1 Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Languages, Cultures and Communication SPA , F173, T/R 9:30-10:45 Fall 2015 Instructor: Kim Wells Office: LA 254 Telephone: (936) or (936) Office hours: 11:00-12:00 MWF, 11:00-12:00 TR or by appointment when possible Texts: PUNTO Y APARTE, 4th Edition, ISBN Description: Spanish 232 is the fourth level of Spanish at SFASU. It is designed to continue the development of students' skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension in Spanish and help them attain a better understanding and appreciation of Hispanic culture. The class will be taught in the target language in order to facilitate and encourage the students' interest in becoming fluent in Spanish, and students should make every effort to only communicate in the target language. This course presents cultural and literary readings, and composition and grammatical review. By the end of the semester, the student will be able to converse at an intermediate level on a range of culturally relevant topics. Prerequisite: C in Spanish 231 or equivalent. Student Learning Outcomes: 1) By the end of the semester, students will review the seven grammatical communication goals and use them in discussions, compositions, and other activities related to the themes presented in Spanish ) Students will be able to converse at an intermediate level on a range of political and cultural topics using a variety of verbal tenses, aspects, and moods. 3) Student will comprehend increasingly complex and authentic texts. 4) Students will write longer compositions discussing art, articles, music and/ or historical figures or events within their cultural perspectives. 5) Students will analyze, compare and debate a number of culturally relevant issues. Program Learning Outcomes: 1) Language Competence: Students will speak, listen, read, and write in the target language. 2) Cultural Competence: Students will be able to understand the cultural context of communication in the target language. 3) Critical Thinking and Expression: Students will analyze language, literary texts, and other cultural products and practices using sound thinking and clear expression. 4) Transferable Skills: Students will connect academic experience to personal and professional goals. Organization: This course will cover selected material from chapters 1-6 in PUNTO Y APARTE, 4th Edition
2 Attendance: Attendance is mandatory as participation is an integral part of your grade. Students who miss class more than two times must contact the professor. Participation: Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the material indicated on the course schedule. As speaking and listening are essential components of learning a second language, students will be expected to participate actively during the class period. This type of participation requires that students are respectful and attentive to others. Distracting behavior will result in a low participation grade. Homework will be due before class begins or by the assigned date on the website. Cell phones are not permitted in the classroom. They must be turned off and put away before class begins. Final grades are determined as follows: *Exams or equivalent 30% *Tests or equivalent / Compositions / Oral Q-A 25% Participation (Attendance, Homework, Quizzes) 25% Final Exam 20% A = B = C = D = *Exam and test dates are indicated in the course syllabus. Students may be exempt from both if they maintain an A or B average, participate regularly in Spanish, and demonstrate that they have mastered the vocabulary, readings and other assignments well enough to accurately use the seven communication strategies targeted in the text throughout the semester. If a student must take the test or exam, it will be given on the indicated date and there will be no make-ups with the exception of excused absences. Exempt students will come to class 40 minutes late unless everyone is exempt. There will be short unannounced quizzes periodically to encourage regular participation and review. Academic Honesty: Academic dishonesty, cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. All students in this class are expected to comply with university policies regarding academic honesty. Any student caught cheating will receive a grade of zero on the assignment and will be reported to the dean of his or her major school. All homework should be your own. Students are not allowed to use translation programs, native speakers, LRC workers or other students to assist them with assignments. Doing so constitutes academic dishonesty and will be dealt with according to university policy. Definition of Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty includes both cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes but is not limited to (1) using or attempting to use unauthorized materials to aid in achieving a better grade on a component of a class; (2) the falsification or invention of any information, including citation, on an assigned exercise; (3) helping or attempting to help another in an act of cheating or plagiarism. Plagiarism is presenting the works or ideas of another person as if they were your own. Examples of plagiarism are; (1) submitting an assignment as if it were one's own work when, in fact, it is at least partly the work of another; (2) submitting a work that has been purchased or otherwise obtained from an Internet source or another source; and (3) incorporating the works or ideas of an author into one's paper without giving the author due credit.withheld Grades: Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record and with the approval of the academic
3 chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannot complete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students must complete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which they receive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. If students register for the same course in future terms the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point averages. Disability Services: In accordance with University policy, students with disabilities who need accommodations are expected to initiate a meeting with the professor immediately upon registering with Disability Services to discuss how accommodations included on the Special Accommodations Request form will be provided. Students with disabilities who may have special needs and have not requested support services should seek assistance through Disability Services.
