3 JUly / August 2013 The Bishop s Perspective Take a dive into spiritual reading Isn t it amazing how a change in the seasons gives us a new way of seeing reality? Now that the summer season is really here, I enjoy an entirely different insight into the beauty and wonder of our scenic Diocese. The slogan promoting the state of Michigan truly applies to the nine counties that make up the Diocese of Kalamazoo: Pure Michigan! In these summer months, the sky seems that much bluer, the grass greener from our wet spring, our Lake Michigan shoreline is one of the most breath-taking in all the country (maybe the world), and everything seems so much more well, pure during this summer time. And the welcome slower pace that usually occurs in these summer months brings a different kind of activity. Where our parishes were previously bustling with a host of meetings and religious education classes and other routine gatherings, in these summer months many of them instead are busy with vacation bible schools and parish picnics allowing people to connect to each in a casual atmosphere of fun and fellowship. Summer time has been more of a slow time for everyone, when even some businesses move to summer hours, and a time when many of us take our family vacations. Usually, that is also true for the Vatican when, because of the extreme heat of July and August, most of the normal business becomes quite reduced and when many of those who work in the Vatican offices take time to literally head for the mountains where it is cooler. Even the Holy Father traditionally would spend these months at Castel Gondolfo in the Italian mountain areas for rest and renewal. However, as the song goes, the times, they are a changing. It has become clear that our new Holy Father, Pope Francis is setting a different tradition, and establishing a new normal. So, it appears that it is business as usual at the Vatican even in these hot and sultry summer months. In fact, on the first Friday of July, when in previous years hardly any activity would have been taking place in the Vatican, we saw evidence of some of the greatest and most important activity in Pope Francis short four-month pontificate. On that date, we were given the wonderful news that Pope Francis has approved the cause of sainthood for both Blessed Pope John XXIII and Blessed Pope John Paul II. These two tremendously influential popes helped guide the Church in the modern world, and both their lives are shining examples of faith and holiness to the entire world. I knew Blessed John XXIII only from a distance in my young formative years, but this simple, holy and relatively elderly Cardinal Roncalli, elected as many thought to be a caretaker of the Papacy until the next Pope would be elected, changed the entire history and direction of the Church by opening the windows and letting in the fresh air of the Second Vatican Council. Already in his lifetime, he was known by the faithful as Good Pope John. In regard to Blessed Pope John Paul II, I had the great honor to personally meet Pope John Paul II in 1987 when he was still only in his late 50 s, and I was struck by his strength, passion and warmth. The entire Church watched him travel the globe several times, teaching the faith and bringing the message of Christ s love to every part of the world. We also watched him age, and become infirm and dis-abled due to his deteriorating health and the aging process. Yet, he never lost the strength of his conviction of faith, the passion of his love for Christ and His Church, and the warmth of his great and holy personality. During his lifetime, he was becoming known by the faithful as John Paul, the Great. These two holy men of God/priests/bishops/Cardinals/Popes, whose holiness was visible to everyone around them, will very soon be counted among the canonized Saints of the Church, and I know we all look forward to that great day. That same hot, summer-day in Rome, July 5th, was also an important day for the Church for another special reason. It was on that day that the Church received the much-anticipated first encyclical (letter) from Pope Francis, Lumen Fidei (Light of Faith). In releasing this encyclical which was begun by Pope Benedict before he retired, Pope Francis explained that the letter supplements Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI s encyclicals on charity and hope. In taking up this work on the very important topic of faith in the midst of the Year of Faith and making it his own, we now have a much better insight into Pope Francis as the Chief Teacher of the Faith. It seems particularly fitting that we welcomed Pope Francis insights into how faith can illuminate and strengthen our lives on the very same day that with his approval, he moved forward the cause for canonization two of his great predecessors, who taught the Catholic faith to generations of Catholics. It is during this Year of Faith, which began last October and ends this coming November, all of us as people of faith are being called to a deeper relationship with our Loving God and Father, His Son Jesus our Lord and their Holy Spirit a relationship that, hopefully, is made stronger by our deepening knowledge of our Catholic faith. Through a number of diocesan liturgies, programs and activities, as well as those being sponsored by most of our parishes, I pray that we have grown more deeply in our faith. And while these have been great ways to grow in faith, I would like to suggest another summer-time way to consider: reading a good book. Many of us love to spend some leisurely summer days by doing some light reading beach reads as they might sometimes be called. But along with those John Grisham, James Patterson and Nicholas Sparks novels, how about considering some spiritual reads. I d like to propose that it s a wonderful time to read the many rich and important Church documents, including Pope Francis newly-issued Lumen Fidei. So often we rely on the cliff notes version of these important documents. (Remember those summaries for all the great works of literature that some of us as students would read instead of the full text, which gave us just Waiting in Joyful Hope Continued on page 4 The Good News 3 La Perspectiva del Obispo Sumérgete en la lectura espiritual No es asombroso cómo un cambio en las estaciones del año, nos dan una nueva manera de ver la realidad?

Partnership brings local Catholic radio to diocese 91.5 AM Holy Family Radio, Grand Rapids, has partnered with Vineyard Academy, Richland, Mich., to bring Catholic radio to the airwaves serving the counties in the Diocese of Kalamazoo. Beginning this summer, a new station, WVAV 91.5, will carry Holy Family Radio programming including content from the EWTN and Ave Maria Radio networks as well as local diocesan event, catechetical and devotional resource coverage. The station is made possible through the efforts of donors who supported efforts to bring local Catholic programming to the diocese. The station broadcasts from a tower in the Vicksburg area and plans are underway to bring a radio studio to the local area. The cost to build the tower near Vicksburg was close to $150,000 and according to Cheryl Doyle, Holy Family Radio president, donations have come in around $60,000. We trust the Holy Spirit will move the hearts of many more faithful Catholics to generously help with the remaining balance, she said. Our media outlets feed us bite-sized information, and if we simply rely on them, we are lulled into thinking we ve received the entire picture. But relying on another s interpretation, especially if it comes from the secular media, robs us of the experience of reading and benefiting firsthand the insights from our Holy Father our Supreme Teacher. Just as an example, consider these beautiful words from Chapter 2 of Lumen Fidei Faith does not merely gaze at Jesus, but sees things as Jesus himself sees them with his own eyes In many areas in our lives we trust others who know more than we do. We trust the architect who builds our home; the pharmacist who gives us medicine for healing, the lawyer who defends us in court. We also need someone trustworthy and knowledgeable where God is concerned. Jesus, the Son of God, is the one who makes God known to us. (cf. Jn. 1:18). (#18) Or how about this one: Faith without truth does not save, it does not provide a sure footing. It remains a beautiful story, the projection of our deep yearning for happiness, something capable of satisfying us to the extent we are willing to deceive ourselves. Either that or it is reduced to a lofty sentiment which brings consolation and cheer, yet remains prey to the vagaries of our spirit and the changing seasons, incapable of sustaining a steady journey through life. [24] Perhaps this summer you can make it a goal to try and read at least one encyclical. Start with Lumen Fidei neatly organized into four chapters, about 82 pages. Take your time and read just three pages a day and you ll be finished before summer s ended. Or maybe start with a different one. Since we continue in this Year of Faith which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, why not consider reading some of those rich and beautiful Council documents. My two favorites, and considered to be two of the greatest of all the Council documents, are: the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium) and the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes). They are well-worth your reading this summer, or anytime. During these summer months when we seek to disconnect from the bustle of everyday life, and re-connect with rest and relaxation, let s not disconnect from our faith. Instead take this time to set a goal and learn just a little bit more about what Our Holy Father, and our previous Holy Fathers, are teaching us. I know you will be pleasantly surprised, and at the same time, enriched by a deeper understanding of our faith what could be better than that? May God bless you during these summer days and may you find the peace and take the time to hear what He is speaking to your heart about you and Him in the most important relationship of your life. NOTE: All papal documents may be found and downloaded from the Vatican website: or visit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website to order a published booklet version: Check out Bishop Bradley s Sunday Reading Reflections posted weekly on the diocesan website: versiones resumen de estos documentos importantes. 5 JUly / August 2013 St. Jerome blesses newly remodeled church In May, Catholic Charities Diocese of Kalamazoo let the Catholic community know of a specific need. Thanks to a generous grant, they were adding five new apartments with a total of eight beds for older homeless youth in the Ark Supported Community Living program. However, they had no furnishing for these new homes. Many of the youth served by this program move off the streets and into safe and stable housing for the first time in their lives. While there, they work on life goals and learn skills to help them gain employment, complete education and ultimately achieve their goals to become self-sufficient. People responded generously to Catholic Charities call and donated enough furnishings to fill three apartments with a total of Waiting in Joyful Hope Community helps create home for new Ark apartments five beds. In addition, volunteers traveled around the diocese to pick up these items and help move youth into their new homes. A new healthcare practice is forming in the Kalamazoo diocese to offer healthcare from a Catholic perspective. The organization, called Holy Family Healthcare, arose out of a Catholic physicians guild in the Kalamazoo area that met regularly to discuss issues of Catholic healthcare. These physicians found that many were encountering the same issues in their practices, issues in the world of healthcare that run counter to the Catholic practice of medicine. Holy Family Healthcare formed to meet the needs of patients who want Catholic healthcare. The group filed for non-profit status last month and hope to start a practice before the end of the year in Kalamazoo. Holy Family Healthcare exists to care for each person as would Jesus and His Holy Family. According to Dr. Don Bouchard, president of the new organization, they seek to put spirituality into healthcare and see Christ in each patient they serve. It s On Sunday, July 7, Bishop Paul J. Bradley, blessed the newly renovated St. Jerome Parish in Battle Creek. Many priests from around the diocese concelebrated the Mass along with pastor, Rev. Matthew Manalel. Part of the renovations included the addition of a new altar (shown below) and moving the crucifix (shown left) to a more central location. Other renovations include a new baptismal font and additional interior upgrades. St. Jerome s was founded in Caption: Lenia Harris, Ark Supported Community Living Case Manager, shown left, helps a client move into her new apartment. Holy Family Healthcare seeks to extend the compassion of Christ in medicine about being the embodiment of Christ at this time with this person, said Dr. Bouchard. We are also called to see the suffering of Christ in each patien. Like the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, how often are physicians in the presence of Christ in the suffering patient and they don t even recognize it? Catholic physicians are not alone in trying to provide healthcare with care and compassion. According to Dr. Bouchard, what makes the practice of medicine Catholic for any group is its alignment with the Magisterium of the Church and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare in America document put out by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. These directives provide the basis of care and compassion for the patient from a Catholic perspective. This means that Catholic healthcare is about more than what physicians should or should not do. People say as Catholics, we can t do this or that, said Dr. Bouchard. But like Blessed John Paul II, our focus is on the positive: providing care and compassion to the individual and upholding the dignity of the person from conception to natural death. Other services the group hopes to provide in the near future include a parish nursing ministry and education on Catholic teachings such as Natural Family Planning and Theology of the Body. They are looking for nurses and teachers to get involved in each of these ministries. David Adam s father did before he died was to write a check to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Naturally, this impressed his son, and Fr. Adams supported the work of the Society for his entire life. When he was pastor at St. Ann in Augusta, he made sure that this group was well funded and encouraged. Meanwhile, the minister of Gull Lake United Methodist Church (GLUMC) needed a leave-of-absence for health reasons, and the congregation pondered how to help him with his obligations. Two members, Charles and Jill, approached Colleen at St. Ann to find out how to assist people St. Vincent de Paul style. Colleen invited them to the next meeting. They began by working in the food pantry and the work has grown and expanded for most of a decade. Now there are ten Methodists in this St. Vincent de Paul group who help run the food pantry, make home visits, and contribute financially from their own congregation s collections. I asked Jill why they decided to join forces with the Catholics? Here s what she told me: We were already supporting missionaries, local charities, and going on mission trips ourselves, but St. Vincent de Paul filled the need inside us to help our own neighbors in Richland. Colleen and the other Vincentians made us feel very welcome in their group immediately. Where else did this collaboration lead you? I became curious about some of our theological differences, so I took the series of RCIA classes at St. Ann, and then joined a Bible study. It was not threatening to my own faith, and it helped me understand my fellow Vincentians better. We have soup suppers at GLUMC and the Presbyterians and St. Vincent members join us. One of our GLUMC Vincentians works with SVdP in Florida when she goes there every winter. The next thing we might do is invite them to join with us for our vacation Bible school. That would be fun I think Jesus would be pleased about the kids being together. It does sound like something He might like. Theology on Tap wraps up this month The Diocese of Kalamazoo summer Theology on Tap series wraps up with two more sessions. On July 26th, 7 p.m. at TGIFridays in Kalamazoo, Msgr. Tom Martin will speak on the topic God present in our work lives. On August 2nd, at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Portage, Bishop Bradley will join participants in a closing celebration Mass at 7 p.m. and an ice cream social afterwards. All young adults, college age through their 30 s are welcome to attend whether they have made it to all or none of the previous sessions. 6 6 The Good News Waiting in Joyful Hope JUly / August 2013 Three new Priests ordainded for the Diocese The diocese is richer with three new priests after the Mass of Priestly Ordination of Rev. Evelio Ramirez, Rev. Thomas McNally and Rev. Benjamin Huynh (shown right). In his opening comments, Bishop Paul J. Bradley acknowledged the multi-cultural aspect of those participating as he said, Welcome. Congratulations. God bless you! in English, Spanish (Bienvenidos; Felicitaciones; Que. Dios Los Bendiga) and Vietnamese (Xin chao don moi nguoi; Xin chuc mung tat ca; Xin thien Chua chuc lanh). In his homily, Bishop Bradley explained the profound commitment that the newly ordained will have in their work of spreading the gospel. Very shortly they will prostrate themselves here before us and before God, in an act that demonstrates their willingness to give themselves completely for the rest of their lives to be a priest of Jesus Christ, he said. And then, in profound silence, as I lay my hands upon their heads, through the power of the Holy Spirit, they will be ordained priests of Jesus Christ forever commissioned to bring Christ to the world, and to be Christ for those to whom they are sent. Rev. Benjamin Huynh, shown above and right with his extended family, many who traveled from Vietnam for his ordination, has been appointed Parochial Vicar for St. Thomas More Student Parish, Kalamazoo. 7 JUly / August 2013 SCOUTING NEWS EDITOR S NOTE: The Good News seeks to recognize those scouts who have achieved the rank of Eagle in the previous year. If we missed you, or if you are scheduled to complete your Eagle project this year, we invite you to send your information to Tim McNamara, Scouting Liaison, at tmcnamara@dioceseofkalamazoo.org. Please send your Court of Honor picture, troop number, parish name, parish involvement and a brief description of your Eagle Scout project. Charles Kormanik is a parishioner of St. Joseph Parish, St. Joseph. For his Eagle project, Charles renovated the pedestrian entrance at the south end of Klock Park in Benton Harbor. Highlights from the endeavor include the removal of an unsightly old chain-link gate, the building of two new five-foot-tall brick and limestone pillars fashioned after the grand old pillars that once stood there, repairing the cobblestone road immediately adjacent to the entrance, and doing some extensive landscaping in the surrounding area. Tyler Borden is a parishioner of St. Martin of Tours, Vicksburg. For his Eagle project, Tyler built a new 66 foot long retaining wall and re-landscaped the waterfront lawn at the Friends of Vicksburg Youth property at Barton Lake. He engineered and oversaw the entire project, enlisting and directing assistance from family, friends, and volunteers from school and Scouts to provide for the upgrade to this facility so that others, specifically youth, could benefit from it. Chris Lucas is a parishioner of St. Monica, Kalamazoo. For his Eagle project, Chris renovated the Paw Paw Middle School Courtyard. Included in this undertaking were the cleaning up of overgrown plants, resituating a stone walkway, re-mulching the necessary beds, and planting seed for new grass. Chris organized and coordinated a number of generous volunteers to plan and complete this project. Michael Crandell is a parishioner of St. Ambrose, Parchment. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Service project, Michael improved several different landscape areas around his parish grounds. This included re-landscaping an abandoned bed and improving the drainage within the bed, enhancing an overflow parking lot at St. Ambrose and constructing a water collection irrigation system to assist volunteers of the parish in watering the gardens. Waiting in Joyful Hope Young men earn top scouting award Furry friends get a boost from the LMC Girl Scouts Lake Michigan Catholic Elementary Junior Girl Scout Troop #30522 spent a majority of their school year helping out the cats and dogs of Seven Star Pet Sanctuary and Rescue. Their efforts started out in a quest to earn the Girl Scouts Bronze award led them to community advocacy for the numerous stray animals in Berrien County. The Girl Scouts Bronze award is an award based on team effort. Individually they collected food, cat litter and toys for the animals. As a team they all made homemade cat and dog treats and sold them at the Alex Mandarino s Holiday Bazaar last November. The girls continued to march on their own accord by walking several dogs and puppies in the St. Joseph Reindog Parade in December. Shortly after the parade the puppies and adult dogs were adopted. They continued to promote the adoption path by making and distributing flyers at their school to encourage all students to be aware that these animals need a home. Finally, after raising money all year long and getting a generous donation from Bill Church of Sodus, Mich., the troop presented Seven Star a professional sign and cleaning supplies. Bob Creagan, Chaplain shortage continues in the military The Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services, which determines the policy for how the church participates in the chaplain corps, interprets canon law as requiring that only priests may serve as chaplains. Some other countries, including Canada, allow permanent deacons to also serve as chaplains. Msgr. Frank Pugliese, vicar general of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, said deacons cannot be chaplains because they do not have the full care of souls, meaning they cannot celebrate Mass or hear confessions. So to put a deacon in the situation of being a chaplain leaves the chaplaincy in the hands of someone who can t do the entire ministry from a Catholic perspective. If they re Catholic, the least you want them to be able to do is say Mass. He said it seems extremely unlikely the archdiocese would change that policy any time soon. Instead, he said recruitment of chaplains has taken a new direction, with the military archdiocese co-sponsoring the education of seminarians, who commit, with the approval of their dioceses, to serving in the military for a while. This year we had several By Fran Denny Title: Overcoming the Fear of Holiness: The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life by James Martin, SJ. 397 pp. Harper One, $ Is the Ignatian tradition of doing everything Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam ( for the greater glory of God ) a bit out of your league? Are you happy that Pope Francis and the other Jesuits throughout the world have had the persistence to follow this tradition? Are you happy that they get things done (like run 28 colleges and universities in the USA and much more) and pray for your soul? Do you secretly, timidly wish you could join them but can t see the way to holiness in this demanding and often unholy world? Read The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything without intimidation. Be ready to chuckle and to allow that you may be on the way of proceeding toward the best version of yourself, at your own pace. The reality is that God is always with you, knows all about you and is still willing to love you and be your best friend and your God. So, why not be a good friend to God? Are you willing to discover peace, joy and freedom? This book has ideas about how to do these and other everyday things. St. Ignatius, a Spaniard born about 450 years ago, founded the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. After a young adult life that he had given over to the vanities of the world, he was graced with the wisdom to develop the way of proceeding. There are four ways in Ignatian spirituality: finding God in all things (encompassing all that is in your life); being a contemplative in action (seeing the world as your Navy Lt. Commander Jean Marie Sullivan, a special assistant to the chief of Navy operations, poses for a photo June 7 during the Joint Women's Leadership Symposium outside Washington. Commander Jean Marie Sullivan, a special assistant to the chief of Navy operations, is an active Catholic who helped fill the gap left by the shortage of Catholic chaplains as a shipboard extraordinary minister of holy Communion during her assignment on a frigate about a decade ago. She said she was trained to conduct Communion services and carefully reserved the consecrated hosts in a locked safe in her quarters. On Ash Wednesday she obtained some ashes to use for a simple service, as well. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, she said. On a ship with 330 people, we d have about five people each Sunday, then on Ash Wednesday it seemed like the whole ship showed up. Msgr. Pugliese told CNS that policy changed years ago... because of reported abuses of the Eucharist. In the military, custody of the Eucharist is a very difficult thing. Msgr. Pugliese said there is a system of military personnel known as Catholic representatives who may conduct liturgies of the word in the absence of a priest, and who help make sure a Catholic chaplain is periodically available on a ship or that Catholic personnel can get to a Mass at a church near a posting. Jesuit author s book offers humorous spirituality how to monastery); believing in the incarnational spirituality (the nearness of God); and, being free and detached (from unimportant things). Jesuit spirituality encourages active engagement and allows that we are busy and we need to get things done. The way of proceeding works with that. Chapters in this book present many examples and suggestions about how to use the way of proceeding in decision making, friendship and love, acceptance and suffering, and living the simple life. And there are more ideas about how to move from where you are today to where you might go if you let yourself be who God intended or gifted you to be. Fr. Martin expertly weaves solid information with humorous anecdotes to make for very enjoyable and informed reading. Have you heard this one? [A] Franciscan, a Dominican, and a Jesuit [are] celebrating Mass together when the lights suddenly go out in the church. The Franciscan praises the chance to live more simply. The Dominican gives a learned homily on how God brings light to the world. The Jesuit goes to the basement to fix the fuses. (p. 2) The highlight of this book, for me, is the lovely explanation of the Examen. It is a daily prayerful exercise in spirituality that requires no books, no pencil or paper, no memorization, no particular setting, just your attention and the time you want to devote to your most important relationship your relationship with God. Want more? You could read the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, written in the mid-sixteenth century, or you could read The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything as a starter. I highly recommend it. I also recommend talks by Fr. Martin that you can find on You Tube. God bless you on your way.

9 JUly / August 2013 Rev. Ron Rolheiser column Recently I attended an Institute on contemplative awareness at which James Finley was the keynotespeaker. He brings some pedigree to the task. He has nearly forty years of experience as a therapist, is a much sought-after lecturer, has written extensively and deeply on the subject of contemplation, and, as a young man, for several years, had Thomas Merton as his spiritual director and mentor. He knows of what he speaks. I would like to share some of his insights with you by way of a collage of sound bytes, each of which has a certain stand-alone quality; but, when taken together, also shed some light on the nature of God, on the nature of contemplation, and on our struggles with both faith and contemplation. Here are some of Finley s perspectives: The mystics bear witness to the perfectly holy nature of human existence, to the fact that we are infinitely loved and held in existence Waiting in Joyful Hope Contemplative sound bytes explore God s nature by love, and that there are times when we momentarily glimpse and taste that in our lives. A mystic is a person who has been transformed by such an experience. Anxiety comes from our estrangement from the consciousness of God s love inside us. Why do we spend so many hours trapped outside the richness of our own lives, living like persons standing outside our own houses looking in through the windows of our own homes? Or, worse still, why are we inside our own houses but in a mental condition that has us believing we are living outside? What must we do to wake up before we die? Our lives are habitually pressured and so this is the perennial task: How do we, in the midst of our pressured lives, give ourselves over to the love that holds us? We cannot make a graced moment happen, but we can work at putting ourselves into a position where we offer the least resistance to be overtaken by a graced moment. Contemplative awareness isn t hard to find it s hard to not run away from. Contemplative awareness is seeing things as they are. It s resting in God. To be in contemplative awareness is to sit like an unlearned child, in a time of nonthinking. By sitting still we can learn to be still. Contemplation depends upon fidelity: If you are faithful to your practice, your practice will be faithful to you. There are some simple rules for the practice of contemplation: Sit still. Sit straight. Have your eyes closed or lowered. Take slow deep natural breaths. Have your hands in a comfortable position. Then be present, open, and awake: Do not cling to nor reject anything that comes to you in thought. As a thought arises, let it arise, if it lingers, let it linger, if it passes away, let it pass away, but don t let the thought carry you away with it. Move gently and slowly in prayer don t violate your body s stillness. A recommended exercise: Go to your room just before sunset some night for no other reason than to be there with God when the sun sets. Have absolutely no other agenda than to watch it grow dark. Sit for a full hour. Sit in the unrelenting sovereignty of the day s end. Sit in radical obedience to the falling light. You ll know solitude. People who pray regularly generally do not pray well... but they become persons who rely upon God to make their prayer well. And those who pray regularly will, like everyone else, still experience sadness and death, but sadness and death will no longer have a tyranny over them. There is a difference between spiritual sweetness and spiritual consolation : Sweetness is feeling good while in prayer; consolation is the sense of having your heart enlarged (and that can be painful). Quoting Gabriel Marcel: We know we love someone when we glimpse in that person something that is too beautiful to die. From Theresa of Avila: o When you reach the highest level of human maturity, you will have just one question: How can I be helpful o Love is two people sitting in a room, talking to each other. Neither knows what to say, but they recognize each other. Death is the eternal fertility The Good News 9 of God. Why do the Buddhists speak of emptiness in relationship to the concept of God? They do so to refer to God's infinite simplicity, that is, God as God is before all the distinctions made about God. Emptiness is our standing before God s ineffability, utterly overwhelmed by an over-fullness. How can we be helpful in the face of others suffering when we feel so helpless to do anything about it? When persons share their fragility and pain with someone who hears with a true listening, those others uncover inside themselves the pearl of great price. And not least: The generosity of the Infinite is infinite. Among other things, this means that we must give ourselves over to a generous orthodoxy. To be unknown by God is altogether too much privacy. With God, a little sincerity goes a long way. Oblate Father Ron Rolheiser, theologian, teacher, and award-winning author, is President of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX. Addictions, over achievement, procrastination, isolation, over-eating and inability to say no are some examples of behaviors common to trauma survivors. Survivors may know what changes they need to make in order to live happier, more fulfilling lives, but are unable to act on what they know to be healthier choices. This is because they concluded how to keep themselves safe in relationships based on the developmental skills they had at the time they were being hurt. These conclusions then became their life-rules, applied automatically in all situations reminiscent of when they were hurt. If you find yourself stuck in this self-defeating cycle there is hope for healing and recovery. The Diocese of Kalamazoo offers the Trauma Recovery Program for any Catholic adult who is the survivor of childhood abuse or neglect. The program meets for ten sessions in small groups. Each group is facilitated by two mental health professionals and a priest. In this program you will learn why the injuries of abuse and neglect are so profound and learn skills necessary to live a healthier, more satisfying life.

12 Wa i t i ng i n J o y f u l H o p e 12 The Good News Pope clears the way for the canonizations of John Paul II and John XXIII Seminarians trek along the lakeshore to share vocation stories They walked, biked and drove. But whatever the method of transportation the seminarians for the Diocese of Kalamazoo inspired all they encountered with their vocations story. We probably had the opportunity to interact with about 3,000 of the faithful in our diocese, said Rev. Christopher Derda, Vocations Director and pastor, St. Ann Parish, Augusta. Throughout the pilgrimage which traveled to all the parishes in the Lakeshore Deanery, the seminarians participated in a total of seven weekend Masses as well as were welcomed by dinners and receptions along the way. What was truly inspirational was to observe how people reacted to seeing all these normal, ordinary men being called by God to live outside a normal life and do something extraordinary, he added. Another fruit of the pilgrimage according to Fr. Derda was strengthening the fraternity among the seminarians. Someday they are all going to work together and in today s world, in our call to the new evangelization, we really need to know each other to do that. In addition to biking 80 miles and walking 25 (seven of which were along the shore of Lake Michigan) the seminarians had the opportunity to stop at parishes as well as the migrant community. Along each step of the way they prayed, participated in Mass and Adoration and were given the opportunity to share their vocations stories. Another benefit of the pilgrimage that was realized was the additional generous donations to the Seminarian Educational Endowment Fund which was started last year with a grant from Catholic Extension. Fr. Derda s hope is to grow the fund each year. Plans are already underway for next year s summer pilgrimage. At the introduction of our vocations program at the parishes during the pilgrimage, explained Fr. Derda, I told the people, you could be looking at your future pastor some day. God works in mysterious ways. A date for a canonization ceremony is announced formally only during or immediately after the consistory. Father Lombardi also noted Bishop Bradley s meeting with Pope John Paul II: In 1987 while on that no date for a canonization a pilgrimage to Rome with other priests, then Fr. During that memorable encounter Bishop likely that the two popes will be Bradley recalls how impressed he was with the pope s charisma. I was struck by his strength, vitality and warmth.
