Present continuous or Progressive Presente continuo o Presente progresivo por Blanca Rosa González El Presente Continuo se utiliza en tres ocasiones: 1) Para expresar algo que sucede en el momento que hablamos; 2) Para expresar algo que está sucediendo actualmente, pero no exactamente en el momento en que está sucediendo; y 3) Para comunicar una actividad que se tiene considerada realizar en el futuro cercano. We use the Present Continuous tense in 3 forms: 1) To express that something is happening at the moment someone is speaking; 2) To express that something is happening today but not exactly in the time is happening; and finally 3) To communicate an activity that you are considering to do on the near future. Para formar el presente continuo también llamado presente progresivo, se debe utilizar alguna de las tres formas del verbo to be de acuerdo al pronombre personal que le corresponde, seguido del verbo en forma básica pero con terminación _ing. am is verb _ing are Tabla 1. Verbo to be (Soars &Soars, 2001, p. 140). Usos Uses El Presente Continuo o Progresivo se usa para expresar lo siguiente: 1
An activity happening now, (Soars et al., 2001, p. 140). Una actividad que está sucediendo ahora. They are running in the park. Ellos están corriendo en el parque. Figura 1. She is cleaning the house Ella está limpiando la casa. Figura 2. An activity happening around now, but perhaps not at the moment of speaking, (Soars, 2001, p. 140). Una actividad que está sucediendo alrededor de este momento, pero tal vez no exactamente en el momento en que estamos hablando. He is learning a new song at school. El está aprendiendo una nueva canción en la escuela. Figura 3. 2
She is feeding her pet. Ella está alimentando a su mascota. Figura 4. A planned future arrangement, (Soars, 2001, p. 140). Una actividad que se acuerda o planea llevarse a cabo en el futuro cercano. I m singing tomorrow at the concert. Yo estaré cantando mañana en el concierto. Figura 5. What is she doing this afternoon? Qué estará haciendo ella esta tarde? Figura 6. Oraciones afirmativas Afirmative sentences La estructura para formar oraciones afirmativas es la siguiente: 3
Personal Pronouns Verb to be Verb ing I am He She It is listening cleaning paying We You They are Tabla 2. Presente continuo- oraciones afirmativas (Soars, L &Soars, J. 2001, p. 140) Oraciones negativas Negative sentences La estructura para formar oraciones negativas es la siguiente: Personal Pronouns Verb to be Verb ing I am not = m not He She It is not = isn t listening cleaning paying We You They are not = aren t Tabla 3. Presente continuo- oraciones negativas (Soars, L &Soars, J. 2001, p. 140) 4
Preguntas cortas Yes / No Questions La estructura para formar preguntar cortas es el siguiente: Observa que se debe iniciar con el verbo to be y terminar con el signo de interrogación. Verb to be Personal Pronouns Verb ing Am I Is He She It listening? cleaning? paying? Are We You They Tabla 4. Presente continuo- oraciones interrogativas (Soars, L &Soars, J. 2001, p. 140) La estructura para formar preguntas que se muestra en la tabla anterior se llama preguntas de respuesta sí o no. También es posible formar una pregunta iniciando con las famosas Question words, al utilizarlas, se orman preguntas que buscan obtener información más completa respecto a algo y no únicamente una espuesta si ó no. What is she listening? Where is he cleaning? Why are they paying? Qué esta ella escuchando? Dónde está él limpiando? Por qué están ellos pagando? 5
Respuestas cortas Short answers Por último se presenta la forma corta de contestar en afirmativo y negativo. Observa que esta respuesta corta sólo se usa al contestar las Yes/No Questions. Yes, I am He is She is It is We are You are They are No, I m not He isn t She isn t It isn t We aren t You aren t They aren t Tabla 5.
She is lying to her boss. Ella está mintiendo a su jefe. The boy is tying his shoes. El niño está amarrando sus zapatos. If a verb ends in _e, we leave out e before the ending _ing, (Murphy, R p. 281). Si el verbo termina en _e, se quita la _e y solo se agrega la terminación _ing. Base forma smile, sonreir dance, bailar confuse, confundir Verb_ing smiling dancing confusing Tabla 7. Verbos con terminación e parte 1 (Murphy, R pág. 281) I am hoping to find my money. Yo estoy deseando encontrar mi dinero. She is smiling to her boyfriend. Ella está sonriendo a su novio. Exceptions to this rule: Base forma be, ser, estar see, ver agree, concordar, estar de acuerdo Verb_ing being seeing agreeing Tabla 8. Excepciones (Murphy, R pág. 281). 7
She is seeing a new doctor. Ella está viendo un nuevo doctor. The students are agreeing with their teacher. Los estudiantes están concordando con el maestro. Sometimes a verb ends in vowel + consonant. We need to double the consonant at the end and add _ing. Algunas veces el verbo termina en vocal seguido de consonante. Tenemos que repetir la consonante y agregar _ing. Base forma swim, nadar get, obtener stop, detener plan, planear Verb_ing swimming getting stopping planning Tabla 9. Verbos con doble consonante (Murphy, R pág. 281). The children are getting their present. Los niños están recibiendo su regalo. He is stopping the fight. El está deteniendo la pelea.
