To make a question (2A): + VERB + SUBJECT + DETAIL +? Habla Usted inglés? Do you speak English? 8. To say where something is in relation to another item (2B): el / la / los / las + 1 st item + estar + location word + de la / del + 2 nd word. La papelera está al lado de la silla. El reloj está debajo del escritorio. 9. To say something belongs to someone (2B): ES / SON + EL / LA / LOS / LAS + ITEM + DE + OWNER S NAME. Es la mochila de Clara. (It s Clara s backpack.) Son los papeles de Javier. (They are Javier s papers.) 10. To indicate possession (2B): ES + MI / TU+ ITEM. Es mi mochila. (It s my backback) Es tu calculadora (It s your calculator.) 11. To make nouns and adjectives plural (3B): You already know how to describe someone (see #3). You follow the same rule to describe a thing. DEFINITE ARTICLE + NOUN + ES + ADJECTIVE The hamburger is flavorful. La hamburguesa es sabrosa. The banana is bad. El plátano es malo. The pastry is popular. El pastel es popular. 12. To make the nouns and adjectives plural (3B): Add an s if it ends in a vowel and an es if it ends in a consonant. DEFINITE ARTICLE + NOUN + SON + ADJECTIVE The hamburgers are flavorful. Las hamburguesas son sabrosas. The bananas are bad. Los plátanos son malos. The pastries are popular. 4
5 Los pasteles son populares 13. To say you are going to a place (4A): IR (conjugated) + a la + feminine place (i.e. escuela). Voy a la biblioteca. I am going to the library. IR (conjugated) + al (a + el) + masculine place (i.e. gimnasio). Vamos al parque. We am going to the park. To say you are going to do an action (4B): IR (conjugated) + A + Infinitive (like bailar, comer, leer ). Ella va a comer She is going (to) (to) eat *Notice here to is used twice but only translates as once. 14. To say you have to do something (4B): Tener + que + infinitive. Tengo que estudiar. I have (to) (to) study. *Notice here to is used twice but only translates as once. 15. To say you would like to do something or have something (4B): Me gustaría + infinitive or noun. Me gustaría + comer. chocolate. Te gustaría + infinitive or noun. Te gustaría bailar? café? 16. Tener + que + infinitive- To have to do something (5A) Tengo que estudiar.
