As a staff we strive to work in partnership with our BHS families to foster the achievement of all of our students. Clear communication is essential to our work together. This packet contains important information about the opening of the school year. At BHS, student registration is completed during Beaver Day. At Beaver Day, students have their school pictures taken, receive their official class schedule, pay fees, purchase a yearbook, purchase Beaver spirit gear, sign up for lockers, meet with a counselor if necessary, and sign up for clubs and activities. A Beaver Day checklist is included for your convenience. Each student is encouraged to attend the appropriate grade-level session in the BHS Cafeteria following the schedule below (transportation is not provided). Students are welcome to leave when their registration is completed. Session dates and times are: Thursday, August 21: Seniors 8:00-9:30 a.m. Juniors 9:30 11:00 a.m. Sophomores 12:00-1:30 p.m. Freshmen 1:30-3:00 p.m. Please note the following information: First day for Freshmen only Tuesday, September 2 from 7:45 a.m. 2:30 p.m. Bus schedules will be available at Beaver Day. First day of school for all students Wednesday, September 3 from 7:45 2:30 p.m. Students unable to attend Beaver Day will be able to pick up their official schedules in the cafeteria in the morning on this day. Purchase of school insurance is by direct payment to the insurance company. It will not be handled through registration or Beaver Day. 9 Student Activities Program Students who are involved in activities outside of the classroom tend to be more successful academically. Involvement in activities creates wonderful experiences and the opportunity to form friendships that shape the high school experience. Beaverton High School is proud of our Activities Program. We offer a wide variety of activities and programs that give every student the opportunity to find a way to actively engage in the BHS community. There are over 40 clubs for students to participate in all year. Student voice and input is included on numerous school committees. The BHS eadership program offers an excellent opportunity to get involved. Take a look at the list of activities included in this packet and find a way to get involved. In addition to activities, several key traditional events enliven the year. BHS Student Leadership is already busy working hard to put together events like Homecoming, Assemblies, Spirit Weeks, several dances and spirit activities. These events add to the high school experience. One way to show your BHS spirit is to wear our colors. EVERY FRIDAY WE WEAR ORANGE AND BLACK!!! Our students are the reason that BHS is one of the best high schools in the state. We encourage EVERY student to find a way to take part. So, look through the information provided. 13 Athletics Program: Key Information Beaverton High School has a rich tradition of excellence in athletics and activities. Research shows that students who are involved in after- school activities, achieve higher academic success and form a stronger bond with their school community. So, whether it is running on the football field, singing in the musical, or being part of the band, every student is encouraged to get involved. GENERAL INFORMATION If you are interested in participating in athletics you will need to complete the following forms prior to participation. These forms can be found on the Beaverton High School Website, MetroLeague.org, BHS Main Office, or the Athletic Office, Room 206 (Athletic Office opens Aug. 11, 2014). 1. Participation Form - Shows Insurance and receives parents permission to participate. Athletic Participation Forms/White Activity Forms/Pink 2. State Physical Form - Good for two years. Doctor and Parent/Guardian must sign this form. 3. $225 payment for all Athletics - If placed on a team. Activities Participation Fee is $85 Students with financial need may contact the Athletic Office. OSAA ACADEMICS: Athletic and Activities: In order to participate in sports, all athletes must meet Oregon School Athletics and Activities Association (OSAA) and Beaverton School District Athletic/Activity Grade standards. Grade checks will occur at the beginning of each season and once during the season. Incoming freshmen are automatically granted eligibility at the beginning of fall season. They must, however, meet both standards during the rest of their high school career. The two standards are: 1. State Rules Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA): a. The OSAA grade checks are done at the beginning of each sport/activity season. Athletes must have passed 5 classes from the previous semester. (2.5 Credits) Athletes must maintain 5 classes or more during the season. (2.5 Credits) This also applies to participants in activities. b. Athletes must also be making satisfactory progress toward the school's graduation requirements. (4 Credits by Soph Credits by JR - 16 credits by SR.) NOTE: A student should be averaging 6 credits a year to reach current school graduation requirements. 2. Beaverton School District Grade Requirements: (CURRENTLY UNDER DISTRICT REVIEW) During the season we will do grade checks based on the BSD standards. At the time of the check, students must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and no F's in any classes. Failure to meet these standards will result in student ineligibility for game/event participation. Upon meeting the standard and teacher notification, the athletic director may allow reinstatement. (Special Education students may also be evaluated on their IEP progress.)

19 Beaverton High School Volunteer The Volunteer Committee Coordinator and Committee Chairs work with Beaverton High Staff to organize volunteers for school-wide activities. All are invited to attend our meetings. It's a great way to stay connected to what is going on around the school! 20 . Located on the Beaverton High School campus, the School-Based Health Center (SBHC) is a health-care facility that is affordable and eliminates the need for transportation for many families. It also provides access to healthcare to those students who may not otherwise get the care they need. It means students miss less class time, and parents miss less work time! Keeping students healthy and in the classroom results in fewer absences and higher grades. Although the health center is located on the Beaverton High School campus, it is not run by the school or the school district. Grants from the federal government, State of Oregon, Kaiser Community Foundation at Northwest Health Foundation, PacificSource Charitable Foundation, Tuality Healthcare and others have provided the funding for the health center s initial start up costs. Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center operates the health center. Professional Medical Care The SBHC is a healthcare facility similar to a doctor s office. It is staffed with a licensed medical providers from Virginia Garcia who provide comprehensive physical, mental, and preventive health services including physical exams, treatment of minor injury and illness, lab tests, immunizations, and mental health counseling and more. The health center will also be providing dental services soon. The staff coordinates with family doctors to provide the most effective medical care. Prevention and Education Through school-wide education initiatives, the SBHC promotes healthy lifestyle choices and teaches students how to take responsibility for their health and well-being. Its prevention- focused messaging aims to catch health problems and risky behaviors before they start. It encourages parent involvement to support successful health outcomes. Make an appointment! Appointments are recommended, however urgent health concerns are seen on a walk-in basis. Before their first visit, it is recommended that students fill out the SBHC Registration Form, which can be picked up at your school front office. Call for more information. 21 Why a School-Based Health Center Adolescents are often reported to have the lowest access to health care of any age group, and they are the least likely to seek care through traditional office-based settings. To serve this group, Washington County has partnered with Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center and LifeWorksNW to provide a quality healthcare facility right on the Beaverton High School campus. The health center is open when school is in session. It is designed to ease access to healthcare for all students and staff, regardless of their ability to pay, by reducing the inconvenience, cost, and the need for transportation. The SBHC provides comprehensive physical, mental, and preventative health services such as: Routine physical exams; sports physicals & concussion clinics Mental health and substance abuse assessments and referrals Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness Immunizations, prescription medications, and lab tests Treatment of minor illness and injury Vision, dental, and blood pressure screenings Mental health counseling Q&A Who operates the health center? Washington County has a partnership with Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center who operates the SBHC and LifeWorksNW who provides a licensed mental health counselor. What about insurance? The SBHC can bill most private insurance carriers. It is required that you pay your insurance co-pay at the time of your visit. If you do not have insurance, the medical office assistant will work with you to make your visit affordable. They can assess whether You re eligible for the Oregon Health Plan (OHP) and provide you with an application. If you are not eligible for OHP, your family s income will be used to determine whether you are eligible for a discounted fee. Families that earn less money will pay less. Who is a family nurse practitioner? A family nurse practitioner can assess, diagnose, provide treatment, and prescribe medication. The SBHC nurse practitioner has experience and training in issues specific to adolescent health. Who is a mental health counselor? A child and family therapist is a mental health professional who is trained and licensed to provide treatment and Counseling for mental health issues. The SBHC child and family therapist is also dual-certified to provide drug and alcohol abuse assessment and treatment. Where is the health center located?
