at all times Section 6: Connecting the Laptop to the Internet 6.1: Home Internet Service Provider (ISP) There are many Internet service providers. Each one has their own equipment (modem, cables, router) possibly their own software (installed by the provider or on a CD for users to install) and their own setup to follow. For help with these items, please contact the provider for technical support service. 6.2: General Tips for All Providers: Students may not install any software to their laptops. If your ISP requires installation of software, you will need to contact the Customer Support Center. Do not change IE settings for blocking popups: SUSD server connections require that popups are enabled (this is set correctly on your school laptop.) 6.3: Different Type of Internet Service Providers Internet connections come in different configurations with different price tags and suppliers. Each has different speeds, connections and software that can affect your student s laptop use. Sunnyside does not currently have a contract with an Internet Service Provider for family home Internet access. Dial-up Internet Access Dial up providers typically require software installation. If dial up is your means of access, please contact the Information Technologies Helpdesk (545-HELP) for assistance with installing software.. Access is through the home s phone system. Dial-up connections have several steps to activate each time they are used. While the home phone may be connected to a separate wall jack than the laptop, unless the home has two phone lines, it is only possible to use the phone or the Internet, not both at the same time. If the home has call waiting, Internet sessions may be interrupted by phone calls. If the home does not have call waiting, callers will receive a busy signal. (The ISP can give directions on how to disable call waiting while using the computer.)

17 One to One 2.0: A Complete Guide to One to One Computing in the K 12 Environment Cable Internet Access Access is through the home s cable or digital TV outlet. One to One Computing: Transforming Education through Technology page 3
