1 THREE VOICES T RIV OCIS STUDENTS, PARENTS, FACULTY MAY 2015 MENLO-ATHERTON HIGH SCHOOL VOLUME 62, NUMBER MIDDLEFIELD ROAD, ATHERTON, CA (650) To the Menlo-Atherton Community We are pleased to share the great things that are happening at M-A as the fourth quarter has begun. Our long awaited Spring Break is on the horizon! March and April have been busy with many accomplishments and a tremendous number of activities. Teen Sleep in Action Our teen sleep program is in motion. At the end of February, Stanford students presented to all of our 9 th grade students in World Studies classes the importance of sleep. We sponsored a slogan contest to promote better sleep among teens, and 9 th grade student Zoe Schacter-Brodie was the winner with her slogan, Life is lousy when you re drowsy. Congratulations to Zoe! Furthermore, in early March our junior teen sleep ambassadors visited the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center and were interviewed by KGO-TV (channel 7) during their field trip. One of the ambassadors was connected to EEG electrodes, which monitored her brain wave activity for everyone to see. The segment aired on KGO on April 7 in the evening newscast. The ambassadors also created a flyer on drowsy driving, which has been shared on School Loop and posted in the front office. Thanks to Maggie Betsock, tireless volunteer, for her work on coordinating all of the sleep activities. Carnegie Hall Apperance On Saturday, April 4, the Menlo-Atherton Orchestra, led by music teacher Kent Kurrus, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at New York City s Carnegie Hall the most celebrated concert hall in the nation with the best of the best high school bands and orchestras from around the country and Canada. Earned by winning the Festival of Gold competition in Chicago last spring, the Orchestra was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall. All 51 students had the thrill of flying to New York (along with many parents, families, and friends) for this experience. The orchestra rose to the occasion, playing three pieces magnificently in front of an enthusiastic audience whose goosebumps, tears, and applause celebrated the M-A stars. Many of the world's top musicians never have the opportunity to play in Carnegie Hall; for our M-A orchestra not only to win the opportunity, but to turn in a flawless performance, was a thrill. If you see members of the orchestra and Mr. Kurrus, congratulate them heartily.

In its final offering of the season, the M-A Parent Education Series offers Helping Young Athletes Reach Their Potential: What Does Research Tell us? with Steve Smith, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and professor in the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium of Palo Alto University. How can parents support their children toward healthy participation in sports to facilitate a lifelong healthy lifestyle and to reach their potential? The balance between sports, academics, arts, and downtime can be challenging as families work to find what experiences will best prepare their children for the future. In this workshop, Dr. Smith reviews current research (including his own original studies) and provides guidelines for parents and coaches to consider for healthy sport participation. Prior to joining the faculty at Palo Alto University, Steve Smith served as the consulting psychologist for the Division I Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at UC Santa Barbara. He maintains a private practice, Sport Psychology and Research Center ( where he works with school, club, and professional teams and athletes of all ages from across the nation. Helping Young Athletes Reach Their Potential: What Does Research Tell Us? with Steve Smith, Ph.D., Palo Alto University Thursday, May 7, :00-8:30 pm, M-A PAC Cafe M-A Parent Education Series events are free and sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.
