1 BULLDOG PRIDE BOULDER CREEK BOULDER CREEK NEWSLETTER/AUGUST 2013 Principally Speaking Dear Parents: Welcome back to fabulous year fourteen! I am so excited for another great school year. In reflecting about what this first article should be about I found a great article on tips about how parents can help out with schoolwork so I have included some ideas from the article: 1. When your child asks for help on an assignment (and sometimes as parents we end up doing the work) try pointing them to specific resources i.e. the specific chapter in the book or a particular site on the Internet. 2. If I am a little rusty on a particular subject (i.e. the common core state standards), the directions in the textbook are usually very helpful but if that doesn t do the trick web sites like homeworkspot.com and khanacademy.com can also help out. 3. If your child frequently surprises you with a major project on Sunday night that is due on Monday morning, begin now by teaching him or her how to prioritize by tearing apart a calendar and placing the months on his or her wall so it can be seen all at once. Teach your child to write the dates things are due on the calendar. 4. If your child hates doing homework, try to establish a consistent routine. Work together on a schedule that incorporates some down time (i.e. half hour) and then have your child estimate how long it will take to complete the night s homework. Working together will help him or her stay on track and build important time management skills. 5. How do you help all your kids in different grades at the same time? Coach the bigger ones separately. Younger kids might cooperate with older kids more readily than their parents. Set up a quiet area like the kitchen. When each child finishes, have him or her leave to play in a room out of earshot. Some studies suggest that giving students more than 10 minutes of homework per grade per night (starting in fourth) doesn t raise their grades. If your child is facing much more than that amount and seems frustrated or exhausted by the homework load, check if the teacher can modify the amount of work he/she assigns or offer resources you can tap. Continued on next page. Early Release 8/21 and 2:15pm SPIRIT DAY WEDNESDAY, AUG 28TH NEON DAY - WEAR YOUR FAVORITE NEON COLOR Gilbert Public Schools Our Mission: Ensure exemplary education that inspires excellence and success within every learner.
2 Principally Speaking continued Be careful with this one because I will sometimes hear that my child is doing many hours of homework a night. After further exploring I find that it isn t sit down, and do four hours of homework, it is often a focusing problem. The child will wok for ten minutes and then lose focus and do something else for 30 minutes so the parent thinks that the child has four hours of homework when it is actually a small amount of work but a lot of loss of focus. Learn when to seek outside help: Sincerely, - Your child has occasional trouble with tough subjects but benefits from taking a break or getting some help from you. Deal with this on your own. - Your child spends too much time on basic assignments or seems to be encountering concepts for the first time at home. Talk to the teacher. - The first chat with the principal is September 3 rd at 8:00 in the library. I hope to see a lot of you there. Karen K. Coleman WELCOME! 4 A Note from the Nurse s Office Welcome back Bulldogs to another fun and exciting year here at Boulder Creek. Here are a few things to keep in mind for this year. August 23rd is the final deadline for immunization records to be turn in to the health office for those who received letters of inadequate immunization. As required by state law, students who are not fully immunized will not be able to attend school starting the 23 rd.if you have not turned in updated records please do so as soon as possible. Tdap and Meningococcal are required or those in 6 th grade and 11 years old. If you have questions regarding shots please call the health office. These requirements are in place to help keep your children healthy. Parents, if your child has already had the vaccines please forward a copy of the verified record to the health office. If not, there are various clinics available or you can make an appointment with your family physician. A list of clinics was attached to the notices sent home. Gilbert Schools has a strict policy when it comes to medications. Students are not allowed to carry medications on their person, or in backpacks. All medications, prescribed and over the counter i.e. vitamins, Tylenol, and tums to name a few, need to come through the health office and brought in by a parent/responsible adult. If the medication is for life threatening conditions it still needs to be checked in with the health office. Please do not send medications with your child to school. If your child needs to take medication at school, please contact the health office. This policy is for the safety of all students. Safety is a priority for all students. With school starting in early August, students love to wear flip-flops to school. Please keep in mind that feet and ankles are vulnerable to injury through scrapes and twists while wearing flip-flops. Research also shows wearing flip flops can lead to foot problems later due to the lack of support. Do not let your child wear flip-flops to school. Flip flops, even new ones break very easily. Parents will be called to bring another pair of shoes for your child if their flip flop breaks. Through out the year students have accidents, find mud or need a change of clothes for any number of reasons. I try to have clothes available for these untimely accidents. If your child needs to borrow a change of clothes, please wash the items borrowed and return them as soon as possible. If you know your child is prone to accidents, it helps your child if you send a change in his/her. Vision and hearing screening will start by the end of August or beginning of September. Please make sure your student wears their glasses every day. Good vision is important for your child s success in school. Any one who fails the vision or hearing screen will be re-screened a second time before referrals are sent home. Please keep this in mind should you get a referral. A quick response to referrals addresses potential problems early in the school year. If you have any questions regarding immunizations, medications, screenings or have any updates on your child's medical or health needs please call the health office. Healthy kids are my business. Have a great year. Jane Xavier RN PTSO NEWS We are eagerly seeking parents and teachers to support our school and children for the school year. Join our page on Facebook.
