R EADING I S F UNDAMENTAL Hispanic Book Collection RESOURCE GUIDE

HISPANIC BOOK COLLECTION Introduction Reading Is Fundamental and Dollar General welcome you and your children to the engaging stories and literacy activities in this Hispanic Book Collection Resource Guide. The guide presents a book-based multicultural approach to reading designed to involve children in the experience. This guide includes hands-on, cross-curricular activities for books centered on a multicultural theme. Why Use a Hispanic Book Collection? Literature and language influence who we are. To see children bloom, we must cultivate literacy and communication in their lives! When adults introduce culturally relevant stories to children, their interest increases, which can only motivate students to read and find out more about who they are and who they would like to be (Feger, 2006). When children read multicultural literature, they not only learn to appreciate one another but also grow to value their own culture. As Kovarik (2004) mentions, Children need to be exposed to literature that celebrates their cultural diversity and connects their real-world experiences (p. 10). This book collection will allow children to have a better understanding of the Hispanic culture as the stories describe how people live both in the United States and in other parts of the world. Research has shown that stories about the Hispanic culture have a positive impact on Hispanic children. In a literacy-rich environment, book knowledge becomes part of a child s sense of who they are in the world. Multicultural literature benefits children as they discover how to relate to and collaborate with members of their community. Being exposed to multi-cultural resources, such as the Hispanic Book Collection, can help children build pride in their Hispanic heritage, self-esteem, and respect for other cultures (Nilson 2005). The books in this collection were selected to reflect the Hispanic culture: its traditions, folktales, history, and current issues. Many of the books convey different aspects within the culture, and most of the books found in this guide were written and/or illustrated by Hispanics. Why Conduct Reading Motivational Activities? Stories are a great source of information for children. When an adult discusses a story with a child, he or she gains a better understanding of the narrative. Enhancing the stories with reading motivational activities enables children to develop their own feelings and thoughts about what they heard or read, excites their interest in reading, and helps them associate books and reading with positive, fun experiences. What are the Elements of the Hispanic Book Collection Guide? Each section of this guide is divided by a range of school grades and includes: A featured Hispanic children s book with a suggested activity; Annotated booklists for bilingual, Spanish, and English books; and Story boosters reading motivational activities. Who Should Use the Hispanic Book Collection? Teachers, childcare providers, and parents can use these resources in classrooms, community centers, or at home. Parents can also extend the stories with home-based projects and field trips. Some of the suggested stories and activities are age-specific, but most can be adapted to a broad range of ages. 1

INTRODUCTION Tips for Reading Aloud Each activity section of the guide includes a read-aloud story time. The following are some helpful hints to conduct a successful read-aloud: Before You Read a Story Give a short overview of the story. If you are continuing to read from a previous day, review what you read the day before, and discuss what might happen next. Take turns reading aloud; for example, you and your child can each read a page in an easy reader. During a Story Defer questions until after you finish reading, if possible. This helps children get fully engaged in listening to the story. Summarize, adapt, or skip parts of books that are too far above the children s level of understanding. Ask children to imagine what they might do in a situation similar to that faced by a character. Stop reading at a suspenseful point in the book. This encourages the children to be eager for the next day s read-aloud time. Relate a book you are reading to one read in the past, and talk about how they are alike and how they are different. After You Read a Story Provide materials and activities that let the children expand their understanding of a character, historical event, or situation. Talk about what you have read. Books often evoke strong feelings that need to be shared. Offer your reactions and invite the child to do the same. 29
