José necesita una camisa nueva. Who? van a la escuela? Los alumnos van a la escuela. How much? Cuánto cuesta el bolígrafo? El bolígrafo cuesta ocho pesos. When? van ustedes a la tienda? Vamos a la tienda después de las clases. How? What? es Manolo? Manolo es alto, guapo y ambicioso. Where? están los profesores? Los profesores están en la sala. (To) where? van tus hermanos? Mis hermanos van al colegio. Why? regresan los alumnos a casa a pie? Los alumnos regresan a casa a pie porque su casa está cerca de la escuela. A. VERBS APUNTES: PRESENTE DE LOS VERBOS EN AR Words that show action are. In Spanish, verbs belong to families or a type of conjugation. Verbs that have an infinitive (to + verb) that ends in ar are called ar verbs or first conjugation verbs.

COMMON AR VERBS FROM THIS CHAPTER buscar = llevar = comprar = mirar = contestar = navegar = enseñar = necesitar = enviar = pagar = escuchar = regresar = estudiar = sacar = hablar = tomar = levantar = trabajar = C. CONJUGATION OF AR VERBS All Spanish verbs change their endings according to the subject. EXAMPLES hablar = to speak yo habl tú habl él habl ella habl usted habl mirar = to look at Stem: habl- Stem: mir- nosotros habl vosotros habl ellos habl ellas habl ustedes habl D. SUBJECT PRONOUNS In English, it is necessary to use a subject such as I, you, we. However, in Spanish, you can often omit the subject because the verb ending indicates who the subject is.
3 APUNTES: LOS VERBOS IR, DAR, ESTAR A. THREE IRREGULAR VERBS SUBJECT PRONOUNS yo tú él, ella, usted nosotros vosotros ellos(as), ustedes IR (TO GO) DAR (TO GIVE) ESTAR (TO BE) B. EXAMPLES 1. Yo a la escuela en bus escolar. (I go to school by school bus.) Carlos y yo a la tienda después de las clases hoy. (Carlos and I are going to the store after school today.) Tú a la casa de tus abuelos mañana, no? (You re going to your grandparents house tomorrow, aren t you?) 2. El profesor de inglés un examen hoy. (The English teacher is giving a test today.) Yo navego la red y le la información a mi mamá. (I am surfing the net and I m giving the information to my mom.) Nosotros le el dinero al empleado de la tienda.) (We give the money to the salesperson of the store.) 3. Dónde los alumnos?(where are the students?) Paco, Alfredo, cómo? (Paco, Alfredo, how are you?) Mi hermana en el cuarto de baño. (My sister is in the bathroom.) C. USES OF ESTAR 1. You use estar to tell how you feel. Cómo? bien, gracias. 2. You use estar to tell where you are (location). Dónde Rafael? Rafael en la escuela.
4 APUNTES: LAS CONTRACCIONES AL Y DEL A. CONTRACTION AL The preposition a means to or at. A contracts with el to form one word al. A does not contract with la, los or las. EXAMPLES: Juan va cuarto. (Juan is going to the room.) Vamos gimnasio. (We re going to the gym.) BUT: B. PERSONAL A Voy tienda. (I am going to the store.) Ellos van sala. (They are going to the living room.) The preposition a has another important use. When-ever the direct object of a verb is a person, you must put a before it. This a is not translated. It is called the personal a. Observe the following sentences. Miro la televisión. (I am watching television.) Miro amigo de Teresa. (I am watching Teresa s friend.) Escucho la música. (I listen to music.) Escucho la profesora. (I listen to the teacher.) Buscamos un bolígrafo. (We re looking for a pen.) Buscamos nuestros amigos. (We re looking for our friends.) C. CONTRACTION DEL The preposition de means of or from. De contracts with el to form one word del. De does not contract with la, los or las. EXAMPLES: BUT: Es el libro profesor. (It is the teacher s book.) Es la escuela amigo de Pedro. (It is the school of Pedro s friend.) Es el hermano muchacha. (It is the brother of the girl.) Son las carpetas alumnos. (They are the folders of the students.) D. DE WITH OTHER PREPOSITIONS De also forms a part of many other prepositions. EXAMPLES: delante jardín (in front of the garden) cerca carro (near the car) después clases (after school) antes exámenes (before exams) detrás casa (behind the house) lejos tienda (far from the store)
