6 Elliott-Chelsea NORC News The NORC welcomes our new Social Worker, Natalie Valdez. Natalie brings her experience and calm demeanor to the position. She speaks Spanish and will be co-facilitating (with Patrice) our regular Life in the 21st Century group on Fridays from 11:30 am to 1 pm. We are very happy to have Quanisha Adams joining us as our Administrative Manager and wish Rayfi Lopez a fond farewell. Quanisha previously worked for Hudson Guild in another department and is currently earning her Masters in Social Work at Fordham University. She will be replacing Rayfi Lopez, who has been promoted to a full time position in our Neighborhood Senior Center located at Fulton Center. We wish Rayfi all the best in his new position and welcome Quanisha! Our NORC nurse, Elizabeth, will be offering FREE blood pressure screenings on Thursday mornings from 10 am to 11 am. Her regular hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm so please stop by or call to make an appointment. We are able to offer blood pressure screenings both in the NORC office and in your home, so call us today! 8 Saturday, December 13, 2014 HOLIDAY BAZAAR Chef s Corner with Andrew Martinez (Guest Writer: Kara Styles) Aging and Bone Health Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because you don t usually notice any symptoms until you break a bone. It can happen at any age but it most often affects adults 50 years and better. While women are at a greater risk, men are not immune to developing this disease. Up to one in four men over age 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. To maintain strong and healthy bones as we age it is important to eat foods that support bone health. Calcium isn t the only nutrient we need. Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Potassium, Fluoride and Magnesium are all important for building and maintaining strong bones. When people think of bone health and calcium they often think of milk and dairy foods but there are many other healthy foods that provide the calcium (and other nutrients!) our bodies need to support bone health as we age. 9 Par ticipant Spotlight: Luther TARI Stubblefield Luther TARI Stubblefield was raised in Detroit, Michigan. In his teen years he worked with groups like the Temptations, The Supremes, Freda Payne and the Four Tops. This was in the 50s before Motown was developed. He was a Dancer, Choreographer and Costume Designer. They worked yearly at the State Fairs and local Night Clubs. Tari relocated to NYC in 1962 where he received a dance scholarship to Julliard; there he studied the style of Martha Graham and Jose Limon. His plans were to create costumes or set designs for B way and Off B way. Soon I found there was no acceptance for Afro-Americans in these positions in the 60s & 70s, not backstage or even onstage. Therefore, I freelanced as a costume designer. He took a course at Fashion Institute of Technology while working in the Garment World to pay the rent.. Tari worked for Betsy Johnson and Diana Dew for the Paraphanella Stores and other manufacturers. In the 60s he was an advocate for the Civil Rights Movement and against the Vietnam War. In 1995, Tari moved to the NYCHA Baruch Houses on the Lower East Side (LES.) There he joined Community Board #3 on the advisory board for the development of the East River Water Front. He became a member of GOLES (Good Old Lower East Side) fighting for environmental rights, housing and a resolution for the area s rat problems. In 1996, he started a garden named A Magical Garden at Baruch where he won the Second Award in 1997 for Manhattan from the NYCHA City Wide Grow Together Program and, in 1999, the First Award. Tari has received Awards of Appreciation from every elected official and PSA #4 in District #3. Tari s most valued Award of Appreciation is from The White House with a separate letter from President Obama. In spring 2012, Tari moved A Magical Garden Two to Fulton Houses. The Garden received the Second Place award in 2013 and First Place for Manhattan in He was also awarded Community Organizer for Manhattan Tari looks forward to working with Miguel Acevedo, President of the Fulton Houses Tenants Association. You may see Tari around for lunch, theatre and travel events here at Hudson Guild.
