2 Proyecto / Project Español: Sketch Pal es un libro didáctico que usa el arte como herramienta para promover conexiones entre estudiantes de diversos entornos socioeconómicos y culturales. El proyecto es un intercambio de libros entre equipos de dos estudiantes de diferentes escuelas. Los equipos colaboran para crear arte en forma de dibujos sobre estos temas: mi familia y mi comunidad, mis sueños y ambiciones, mi país y mi vida. Cuando intercambian, reflejan sobre su trabajo y el de su compañero/a y dibujan una combinación de ambos. El proyecto se puede hacer en paralelo con dos escuelas (privada o pública, o incluso en la misma escuela). Sketch Pal puede ser integrado en un currículo de arte o lenguaje y se puede utilizar como un crédito, crédito addicional o como actividad extracurricular. English: Sketch Pal is a didactic book that uses art as a tool to promote connections between students from different socioeconomic and cultural environments. Student dyads made up of students from two different schools, collaborate to create art in the form of sketches over the following topics: my family and my community, my dreams and ambitions, my country, and my life. After books are exchanged, students reflect on their own work and the work of their partner and then draw a combination of both. The project can be done in parallel with two schools (private or public, or even within one school). Sketch Pal can be integrated into an arts or language arts curriculum and can be used for credit, extra credit, or as an extracurricular activity.

3 Objetivo / Objective Nosotros creemos que el talento artístico y la habilidad intelectual no se determinan con base en la clase social en la que uno crece, sin embargo entendemos que no todos tienen las mismas oportunidades para desarrollar talento artístico e intelectual. Nuestro objetivo es crear un puente de entendimiento entre clases sociales y culturales mediante la observación, reflexión, análisis y contraposición de estos libros. Demostrando que independientemente del contexto social y cultural, todos somos iguales. Nuestra intención es desarrollar una colección de arte que exponga nuestras similitudes y/o diferencias como seres humanos. We believe that artistic talent and intellectual ability is not determined on the basis of social or cultural categories; however we understand that not everyone has the same opportunities to develop artistic and intellectual talent. Our goal is to create a bridge of understanding between social and cultural classes through observation, reflection, analysis and contrast of these books. Demonstrating that regardless of social and cultural context, we should consider ourselves as equal. Our intention is to develop an art collection that exposes our similarities and/or differences as human beings.

4 Como funciona / How it works Cada estudiante recibe un folleto de sketch pal y se le asigna un compañero. La primera parte está designada a realizar una introspección personal para crear representaciones visuales de acuerdo a los cuatro temas. Después de que los estudiantes completen los cuatro dibujos, intercambian los folletos. La segunda parte, se trata de interpretar, analizar y reflexionar sobre el trabajo de su compañero y el propio y crear una respuesta sobre el trabajo de su compañero. La tercera fase consiste en combinar ambos bocetos para crear una sola composición describiendo la interpretación de sí mismo y de su compañero. Each student is given a sketch pal booklet and is assigned a partner. The first part is based on self introspection and creating visual representations in response to the themes. After both students complete the drawings for the four themes, the booklet is exchanged. The second part consists of interpreting, analyzing, and reflecting over their partner s work and creating a response to their partner s sketch. The third phase involves combining both of their sketches to create one composition that describes both the interpretation of his or her own work and that of his or her partner s.

7 Conclusiones / Conclusions Nuestro objetivo con este libro es fomentar la participación, interacción y reflexión con el fin de fomentar el entendimiento entre diversas culturas y clases sociales. Esta actividad pretende crear una vía de expresión a través de medios visuales, ayudar a los estudiantes a practicar sus habilidades de analizar e interpretar el trabajo de otros, animarlos a trabajar artísticamente con otra persona, estimular auto-reflexión e introspección y darles la oportunidad de aprender de la vida de otra persona con la que él o ella, de otro modo, no tendrían ninguna conexión. *Este libro es un recurso gratuito que los educadores pueden imprimir y utilizar como una actividad en sus clases. Our goal for this book is to foster participation, interaction, and reflection in order to create understanding between diverse cultures and social classes. This activity hopes to create an avenue for expression through visual means, help students practice skills in analyzing and interpreting other people s work, encourage them to work artistically with another person, stimulate self reflection and introspection, and give them the opportunity to learn about another person s life which he or she otherwise would have no connection to. *This book is a free resource that educators can print out and use as an activity in their classes.
