2 by Lydia Wolff Build Background Read the title to children and talk with them about the brother and sister in the cover photo. Ask them what they think they will learn about brothers and sisters in this book. Introduce the Text Guide the children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features such as the repetition of the words Nosotros/Nosotras, that tell what brothers and sisters do together. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this book brothers and sisters tell what they do together. Page 3: Remind children to use information in the photos to help them read. Vayan a la página 3. Qué dicen que hacen las hermanas? Dicen: Nosotras saltamos. Words to Know Have children turn to the Palabras que quiero saber at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. Tell children to look for these words as they read. Words to Know yo 2

3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the story, or what they found interesting. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Sisters and brothers can read, jump, ride, and run together. Sisters and brothers can hug each other, too. It s fun to do different things with your brother or sister. It s important to spend time with your brother or sister. The photos show sisters and brothers doing different activities together. The author uses almost the same, simple language on each page. The author feels that sisters and brothers doing activities together is important Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors such as reading from left to right and pointing under each word. Say pairs of words, for example: leemos, hacemos; leemos, leer; bicicleta, camioneta; bicicleta, bandera; hermano, enano; hermano, esto; abrazamos, montamos; abrazamos, abrir. Build Words Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards or blocks. Work with children to build words that have the same vowel sound as yo.
