HOW YOUR TRANSIT SYSTEM WORKS - provides bus service to the greater and areas, as far south as Paso Robles and Big Sur and as far north as Santa Cruz and San Jose. Service originates from two primary locations the Plaza, in central, and the, in downtown (see page 25). From these two locations, the bus lines branch out like spokes on a wheel (see pages 26 &27). Service also originates from the Exchange and Sand City. On most lines, the bus travels out to its terminal, the end of the "spoke," then returns to its point of origin. The Watsonville lines connect with Santa Cruz Metropolitan District (METRO) at the Watsonville in downtown Watsonville (see maps on pages 24 and 25). Line 78 connects with METRO at METRO in downtown Santa Cruz. Line 55 San Jose Express connects with Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) in downtown San Jose and the Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Diridon Caltrain s. Line 83 Fort Hunter Liggett Paso Robles Express connects with San Luis Obispo Regional Authority at the Paso Robles Transportation. HOW TO RIDE THE BUS The following steps will answer some questions and help make your trip a pleasant one. For questions about bus stop locations or trip planning, please feel free to call MST toll free at MST- BUS1 or visit 8 Effective 3/28/15 1. WHERE DO I CATCH THE BUS? Bus stops are identified with an MST sign. Check the sign for which bus lines stop there. Signal the coach operator to stop by standing up at a bench or shelter when the bus approaches. Please be at the stop to signal that you want to board. Arrive at your stop a few minutes early so you can be in place to signal the bus. Have your fare, pass or ticket ready when boarding. Buses stop only at designated MST stops. 2. WHICH BUS LINE DO I TAKE? See the bus service diagrams on pages 26 & 27 to determine which bus lines will take you to your destination. You may need to transfer from one line to another to reach that destination. See page 25 for transit center boarding locations. Identify your bus by looking for the bus line number and direction in the sign above the windshield. Buses headed toward a transit center or transit exchange will say,, or Sand City. Buses headed toward other destinations will state the furthermost stop in that direction. For example: 41 Northridge This bus is heading AWAY from the to Northridge Mall 41 This bus is heading TOWARD the Before boarding, check the sign to make sure it is the bus you want to take. If you are not sure, ask the coach operator to help you. 3. WHEN WILL THE BUS ARRIVE? The schedules for each bus line are in this Rider's Guide. They are listed by line number. See the directory on the cover. Each line has a map and departure schedule with timepoints for several stops along its route. The buses travel through the schedule from the left to the right. The timepoints in the schedule correspond with the timepoints shown on the map. To know when to be at a stop that is between two timepoints, use the timepoint before your stop. TIMEPOINT As you use these schedules, it is good to remember that heavy traffic, passenger loads, adverse weather, or other factors may prevent buses from running on time. We recommend that you allow extra travel time. 4. HOW DO I PAY? You can use cash, GoPasses, or a GoCard on all MST buses. Have your payment ready when you board. Cash goes in the farebox. Exact change preferred. Change cards will be issued for future fares and are not redeemable for cash. Change cards do not expire. Swipe your GoPass or tap your GoCard on the farebox. If you are using a discounted fare (youth, seniors, disabled, and Medicare card holders), the coach operator may ask to see your ID. See page 4 for details. 5. WHERE DO I SIT? After paying your fare, quickly move to a vacant seat. Please be aware that seniors and disabled persons have priority to the seats directly behind the coach operator. If all seats are taken, hold on to the grab rails. Please offer your seat to someone who may have difficulty standing on a moving bus if you are able to stand comfortably. 6. LEAVING THE BUS Watch for your destination or ask the coach operator to call it out as the bus approaches that stop. Signal the coach operator that you wish to get off at the next stop by pulling the cord above or between the windows. When the bus stops, get up and exit through the rear doors when possible. RULES TO RIDE BY Pets are not allowed except in caged carriers. Articles over 5 ft. in length are prohibited. No smoking (including e-cigarettes) on buses or within 20 feet of buses. Headphones must be used with music players with volume kept to a minimum. No eating or drinking aboard the bus. Passengers who emit foul odors are prohibited from using MST. Must wear shirt and shoes. Babies must be removed from strollers and held securely for safety reasons. Strollers and shopping carts must be folded and placed out of the aisle. MST may refuse to provide service to any individual who engages in violent, seriously disruptive, or illegal conduct. Keep cell phone conversation brief, the volume low and refrain from using speaker phone so as not to disturb other passengers. Passengers must comply with all coach operator requests or be denied boarding. SECURITY CAMERAS Cameras have been installed on MST buses and at designated bus stops to improve security. STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST TRANSIT WORKERS Harming a transit employee is punishable by substantial fines and jail time under California Penal Code. 10 Effective 3/28/15

12 SAFE RIDING TIPS While waiting at a stop, stand back from the curb until the bus makes a complete stop. Prevent small children from running or jumping toward the bus as it approaches. Never run after or touch the side of a moving bus. Watch your step when you get on and off the bus. Assist small children on and off the steps. Use handrails when boarding, riding and departing the bus. Take a seat as soon as possible after boarding and stay seated while the bus is in motion. Keep your head, hands and arms inside of the bus. Do not leave children unattended or allow them to jump or stand on seats. Never stand or sit in the bus stairwells. To avoid distracting the coach operator, please refrain from loud conversations, talking on your cell phone, yelling or causing a commotion on the bus. After you get off the bus, stand back and wait for it to leave before crossing the street. If your bike is on the bus, ask the coach operator to wait so you can remove your bike. When crossing the street, look around and be aware of passing or approaching vehicles. Avoid using a cell phone while crossing the street and keep your children next to you as you cross. Passengers that do not comply with all coach operator requests may be asked to leave the bus or may be denied boarding. BICYCLES ON BUSES Bikes ride free with paying passengers on all MST buses. Two bikes fit on the front rack and two in the wheelchair securement area, at the coach operator's discretion. IMPORTANT: Be sure to ask the coach operator to wait for you to unload your bike when you leave the bus. - will not be liable for any property damage or bodily injury caused by the loading or unloading of bicycles. Please note that some MST Trolley vehicles are not equipped to accommodate bikes. Bicycles longer than 80 inches (6.5 feet) and higher than 54 inches (4.5 feet) will not be allowed on the bike rack. Total weight placed on the bike rack shall not exceed 250 pounds. Bicycles with electric motors are allowed provided that the external battery is securely mounted, sealed, and of the nonspillable type. Bicycles with wet-cell non-sealed batteries (like most car or motorcycle batteries) are prohibited. Motorized bicycles with gas-powered engines of any kind are prohibited. BIKE LOADING INSTRUCTIONS 3 1 You are responsible for properly loading and unloading your bicycle. Remove child carriers, panniers and other luggage before bus arrives. Always load from the curb side of the bus. Alert the operator that you intend to load your bicycle, then lower the rack by pulling on the handle. 1 Lift your bicycle on to the rack. 2 Lift the support arm up and over the front tire. 3 Sit close to the front of the bus and keep an eye on your bicycle. When leaving the bus, leave by the front door. Please advise the operator that you will be removing your bicycle. Raise the rack to the upright position Effective 3/28/15

14 FREE BUS PASSES FOR ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY & DOD CIVILIANS The Department of Defense has implemented a Mass Transportation Benefit Program under Executive Order for its members. The purpose of this program is to offset commuting costs to active duty military members and DOD civilian employees, including non-appropriated fund (NAF) employees, to reduce pollution and traffic congestion, preserve the environment, and expand transportation alternatives. WHO QUALIFIES? Active duty service members, DOD employees and NAF employees who commute to work from outside of area military facilities. WHO DOES NOT QUALIFY? Dependents, contractors, retirees, reserve component service members not on active duty and service members who live on military installations. PROGRAM BENEFITS After applications have been processed, participants will receive a Department of Transportation debit card with the monthly federal transit benefit pre-loaded. Funds on the debit card allow the purchase of a Military GoPass valid for unlimited use on all MST bus routes for 31 consecutive days upon first use. Funds on the debit card are replenished on the tenth of each month. Don t forget to purchase your pass each month for continued travel on MST buses. MILITARY ROUTES MST has partnered with Fort Hunter Liggett, the Naval Postgraduate School, and the Presidio of to develop military bus routes and schedules. These routes serve individuals who commute to and from work or school, while also providing access to shopping and leisure activities off the installations. They expand commuting alternatives and reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Passengers boarding within the Presidio of installation ride free. 18 SPECIAL MEDICAL TRIPS MST s Special Medical Trips provide medical transportation two days per month to the Bay Area. The program is open to all County residents. To ride, you must make a reservation. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be made by 5:00 PM the day before you plan to travel. Cancellations must also be made before 5:00 PM the day before your reserved trip. Failure to cancel by 5:00 PM may jeopardize future riding privileges. The round-trip fare is $40 payable in cash or with MST Special Medical Trips tickets. You may bring one Personal Care Attendant registered with MST with you without charge. Other companions can ride when space is available for the $40 fare. There are no discounts offered for this program.
