Connections- Social Studies, Language Art, Art, Geography, History, Technology Standard 3.1 Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language.

2 Standard 3.2 Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures. Comparisons Standard 4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the culture studied and their own. Objectives: Student will be able to. 1. Follow the directions for activities. 2. Explore their knowledge about the taínos. 3. Infer based on previous knowledge. 4. Use the internet to find out answers to their questions. 5. Use the verb tener within a context. 6. Locate places on a map. 7. Identify the colors in Spanish. New Vocabulary: Although we are not reading the book yet, it is expected that during the research the students will find some of these words if not all of them. el yucayeque el bohío el caney el batey el canuco el cacique los nitaínos el bohique el areyto el batá la yuca el casabe los artesanos el arco la flechas las macanas las hachas Materials/Resources: Pre-test Graphic organizers Caribbean Map Computer lab Procedure Warm-up The students will take a pre-test to find out how much they know or think that know about the taínos [Activity 1]. Because we are going to be at the computer lab today, the survey can be taken using Google Docs. This feature provides the advantage of making graphics of the results. The teacher won t provide the correct answers of the questions. At the end of the unit, the students will retake the test. They will compare and contrast the results using the graphics. We are going to be working on activating previous knowledge. For this activity, we are going to be using the Chart- Know, Want to Know, Learned [Activity 2]. The students will complete the first column individually, what they know or think to know about the taínos. Then, they will share their answers with their partners.

3 Introduction of New Material In the second column of Activity 2, they will write a question per topic about what they want to know about that particular area. These topics will guide the students during the research process. They will search for answers in the internet and will write them in the last column. The topics can be divided between the two partners. But at the end of their research, they will need to share their findings. Practice The students will complement their findings by going around and asking their classmates for more information. They will complete the graphic organizer La rueda de informacion [Activity 3]. They can use the following question as a guide: MODELO: Qué información tienes de la comida? Qué información tienes de las casas? Qué información tienes de la recreación? Qué información tienes de las ocupaciones? Qué información tienes de la estructura socio-política? Assessment The teacher will collect both activities. This will assure that students stay on task during their time in the computer lab. Closure Students will complete the Caribbean Map [Activity 4] and will answer the question: Qué aprendiste nuevo de los taínos? * A modified Venn Diagram can be assigned as homework. The students will write two things that the taínos had in common with their community in the 21 st century and two things that are different.
