Miami International Mall Honors Six 'Hispanic Stars' at Hispanic Heritage Celebration Posted By Community Newspapers On October 27, 7:00 pm In Dora!. I No Comments Miami International Mall honored six individuals with the Hispanic Star Award for their selfless contributions to their community and tireless work on important community projects in South Florida. This year the Hispanic Star Award consisted of 6 categories, Hispanic Educator, Hispanic Health Professional, Hispanic Philanthropist, Hispanic Junior Community Leader, Hispanic Small Business Leader, and Hispanic Artist. This year recipients included Dr. Jose A. Vicente, Daisy J. Baez, Frank Bolanos, Anthony Correa, John Fredy Moncada and Adriana Catano. Each individual was nominated by the community. Each honoree was recognized in front of local dignitaries, community leaders, prominent media, family and friends through a spectacular runway fashion show at the Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Dr. Jose A. Vicente,North and West Campus President at Miami Dade College, was honored as Hispanic Educator. As president of the North Campus, he helped improve the facility and advance education though the development of North's School of Justice building, a firefighter Training facility, the MDC-TV cable channel, International Sculpture Park and recording studios, and Pre-School Lab, a state of the art Science Complex. Vicente was also instrumental in launching baccalaureate degree programs in education/teaching, law enforcement and public safety, entertainment & design technology, and science. He is the first Hispanic in the State of Florida to be selected as a Fellow of the American Council on Education (ACE). Vicente has also served on the Board of the American Association of Community Colleges and cochaired the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Leadership Group. Daisy J. Baez was honored as Hispanic Health Professional. Focused on uniting the community through education, community activism, and fundraising, Baez is recognized as a strong and professional leader in the community. As a social worker, health administrator, and health care executive, she is a strong advocate for the needs of Latinos. Baez is the Founder & Executive Director of the Dominican Health Care Association of Florida, the Founder and COO of Consulting Management Solutions, and the Former VP of Larkin Community and Metropolitan Hospital. She is also the current President of the Hispanic Caucus, Miami Dade Chapter, which is dedicated to voicing and advancing issues affecting Hispanics and Latinos in the United States and Puerto Rico. Frank Bolanos was named Hispanic Philanthropist for his active role in helping the community. He has made in difference in the lives of students, parents, and teachers in the community. Bolanos has supported critical education, business, technology, and ethics reforms in the nation's fourth largest school system. ART OF WORDS Miami Dad e College's,Galleries of Art + Design will present "The SWEAT Broadsheet Collaboration," a project organized by a,group of South Florida artists and writers, from Friday to Dec. 21 at the Wolfson Campus Centre Gallery. An opening reception will be held 6 p.m. Thursday.. Nearly four years in the making, the exhibition features 46 artists, 40. writers and includes 78 broadsheets (fme art prints created in a wide variety of media), fea~ turing letterpress, silk- ' screen, etching, digital pigment prints, relief prints, monoprints andmany forms of hand work such as hand coloring; hand-cut paper and applique on fabric. On Nov. 17 a related reading and discussion will be presented in conjunction with the college's Miami Book Fair International. Former Miami Herald journalist, and now filmmaker Oscar Corral spent five years following renowned author Tom Wolfe around Miami to learn directly from him how he approaches creating real life on the page. Oscar Corral's documentary "Tom Wolfe Gets Back to Blood" focuses on how Wolfe brings Miami to life. "Tom Wolfe Gets Back to Blood" is a 57-minute independent film that covers the five years Wolfe spent in Miami researching his new novel "Back to Blood." The film shows footage of Wolfe meeting with sources, traveling around Miami, and him actively trying to figure out the inner workings of how our very own Miami ticks. Nov. 6 is the most important day of the year for America - it is the day we vote to elect our next president; it is the day that we, as Americans, get a chance to determine who we want to be in charge of our country for the next four years. As American citizens, we get to pick our leader through the ballot box, a responsibility that we are lucky to have and one that we should all treasure. We must take advantage of the opportunity. According to Census Bureau data, 131 million people participated in the 2008 Presidential Election; that's out of 146 million registered voters and of 206 million Americans who are of voting age. Those who are registered and otherwise eligible to vote, but who don't, are either tuned out or turned off, sick or just too busy. And that's a shame. Voting is a right and a privilege. It's hard to predict how that 208 presidential election would have changed if those who were eligible had voted. Perhaps John McCain might be running for re-election today; then again, perhaps not. No doubt the negativity of campaigning keeps many voters away from the polls, and that is a concern th is year. Many states have been working to make the voting process more convenient and less burdensome for voters. But these reforms have come under attack throughout the nation, which may mean that many voters in 2012 will find it more difficult to cast their ballot. And, while it is important that you vote, it is equally important to be educated on the issues that you will cast your ballot on. This year's ballot is long and complicated, so please get a sample ballot and study it carefully in advance. There are 10 proposed amendments to the State Constitution and a dozen proposed amendments to the Miami- Dade County Charter. Wollmann is deeply concerned about such major issues as FPL's plans to run high-power lines down the US 1 corridor, the county plan to expand the current US-1 busway, which would include Sunpass express lanes similar to those on 95 and would result in a structure as tall as Metrorail running along US 1 from Dadeland to Florida City, which would impact the Village of Pinecrest as well as other communities. She is also concerned about the current high windstorm insurance rates. As an active EWM Realtor in the Miami Association of Realtors, Wollmann has knowledge and experience that should prove helpful in addressing related issues that can impact Pinecrest or that come before the council. Wollmann has said that as a council member she would encourage businesses and landowners along US 1 to make stores more appealing while protecting the privacy of neighboring residents, and continue working with state legislators and the Miami Association of Realtors to address windstorm insurance reform. With her knowledge of the issues that concern Pinecrest residents and her desire to keep the Village a multi generational community, the Pinecrest Tribune feels that Wollmann deserves your vote. THE PINECREST TRIBUNE ENDORSES BILL NELSON FOR UNITED STATES SENATE Nelson Bill Nelson, a fifth-generation Floridian, was elected to the Florida Legislature in 1972 and has been serving the public ever since. He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1978 where he served six terms representing Orlando and the Space Coast and became an early advocate for a balanced federal budget. In 1994, he was elected to the Florida Cabinet as state Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner and Fire Marshal. After serving for six years as a strong consumer advocate, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. He currently serves on the Senate Commerce, Budget, Finance, Intelligence and Aging committees and is recognized as the leading congressional expert on NASA. I'm embarrassed to admit to this singular focus because, for forever and a day, I've counseled my children to pursue their passions. They seem to have done that, and managed one more feat. Acknowledgements from our children tend to the rare, but I think he understands better than most. Many ofhis friends are burdened with student debt, a commitment that affects everything they do long after they receive their sheepskin. And while it's true that a college degree usually guarantees better wages, skyrocketing tuition may delay or stop some students from enrolling. That's an expensive mistake. Remember hearing about that growing chasm between the haves and have-nots? It's not just about income. It's also about education. At a time when the country needs a better prepared workforce, college is growing increasingly unaffordable for the middle class. Ifit weren't. for community colleges - I'm a proud graduate of Miami-Dade - too many worthy students might not further their education beyond high school. This isn't whining from the 99 percent. It's a worrisome reality about how we invest in our human capital. The average sticker price of a college education has soared by almost 140 percent in the past two decades, the non-profit College Board estimates. But median income for the middle class? Down 5 percent in just the iast decade. And total wealth dropped 28 percent. So says an August Pew Research Center report. I'm disappointed how little attention college affordability has gotten from our presidential candidates, both.ofwhom are highly educated. Their focus has been on jobs-jobs-jobs, and rightly so, but consider this: A report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce has estimated that the demand for educated workers may outstrip supply by This week a national study reported that the average student-loan debt for borrowers in the college class of 20ll rose to about $26,500, a 5 percent increase from the previous year. The Institute for College Access and Success's Project op. Student Debt also said that about t~o-thirds of those who earned bachelor's degrees last year had loans. Translation? Someone had to move in with their parents because they couldn't afford rent after graduation. Someone put offgraduate school though it means better prospects. Someone skipped taking a job at a small nonprofit and "sold out" his words not mine - to private sector work. Someone figures her payments will extend "until I'm a grandmother." These are the stories I hear from my children's friends and from my friends' children. They're true, and they're scary. So sure, let our presidential contenders talk about jobs-jobs-jobs all they want, but let's remind them of what they should already know. We need to encourage our youth, not throwobstacles in their way, to receive training beyond high school. The dance ensemble, which was founded by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, has several core values, which include validating an individual and the contribution she makes to the world and being the source of powerful social change. For Alexis Caputo, an adjunct at New World School of the Arts who teaches performance art, playwriting, and dance, the residency was a chance to align her passions: music, art, dialogue, and self-expression. "My role is as an artist, an activist, and an educator, who is contributing to the dialogue," Caputo said. Before then, Cassia Martins wants people to know her city so she wrote a novel called Born in Rio. "I really wanted to show the world what makes Rio such a special place," Martins said. She said the novel is a story of personal growth that develops in Rio. "I think a lot of it has a lot to do that I lived most of my adult life out of Rio,"she said. "I wanted to write an engaging story and take people through this journey of my main character, Rita." Rita is a banker in New York who leads a hectic lifestyle. She's lived in the Big Apple for 15 years when suddenly something happens to her mother. "She had an estranged relationship (with her mom)," Martins said. "She was drawn to come back to Florida." When Rita finds a box of letters about her mother, what she learns takes her back to Rio. In writing Born in Rio, Martins wanted to take people to Brazil and through its customs. Although she has lived most of her adult life in the U.S., she loves her native Brazil and wants her readers to love it as well. "I really worked very hard in showing the soul of Brazil," Martins said. "This was one of the main reasons why I wrote the story. I wanted people to see Brazil. She graduated from Boston University and has an MBA in marketing. When she was working on her application for Wharton School of Economics at Penn, she said it made her think about where she was and what she wanted out of life. "That's when I first started thinking about the story," Martins said. "When I graduated, I had the story shaped. Then it was a matter of taking the time to write it and I wrote it in nine months." Her process was to write 700 words a day. "I was very structured. Sometimes the words were not good, but still I did it. I learned to respect myself in terms of how far I can go and how I can respect myself." It wasn't always easy. The days she had writer's block were tough but she tried to relax and focus on something else. "But when I least expected it, the words would come to me," she said. Cassia Martins is pictured in front of the famous landmark statue in Rio de Janeiro. Once Born in Rio was completed, she began the process of self-publishing. She chose to use Amazon's service Create Space because it allowed her to have control over her book. "I really like the process," Martins said. "It was able to be out to the public pretty fast after I created the book." Martins lives in south Miami-Dade. She came to the U.S. as a teen and her family stayed in the Miami area while she went off to get her degrees. She came back to South Florida for her family. These days, she works in finance and spends her spare time promoting her book. In fact, a signing was scheduled for late September at Books and Books and she will be at the Miami Book Fair International on Nov. 18. After a three-year championship drought, this year's Blazers look to restore the program to national prominence. This season, there are 15 players coming into play, looking to build off last year's season. Among them is 6-foot sophomore standout Darrian Dempsey, whose 15-point-per-game average resulted in his being named ' Newcomer of the Year' in the league. The Blazer squad will feature two transfer players: 6-foot-3-inch sophomore Jarvis Craft from Miami Dade Community College and 6-foot-4-inch sophomore R.J. Brown from Independence Community College in Kansas. Coming into this season, Coach McGraw has a lot of question marks as to his player rotation. Outside of Dempsey and returning starter Jason Nwisienyi, the minutes are largely up for grabs. "We're going to let the players play in real game situations and see who separates themselves from the pack," McGraw said. This season kicks off Oct. 6 with the Jerry Mullen Dallas Junior College Shoot Out tournament against Frank Phillips College, Western Oklahoma and Bossier Parish. The Blazers are also scheduled to play three more scrimmages on Oct. 13,20 and 25 before official play begins on Nov /29/2012
