1 Lesson 39: Infinitive and Gerund After Verbs Lección 39: Infinitivo y el gerundio después de verbos Reading (Lectura) She wants to go to a movie. ( Ella quiere ir a ver una película ) I m planning to work in Canada. ( Estoy planeando trabajar en Canadá ) He enjoys swimming. ( Él disfruta de la natación ) I miss talking to my friends. ( Extraño hablar con mis amigos ) The red car started running. ( El coche rojo empezó a correr ) The red car started to run. ( El coche rojo empezó a correr ) 1
2 She stopped smoking. ( Ella dejó de fumar ) She stopped to smoke. ( Ella dejó de fumar ) Grammar focus (Enfoque gramatical) Algunos verbos son seguidos por infinitivo solamente para describir el objeto de la acción, por ejemplo, want to do something or expect to do something. Estos verbos no pueden ser seguidos por el gerundio. Los siguientes verbos están en esta categoría: querer, esperar, iintentar, decidier, vacilar, desear, esperanza, prometer, planear, ofrecer, acordar, administrar, fingir o pretender, etc. Algunos verbos son seguidos sólo por el gerundio para describir el objeto de la acción, por ejemplo, finish doing something or enjoy doing something. Estos verbos no pueden ir seguidos de infinitivo Los siguientes verbos están en esta categoría: acabar, disfrutar, apreciar, rañar, a ar, a i ir,, evitar, escapar, posponer, permitir, sugerir, etc. Algunos verbos pueden ser seguidos ya sea por el infinitivo o el gerundio para describir el objeto de la acción, por ejemplo, like to do something or like doing something. Los siguientes verbos están en esta categoría: como, amor, empezar, empezar, etc. Por último, algunos verbos pueden ser seguidos por tanto el infinitivo y el gerundio para describir el objeto de la acción, pero el significado es diferente, dependiendo de si se utiliza el gerundio o el infinitivo. Por ejemplo, stop to do something y stop doing something tienen diferentes significados. Los siguientes verbos están en esta categoría: parar, olvidar, recordar, lamentar, etc. 2
