1 Guided Practice Activities 8A-1 The present subjunctive (p. 410) Use the subjunctive to say that one person influences the actions of another: Nosotros recomendamos que ustedes hablen con la empleada. We recommend that you speak with the employee. A sentence in the subjunctive has two parts, each with a different subject. The word que comes between the two parts. The first part uses the present indicative to recommend, suggest, prohibit, and so on. The second part uses the present subjunctive verb to say what the other person or people should or should not do, or what should or should not happen. Nosotros recomendamos que ustedes hablen con un agente de viajes. We recommend that you speak with a travel agent. A. Read the following sentences, paying attention to the underlined part. Write PI (for Present Indicative) or PS (for Present Subjunctive) to identify the underlined part. The first one is done for you. 1. Isabel quiere que nosotros estemos listos para abordar. PS 2. Yo deseo que tú no registres las maletas. 3. Yo quiero que usted compre los boletos. 4. Ellos insisten en que yo lleve el pasaporte. 5. Ella no permite que yo facture las maletas. 6. 2 Guided Practice Activities 8A-2 The present subjunctive (continued) Some verbs that are often followed by que subjunctive are: decir preferir (e ie) insistir en querer (e ie) necesitar recomendar (e ie) permitir sugerir (e ie) prohibir La empleada no permite que entres sin el pasaporte. The employee does not allow you to enter without a passport. You form the present subjunctive in the same way as you form negative tú commands and usted/ustedes commands. You drop the -o of the present-tense indicative yo form and add the present subjunctive endings.
