1 Connection from School to Home Grade 2 Math Module 3 Topic A Number Line to Clock Here is a fun activity to help your child learn about telling the time on a clock with 5-minute intervals. Here is what you do: Find a 24-inch ribbon or string and draw a mark at every 2 inches. Step 1: Lay the ribbon straight on the table or floor as a horizontal number line. Ask your child to count by fives as you touch each mark on the ribbon. Step 2: Form a circle with the ribbon, and ask your child what it looks like. If they don t think of it, suggest that it s like a clock. Have your child count by fives from 0 to 60. Step 3: Pretending it s a clock, tell your child to start at 12:00 and count by fives again as you touch each mark on the clock. 12:05, 12:10, 12:15, 12:20, 12:25, 12:30, 12:35, 12:40, 12:45, 12:50, 12:55 Challenge: Try counting backwards around the clock. Here is what you do: You will need a meter stick or measuring tape. You can always make your own ruler by drawing marks on a string or long strip of paper. Step 1: Tell your child to put their 2 index fingers on the 30-cm mark. Then tell them to slide their left finger to 13 cm. Step 2: Ask your child, How many centimeters did you slide down? Have your child check their answer by counting back down with their right finger, touching each centimeter until they reach 13. 5 Connection from School to Home Grade 2 Math Module 3 Topic C Three Values of Sticks Here is an easy activity to help your child learn about bundling units to make counting easier. Here is what you do: You will need: 10 toothpicks 10 popsicle sticks 1 larger stick (for example, a paint stirrer, wooden ruler, etc.) Explain to your child that, for this activity, a toothpick represents 1 unit, a popsicle stick represents ten units, and the large stick represents one hundred units.. 10 x = 1 Step 1: Tell your child to count to 10, picking up one toothpick at a time as they count. When they get to 10, ask them to trade the toothpicks for the next biggest unit (a popsicle stick). Ask your child, How many units does a popsicle stick represent? (10) Tell your child to continue counting by ones, starting with 10 and picking up one toothpick at a time. 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, x = 1 *If you don t have enough of these items, you could use a different type of object of various sizes. Step 2: Repeat Step 1, but this time have your child count by tens, picking up one popsicle stick at a time. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 When your child reaches 100, they should trade their popsicle sticks for the next biggest unit (the paint stirrer or ruler.) When your child reaches 20, tell them to trade their toothpicks again. They should now have 2 popsicle sticks. Ask them how many toothpicks that represents. (20) Continue counting this way up to 100 or more. Step 3: Ask your child to make the number 129 using a combination of the three types of sticks, or units. Tell your child to close their eyes. Give them one more toothpick and ask your child to tell you what number they have in their hand now, without looking. (130) Then do the same with one more popsicle stick. (140) Challenge: Ask your child what is the biggest number they can make, if they use all of the sticks. (210) Did your child like these activities? YES NO Was the activity easy to do? Al llegar a 20, pídale a su hijo(a) que vuelva a cambiar sus palillos. Ahora debería tener 2 palitos de paleta. Pregúntele a su hijo(a) cuántos palillos representa eso. (20) Sigan contando de esta manera hasta 100 o más. Tercer paso: Pídale a su hijo(a) que haga el número 129 usando una combinación de los tres tipos de palos o unidades. Here is what you do: You will need: 11 pennies 4 dimes Step 1: Ask your child, What is the value of 1 penny (in cents)? (one) Then have your child count with you as you lay 10 pennies on the table, one by one. Step 2: Ask your child, What is the value of 1 dime (in cents)? (ten) Then tell your child to trade the 10 pennies for 1 dime. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Step 3: Tell your child to continue counting. Start by touching the dime, then lay down 10 more pennies, one by one, as your child counts along. 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 When your child reaches 20, ask them what they can do to reduce the number of pennies. (Trade 10 pennies for 1 dime.) Repeat this process until you reach 40 cents (4 dimes). Did your child like these activities? YES NO Was the activity easy to do? Here is what you do: Step 1: Explain to your child, I ll say a number, and you say the number that is 10 more. Step 2: Repeat Step 1, but with your child saying 10 less. Example: You say, 50. Your child says, 60! Practice with these numbers: 90, 130, 20, 110, 60, 130, 190, 170, 10 Step 3: Explain to your child, I ll say a number, and you say the number that is 100 more. Example: You say, 50. Your child says, 150! Practice with these numbers: 70, 300, 120, 480, 600, 330, 900, 710, 290 Example: You say, 50. Your child says, 40! Practice with the same numbers from Step 1. Step 4: Repeat Step 3, but with your child saying 100 less. Example: You say, 500. Your child says, 400! 11 Connection from School to Home Grade 2 Math Module 3 Topic F Age Comparisons Here is an easy activity to help your child learn about subtracting and comparing multi-digit numbers. Here is what you do: Have a pencil and paper ready for your child to in this activity. Step 1: Tell your child to find out and record all the ages of all the people in their family, including their siblings, parents, and grandparents. If you want to make this more challenging, and you think your child is ready for it, only tell them the years that you were born and ask them to calculate your ages. Step 2: Have your child tell you the names of all the family members in order of their age, from youngest to oldest. Step 3: Ask your child to make comparisons between the ages of at least 4 pairs of family members. Try using both older and younger comparison. Examples: Mom is 27 years older than me.
