1 FORT RIVER SCHOOL AMHERST, MA An inclusive school is a place where everyone belongs, is accepted, supports, and is supported by his or her peers and other members of the school community in the course of having his or her educational needs met. Stainback & Stainback Hello Fort River Families! It feels like this school year is moving at lightning speed! While it is important to be present and enjoy each school day, we must look ahead and start planning for next year! We are especially excited to share how Fort River will implement a co-teaching model next year! We expect to have one co-taught classroom at each grade level next year, in which a classroom and special education teacher will work together for most of the day to plan lessons, deliver instruction, and assess student progress. Our teachers will negotiate their roles to take advantage of their separate areas of expertise. Through co-teaching, teachers expertise will foster masterful differentiation. Carol Ann Tomlinson (2003) writes, Differentiating instruction is meant to maximize each student growth and individual success by meeting each student where he or she is, and assisting in the learning process. Fort River is well positioned to move forward with co-teaching, as our teachers are skilled collaborators and we already have a rich pool of expertise! Along with Crocker Farm and Wildwood, we are currently in the process of hiring three additional special education teachers! Also, district leaders are developing an ongoing professional development series. This Spring we will be offering a workshop for families to learn more about co-teaching and the goals and benefits, led by Dr. Brady, in collaboration with SEPAC. 2 OFF THE SHELF: Dear Fort River Families, Often the library goes through a process called weeding. We have to pull books from our collection to make room for new books and keep the library up-to-date. Books are pulled when they are outdated, in bad shape, or simply never used by our community. Just because we pull them does not mean they will not be appreciated by others. After we offer DISCARDED books to the FR Staff, we put them on a special shelf for the students to take home. Students can keep and enjoy these books, and pass them on. Have a wonderful break from school and READ. Fran Ludington and Joanne Shea *************************************************************************************** Physical Education News Jump Rope for Heart was a huge success here at Fort River! Students made great progress in learning new jump rope skills and ways to keep their hearts happy and healthy. Thank you to all the students and families who raised money to support the American Heart Association! 6 th graders did a PHENOMENAL job during our Immersion Day in February. Students that were in the first PE immersion group researched what different Ancient Civilizations did for Recreation and Games to have fun and pass the time. The students then synthesized what they learned through their research and created some of their own games using the same principals but with a modern twist. 6 th graders then taught their games to groups of students from the entire school. Younger students were a great audience and the 6 th graders were great teachers! Kaileigh Keizer (PE Teacher)

3 Special Education News: As we head into March, MCAS is on the minds of some students and families. The Massachusetts Department of Education provides links to help families familiarize themselves with the format of the tests. This tool allows you to search MCAS items by framework (English Language Arts, Mathematics, History and Social Science, Science and Technology/Engineering), strand and topic. On the day of the test, there are several simple practices that can make the day as easy and relaxed as possible: Get a good night s sleep the night before. Eat a healthy breakfast! Arrive at school on time. If you finish early, review your work. Check over your answers for accuracy if time permits. Have a positive attitude! Joanna Bradbury, Tammy Sullivan-Daley, Karen DeMatteo and Susan Mooring March Technology News: Students have continued to do some amazing work in the computer lab. We are currently working on Ancient Egypt research in 6 th grade. They have chosen either PowerPoint, Windows Movie Maker or Publisher brochures to share what they have learned. Ms Ludington and I have been delighted by their work. We cannot wait to share them! In 5 th grade students have been working hard on their wax museum. Much of the time was spent in the library, but they did do image searches during computer time. They are about to embark on a collaborative project between me and Ms White. Stay tuned! In 4 grade, children are learning the concepts behind animation in Microworlds. They are creating multi-page animated stories! Third graders have continued to enjoy Prodigy Math but are moving into preparing for animal research. They have gone to google images to find animal pictures in preparation for their PowerPoint project they will start after break. Second graders have also enjoyed Prodigy Math but are about to learn some introduction to

4 programming with our PROBOTs. They will program these cars to move to destinations around the room. They will then get the cars to draw different polygons. In 1st grade we are reading digital books in More Starfall and they will soon be introduced to prodigy math. Kindergarteners continue to be such a delight. Teachers are remarking about how wonderfully they listen to instruction in the computer lab! They are always so excited and focused. They have done some literacy work with Bailey s Book House and will be introduced to IPADS after break. I wanted to share my excitement about a new technology initiative for next year. We are going to become a GOOGLE apps for education district. Many teachers are being trained as trainers to prepare both staff and students for this wonderful initiative. You can read more about GAFE Joan Gallinaro, Technology Teacher ******************************************************************* News from the Art Room: Congratulations to our 6th graders who put on a fantastic Ancient Civilizations Immersion Day! Sixth graders acted as tour guides to share their art with one another and with younger students. We turned a bathroom into a cave full of paleolithic cave art from 6th grade and Kindergarten, and we also posted the beautiful Egyptian-style wall paintings by our 6th grade Arts Immersion students. The movement and music immersion students did a great job with their presentations too. I am so proud of all of you!! In our weekly art classes, sixth graders are working on slit-tapestry style weaving projects, a complex variation of weaving skills that they learned as younger students where they can now weave shapes with each color of yarn. Fifth and fourth grades are exploring figure drawing and sculpture inspired by Alberto Giacometti, and we have also been playing Figure Drawing Freeze Dance for inspiration and poses! Third graders will soon begin working dioramas. In addition to researching animals and their habitats, we will also be hearing about the professional field of diorama building and restoration for museums. Recently, the Museum of Natural History in New York City restored its famous dioramas, so we will be watching some short footage of the artists at work painting, sculpting, and dressing the spaces for the museum. Second graders have just completed their Light Catchers to celebrate lantern festivals and festivals of light around the world, and are beginning to work on Matisse-style cutout collages. First grade is finishing up a paper weaving project and will soon move into three-dimensional media and printmaking. Kindergarteners have been getting a fine motor workout as we investigate wall art of

5 various kinds, including paleolithic art and murals, where the students have had the opportunity to draw on the inside of paper "caves" and on "ceilings" on the underside of the tables! Exciting things coming up on the Art calendar: Friday March 13: First Grade Field Trip to see Japanese prints at the Mead Art Museum (Amherst College) - more details to come! Tuesday April 7th: Sixth Grade Field Trip to the Mead Art Museum. Beneski Science Museum and Planetarium - again, more details coming soon! School Psychologists provide direct support and intervention to students; consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals. School Psychologists want to improve support strategies and work with administrators to provide school-wide practices and collaborate with community providers to coordinate services. A day in the life of a School Psychologist.. A day for a School Psychologist might include: Conducting a wide range of assessments including cognitive, academic, and social/emotional evaluations Providing individual and group counseling Observing students in classrooms Managing individual behavior plans Planning appropriate Individualized Education Plans for students with disabilities Communicating with families Consulting with teachers or specialists Implementing school-wide positive behavioral supports Helping students within the classroom

6 Who Are School counselors? School counselors work directly with students in and out of the classroom, providing supports and interventions to students so they are ready for learning. Counselors consult with teachers and other service providers about students; teach whole class lessons; collaborate with school administrators about individual students, school based programming and practices; contact community agencies engaged with students; and communicate with parents/guardians to jointly develop the best supports for students. A day in the life of a School Counselor might include: Checking with students when they first arrive at school to discern how they re doing Meeting with school staff about PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions in School) Teaching a class on relaxation techniques before a test or the Zones to help students understand their feelings and how to be in the just the right place for learning Consulting with a teacher on strategies to help a student focus Assisting a student to engage in their studies when she/he feels overwhelmed or frustrated Helping students with problem solving skills during Lunch Groups Calling parents/guardians about their student Supporting students and their families during crises Connecting with students in class, in counseling or in the hall to develop their selfconfidence and feelings of being valued Ana Encarnacion, Ruth Killough-Hill, Jessica Rudnik, David Rutherford & Dr. Pat Schumm ********************************************************************************************** News from the ELL Team A new student teacher has recently joined our team. Her name is BoKyung Kim, and she works with Ms. Blanca Osorio-Castillo. She is doing the practicum required for the masters degree in Bilingual, ESL and Multicultural Education program at the School of Education at UMASS. We have also recently welcomed newcomers in Grades, K, 2, 3 and 5 from South Korea and China. It is always exciting for us to get new students who are eager to learn English and to share their background knowledge. Classroom, ELL, and Specials teachers work together along with language interpreters to insure that these newcomers feel welcomed and receive instruction they can understand.

7 Technology offers lots of possibilities for accessing comprehensible English both at school and at home. Two free websites that families may enjoy at home are: and Tumblebooks. Tumblebooks can be accessed for free via the Jones Library website. These websites offer animated books that highlight text along with audio output. Intermediate and advanced level ELL students have been working hard in their classrooms to increase their critical thinking and their academic language competencies. Fourth graders recently completed a writing unit using the five paragraph essay structure to write persuasive reviews. In addition to formulating main ideas and supporting details, we looked carefully at sentence structure, transitional phrases and using precise vocabulary. First and second graders are writing informational books that draw from the students background knowledge. An important part of their writing process is to first talk about a topic they know a lot about. We coach them to organize their knowledge into categories during these oral rehearsals for writing. We also draw their attention to various text features that are common to informational texts such as, bold headings, captions, graphs, and glossaries. Students then use some of these text features when writing their own books. The combination of providing visual models, oral reinforcement of the new terms and practical application allows our students to use text features strategically for their reading comprehension and to remember this academic language. Language learning supports concept development and concept development supports language learning. 9 OFF THE SHELF: (FUERA DE LA ESTANTERIA) Queridas Familias de Fort River, A menudo la biblioteca pasa por un proceso llamado weeding o deshierbe. Fran Ludington and Joanne Shea *************************************************************************************** Physical Education News (Noticias de Educación Física) Jump Rope for Heart ( Saltar Cuica para el Corazón ) fue un gran éxito aquí en Fort River! Los estudiantes progresaron grandemente en el aprendizaje de nuevas destrezas para saltar cuica y otras formas de mantener un corazón saludable y contento. Gracias a todos los estudiantes y a las familias que recaudaron dinero para apoyar a la Asociación Americana del Corazón! Los estudiantes de 6 to grado hicieron un trabajo FENOMENAL durante nuestro Día de Inmersión en febrero. Los niños que compusieron el primer grupo de inmersión de EF, investigaron qué hacían las Civilizaciones Antiguas para Recrearse y Jugar, disfrutar y pasar el tiempo. Luego, los estudiantes sintetizaron lo aprendido a través de su investigación y crearon sus propios juegos usando los mismos principios pero con un toque moderno. Los niños de 6 to grado enseñaron sus nuevos juegos a otros grupos de estudiantes de la escuela entera. Los estudiantes más pequeños fueron una gran audiencia y los de 6to unos excelentes maestros! 10 Special Education News (Noticias de Educación Especial): Según nos acercamos al mes de marzo, MCAS está en las mentes de algunos estudiantes y sus familias. El Departamento de Educación de Massachusetts provee links o enlaces para ayudar a las familias a familiarizarse con el formato de los exámenes. Esta herramienta les permite buscar los artículos de MCAS por marco conceptual (Artes del Lenguaje en Inglés, Matemáticas. Historia y Ciencias Sociales, Ciencia y Tecnología/Ingeniería), tema y tópico. Para el día del examen, existen cosas simples que puedes hacer para lograr que ese día sea lo más fácil y relajado posible: Duerme bien la noche anterior. Come un desayuno nutritivo! Llega temprano a la escuela. Si terminas temprano, revisa tu trabajo. Verifica tus respuestas si el tiempo te lo permite. Mantén una actitud positiva! Actualmente estamos trabajando en una investigación sobre el Antiguo Egipto en 6 to grado. Ellos han escogido entre hacer un PowerPoint, Windows Movie Maker o folletos en Publisher para compartir lo que han aprendido. Ms. Ludington y yo estamos encantadas con su trabajo. No podemos esperar para compartirlo! Los estudiantes de 5to grado han estado trabajando en su museo de cera. Pueden leer más sobre GAFE en Joan Gallinaro, Technology Teacher (Maestra de Tecnología) ******************************************************************* News from the Art Room (Noticias desde el salón de Arte): Muchas felicidades a nuestros niños de 6 to grado quienes ofrecieron un fantástico Día de Inmersión con las Civilizaciones Antiguas! Los niños actuaron como guías turísticos para compartir su arte unos con otros y con estudiantes menores que ellos. Convirtieron un baño en una cueva llena de arte paleolítica hecha por 6to grado y Kinder, y también presentaron unas hermosas pinturas de pared estilo egipcio, hechas por los estudiantes de 6to del programa de inmersión de arte. Los estudiantes de inmersión en movimiento y música hicieron un gran trabajo con sus presentaciones también. Estoy muy orgullosa de todos ustedes!! En nuestras clases semanales de arte, los niños de 6 to grado están trabajando en proyectos de tejido al estilo slit-tapestry, una complicada variación de destrezas de tejer que aprendieron cuando más jóvenes y ahora pueden tejer diferentes formas con cada color de lana. Quinto y cuarto grado están explorando el dibujo de figuras y la escultura inspirada en Alberto Giacometti, También han estado jugando Figure Drawing Freeze Dance para conseguir poses e inspiración. Los de tercer grado estarán trabajando pronto con dioramas (representaciones tridimensionales). En adición a la investigación sobre animales y sus hábitats, también escucharemos sobre el campo profesional de la construcción diorama y la restauración de los museos. Recientemente, el Museo de Historia Natural en la ciudad de Nueva York restauró sus famosos dioramas, así que veremos algunos cortometrajes de los artistas pintando, esculpiendo y vistiendo los espacios del museo. Alumnos de segundo grado acabaron de completar sus Light Catchers o colectores de luz para celebrar los festivales de las linternas y los festivales de la luz en todo el mundo y están empezando a trabajar en los collages recortados al estilo Matisse. Primer grado está terminando un proyecto de tejidos de papel y pronto

12 pasarán a los medios de comunicación tridimensionales y el grabado. Su nombre es BoKyung Kim, y trabaja con Ms. Blanca Osorio-Castillo. Ella está haciendo su practicum, requisito para el grado de maestría en el programa Bilingual, ESL and Multicultural Education de la Escuela de Educación de UMASS. 14 La tecnología ofrece muchas posibilidades para acceder a un Ingles comprensible tanto en la escuela como en el hogar. Dos sitios web gratuitos que las familias pueden disfrutar en el hogar son: y Tumblebooks. Tumblebooks se puede acceder de forma gratuita a través de la página web Jones Library. Estos sitios web ofrecen libros animados que resaltan texto junto con salida de audio. Los estudiantes de ELL nivel intermedio y avanzado han estado trabajando duro en sus clases para aumentar su pensamiento crítico y sus competencias lingüísticas académicas. Los estudiantes de cuarto grado completaron recientemente una unidad de escritura utilizando la estructura de ensayo de cinco párrafos para escribir opiniones persuasivas. Además de la formulación de las ideas principales y detalles de apoyo, pusieron atención en la estructura de oraciones, frases de transición y uso del vocabulario preciso.
