1 Nouns, Articles, and Pronouns Nouns Nouns identify people, animals, places, and things. All Spanish nouns, even if they refer to objects, are either masculine or feminine. They are also either singular or plural. Nouns ending in -o are usually masculine; nouns ending in -a are usually feminine. To form the plural of a noun, add -s if the noun ends in a vowel; add -es if it ends in a consonant. Definite articles are the equivalent of the English word the. Indefinite articles are the equivalent of a, an, or some. 2 Pronouns Pronouns take the place of nouns. The pronoun used is determined by its function or purpose in a sentence. yo tú usted él, ella Subject Pronouns nosotros(as) vosotros(as) ustedes ellos(as) Direct Object Pronouns me nos te os lo, la los, las Indirect Object Pronouns me nos te os le les Pronouns After Prepositions mí nosotros(as) ti vosotros(as) usted ustedes él, ella ellos(as) Reflexive Pronouns me nos te os se se Adjectives Adjectives describe nouns. In Spanish, adjectives match the gender and number of the nouns they describe. To make an adjective plural, add -s if it ends in a vowel; add -es if it ends in a consonant. The adjective usually comes after the noun in Spanish. 3 Adjectives (continued) Sometimes adjectives are shortened when they are placed in front of a masculine singular noun. Shortened Forms alguno algún chico bueno buen chico malo mal chico ninguno ningún chico primero primer chico tercero tercer chico Possessive adjectives indicate who owns something or describe a relationship between people or things. They agree in number with the nouns they describe. Nuestro(a) and vuestro(a) must also agree in gender with the nouns they describe. Their English equivalents are this, that, these, and those. 4 Comparatives Comparatives are used to compare two people or things. Comparatives más (+) menos ( ) tan, tanto (=) más serio que... menos serio que... tan serio como... Me gusta leer más que pasear. Me gusta pasear menos que leer. Me gusta hablar tanto como escuchar. There are a few irregular comparative words. When talking about the age of people, use mayor and menor. When talking about qualities, use mejor and peor. Age mayor menor Quality mejor peor Affirmative and Negative Words Affirmative or negative words are used to talk about indefinite or negative situations. 7 Verbs: Present Participles Present participles are used with a form of estar to say that an action is in progress at this moment. Regular affirmative tú commands are the same as the él/ella forms in the present tense.
