2 miami Welcome to the BJ Training Fund Course Catalog! The Training Fund offers a wide range of excellent basic education programs designed especially for building service workers. These courses are developed with input from building owners and union members to give you the skills you need to succeed. Best of all it is free of charge for eligible members! Education at the 32BJ Training Fund provides a rich opportunity for you to attain your educational and career objectives whether you work in commercial, residential, or public school buildings. Rothschild Secretary The 32BJ Thomas Shortman Training Fund The 32BJ Training Fund is a joint labor-management partnership that offers training to eligible participants at no cost. The fund is supported by contributions negotiated between 32BJ SEIU and participating employers. Our mission is to train every participant to grow to the next level. We want to continually raise the standards of our industry by providing 32BJ members with the tools they need to meet the challenges of a changing industry. Eligibility Eligibility for the Training Fund is fully detailed in the Summary Plan Description (SPD) available online at or by calling Member Services at BJ (3225), Mon Fri, 8am 5pm. Your eligibility depends on the particular collective bargaining agreement or participation agreement covering your employment. Generally, the waiting period for training is 180 days unless otherwise specified in your collective bargaining agreement or participation agreement. If you become ineligible and are out of work for more than 90 days, you will be required to complete the waiting period again. 3 Creating an Environment for Learning Participants who take courses through the 32BJ Training Fund are hardworking people who make a commitment to their personal and professional development. Our Rules & Regulations are distributed at the start of each course. You are expected not only to read the Rules & Regulations, but also to show your fellow students the respect they deserve by abiding by them. Attendance Policy Minimum attendance of 80 percent is required. Course/Seminar Prerequisites Some courses and seminars require you to complete a prerequisite a preparatory course before you enroll. Some courses require minimum reading and math skills. Mastery of these skills can be established by presenting a U.S. high school diploma, or GED, or by passing a standardized test at registration. These prerequisites are noted above the course description if they are required. Emergency School Closings To inquire about the possible cancellation of classes in the event of a weather emergency or other hazardous conditions, contact your site manager for information. 4 miami Courses & Seminars COURSES (indicated in blue) take place over an entire trimester, which is long. The length is indicated under each course title and is shown in the following format:. SEMINARS (indicated in orange) vary in length, ranging from a single session up to nine sessions. The number and length of sessions is indicated W under each seminar title and is shown in the following format: Two 3-hour W sessions. WEEKDAY SESSIONS last 2 3 hours and meet once or twice per week. Study U.S. history and government structure, practice the citizenship interview, and review the questions on the newest version of the citizenship exam. Establish a free account and browse the Internet, including industry, 32BJ and Benefit Funds websites, and shop for building supplies online. Learn about online security precautions, avoiding scams, free anti-spyware and first stage troubleshooting. Computer: Internet Basics/Word Processing (MS Word) Prerequisite: Computer: Basics/New Users (Test Out available) Learn to use search engines effectively, and participate in listservs and blogs. Learn how to keep personal information and computers secure. Create log-in sheets, résumés, fliers, and letters using Microsoft Word and an online word processor, use tables and templates, copy and paste between applications, and organize files. 5 Computer: Spreadsheets (MS Excel) Prerequisite: Computer: Basics/New Users (Test Out available) Enter and format data in an online spreadsheet and in Microsoft Excel. Use formulas and templates to create budgets and invoices and calculate sales tax and mortgage payments. Illustrate data through charts, and study list management, absolute cell references and filtering. www Learn about data types and data validation. English as a Second Language I: The Basics of Conversation and Grammar Master basic conversation skills, pronunciation, and simple sentence structure. This multi-trimester class is designed for beginning English students. Acquire the basic language skills needed to communicate on the job, with schools, and in w the community. Learn to use declarative sentences, with the simple past, present, continuous present, and future tenses. English as a Second Language II: Conversation and Communication Prerequisite: Successful completion of English as a Second Language I, instructor reference, or appropriate score on standardized English as a Second Language test Learn how to converse in work and social situations and write short communications. Discuss workplace-related topics and review readings done both in and out of the classroom. Become more comfortable with spoken and written English.
