Explain that this book gives information about some famous places around the world. The author includes the addresses of these places. Activate or Build Background Explain that an address lists the street, town, state, and (in some cases) the country and ZIP or postal code where a place is located. Provide children with an example of an address, such as where your school is located, or call on volunteers to state their own addresses. Then ask children why it might be important for someone to know a person s address. Display a piece of mail you have received. Point out your name and address. Nonfiction Text Features Map: Point out the world map on page 2. Explain that the map shows the countries where the places in the book are located. Leader lines run from the photographs to the exact locations on the map where the places are found. Labels: Draw attention to the labels on page 2, and read them aloud. Explain that the labels name the locations of the places shown in the photographs. Index: Turn to page 16. Explain that an index helps readers find specific information in the book. It has topics listed in alphabetical order. Page numbers show where in the book information about those topics can be found. Introduce Vocabulary You may want to introduce the following words before reading: dirección: dónde se encuentra un lugar lugares: áreas determinadas encontrar: hallar Preview and Predict Turn to page 2 and read aloud the main text and labels.
Use Picture Clues; Understand Context Clues Turn to pages 2 and 3 and guide children in tracking the print as you read aloud the main text. Compare and Contrast; Hypothesize Direct children s attention to the small photographs at the top of page 1. Identify Text Organization and Structure; Compare and Contrast Imagina que estuvieras visitando Australia.
ESL/ELL Strategy Help children understand the meaning of the word located by asking a volunteer to tell the class his or her country of origin. Point out the country on a world map and say: This is [name of country]. It is located in [name of continent]. Repeat the process several times with other country/continent pairs. Reread the Book After children reread the text, help them identify the parts of an address by completing the graphic organizer on the back cover together. Discuss the text structure of the book. Answers to Student Book Questions 1. 3. Las respuestas variarán.
5 3 Learn Through the Text SOCIAL STUDIES: Addresses in a Neighborhood Explain to children that a neighborhood is a place where people live and work. Ask them to brainstorm some of the different kinds of buildings and places that can be found in a neighborhood. Point out that places in the same neighborhood usually have addresses that are alike in some ways and different in other ways. You may want to assist children by writing the addresses of several places in your school s neighborhood on the chalkboard. Discuss with children what might happen if places in the same neighborhood had the same address. COMPREHENSION: Use Graphic Sources Point out that the information found in a book doesn t necessarily have to come from the words. Photographs and pictures can provide information as well. Turn to page 6. Turn to page 14, and reread aloud the text. WRITING Write an Informational Text Have children use what they have learned about informational text to write about their homes. Have children fold a large sheet of drawing paper in half. On the left side of the paper, ask them to draw where they live. Have them add labels or sentences to describe their home. On the right side of the paper, have children copy this sentence: Ésta es la dirección de mi casa. Then work with them to write their address below the sentence. When children have finished, set aside time for them to share their work with the class by reading their papers from an Author s Chair.
