But for most Jamaicans going about their daily lives, life can be a constant struggle as they grapple with many economic hardships and challenges. On Sunday August 16, Fr. Gary Wiesman will visit the Cathedral to speak at all the Masses about his missionary work in the Diocese of Mandeville in Jamaica, West Indies. A second collection will be taken up to assist with this important ministry of evangelization. It urges us to heed nature's warnings. And it calls on us to tackle the climate threat in the name of justice, human dignity and service to the poor and most vulnerable among us. Although this encyclical is about facing reality, it is also about hope. It challenges us to dialogue, to action and to live life more fully. It is beautifully written message from our Holy Father. Do not accept mere media snippets, but read it for yourself and take it to heart CATHEDRAL MEN S RETREAT The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will hold its annual Men s Retreat at the Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center in Sierra Madre on Sept. 11, 12, & 13, This annual retreat is a marvelous opportunity for men to gather with fellow parishioners for a weekend of spiritual enrichment and growth. The Passionist retreat team offers inspirational talks, as well as time for quiet prayer, Mass, Confession, and Stations of the Cross. The retreat begins Friday evening with a buffet supper and concludes Sunday after lunch. Suggested donation for the weekend is $215 (including $50.00 deposit). Rest assured that no one is turned away because of financial inability to make the recommended donation. DID YOU KNOW Summertime safety is key for children and parents All teachers, staff and volunteers in the Archdiocese who work with children must undergo fingerprinting and criminal background checks. Last year alone, the Office of Safeguard the Children trained 30,514 adults and 166,850 children in the VIRTUS Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Programs. If your child is participating in summer activities outside of the Archdiocese, make sure you know if the organization or camp performs criminal background and reference checks on their staff.
