3 JULY 2016 CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY (December 8, November 20, 2016) A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW PASTOR Dear Friends, On July 1, 2015 I began my assignment as Coadjutor Pastor here at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. During the past year I have had an opportunity to acquaint myself with the pastoral and ministerial needs of the Cathedral Parish. During the first few months, Cathedral ministry seemed so overwhelming. I questioned whether or not I had what was necessary to be the Pastor of a Cathedral Parish. Gradually, as the days and weeks passed, through prayer and the support of many, I realized this is where God wants me to serve as a Pastor at this moment in my life. As I begin my ministry as your Pastor, I thank you for your prayers and for all you have done to support and welcome me during the past year. I especially thank Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik for his commitment and dedicated years of service as the Cathedral Pastor. With God s grace, I hope to continue to build upon the foundation he has set. I would also like to thank Archbishop José Gomez for entrusting to me the pastoral and temporal care of the Cathedral Parish. Please be assured of my prayers for you and know that I am here to serve you as a pastor and fellow disciple of Jesus. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN (October June) Application Requirements: Registered and Active Parishioner for a minimum of six months; Application Deadline: July 31 Parents must attend all sessions and commit to working with their children on a weekly basis in the home. General Faith Formation: One Sunday a Month for the whole family, all ages welcome. Sessions begin with 8:00 am Mass including Children s Liturgy of the Word Dismissal followed by intergenerational session involving parents and children from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. First Communion (1st grade and up) and Confirmation (high school only) Preparation : These are both two year programs. Families attend a second session each month in addition to the General Faith Formation Session. It allows you to eliminate or defer gains tax. It gives you a steady cash flow and may also be more beneficial than keeping an asset or selling it outright. Keep in mind: It pays beneficiaries a fixed percentage of the value of the principal and can be made for beneficiaries lifetimes for up to 20 years The annual payment rate is not less than 5% and charitable remainder at least 10% of value of assets contributed Donors charitable deduction is based on market value of assets contributed less the present value of the income interest retained. Parents should avoid lecturing and start talking Lecturing teenagers may feel like the right path to take, especially if they are starting to develop bad habits or make poor choices, but lecturing is usually the least effective way to get your message across. Children tend to see lectures as condescending and abstract, and this detracts from the wisdom and advice you are trying to provide. Instead of lecturing, try to engage your child in calm, open conversation that addresses the issue while allowing you both to talk about what s going on.
