2 Imperfecto de los verbos en -ar 1. In Spanish there are two simple past tenses. The preterite tense, which you have already learned, is used to state an action that began and ended at a specific time in the past. The other simple past tense is the imperfect.
3 Imperfecto de los verbos en -ar 2. The imperfect tense is used to describe a habitual or repeated action in the past. The exact times when the action began and ended are not important. 4 Imperfecto de los verbos en -ar Carlos siempre se levantaba temprano. Él tomaba el bus escolar a las siete. El bus llegaba a la escuela a las siete y media. Algunos muchachos caminaban a la escuela. Todos los alumnos entraban en clase a las ocho.

14 Usos del imperfecto In addition to expressing repeated, habitual actions or events in the past, the imperfect is used to describe persons, places, objects, events, weather, and time in the past.
