2 To the Student of Spanish 101 (Excerpted from To the Student, Preface, page ix, Destinos, Workbook/Study Guide) Welcome to Destinos! By now you know that an important portion of the instruction in this course will take place while you watch a series of half-hour television shows. As you watch the shows, you will follow an unforgettable journey that has been designed to make learning Spanish enjoyable for you. We all like to follow the plot of a drama or television mystery show, and we eagerly await the next episode of a continuing story to find out what will happen. That sense of pleasurable suspense can be a powerful factor in helping you learn Spanish more easily. In addition, the Destinos series will allow you to experience, through the powerful medium of television, some of the many places in which Spanish is spoken (including the United States). The Destinos materials have been designed to make learning Spanish enjoyable, but they are also created to make it really possible for you to learn something about Spanish and how to use it. How many times have people told you that you get out of a course what you put into it? That adage is especially true with regard to language learning and to Destinos. What you will get out of the materials is directly related to, among other things, how much time you put into using them. In addition to watching the series, if you use the Textbook along with the Workbook/Study Guide, and if you have access to and regularly use the audio program, you can expect to accomplish a great deal with Destinos. Using the Textbook and the Workbook/Study Guide The Textbook and Workbook/Study Guide that accompany the Destinos video series are designed so that you can work through them on your own You will always start in the Texbook lesson with a special section that will prepare you to watch the show. Having watched the show, you will finish the rest of the lesson in the Textbook, then you will continue on with the corresponding lesson in the Workbook/Study Guide. (For an explanation of the design/layout of each lesson, refer to Textbook Lesson Formats and Workbook/Study Guide Lesson Formats in the preface of the Workbook/Study Guide.) Follow these simple steps to a successful Introductory Spanish course experience: Using the Textbook Before viewing the video lesson - be sure to complete the preview section (called Preparación) in the Textbook. After viewing - complete the activities in the Textbook. Be sure to have the audio materials ready to play when the "headphone" symbol appears in the margin. Answers or hints for many activities are given in the Appendix 1. Be sure to check your answers for each activity before going on to the next one. página 1

3 Using this Course Guide Follow the instructions in this Course Guide to submit some of the activities to your instructor for points toward your course grade and feedback on your progress. Using the Workbook/Study Guide Whereas the materials in the Textbook all have to do primarily with the video episode, the materials in the Workbook/Study Guide will help you expand your knowledge of the Spanish language in general, as well as give you opportunities for self-expression in Spanish. Remember to listen to the audio program when you see the headphones symbol, and to check your answers in Appendix 1. You should also scan the words in the Vocabulario list to be sure that you understand the meaning of most of them. Taking the Self-Test When you have completed the materials for each lesson of the Textbook and Workbook/Study Guide, take the corresponding self-test. Remember to use the audio program and to check your answers. (You will not submit the self-test to your instructor because it is self-scoring.) A note about study time and study habits SPA 101 is a 5-credit college course. It contains a corresponding amount of material to assist you in achieving the goals outlined in the Syllabus: to understand basic spoken Spanish, to be able to interact with Spanish speakers at a simple level and to read Spanish materials written for the second language learner. In order to succeed, you should plan on spending a minimum of 8-12 hours per week on this course. Be sure to consult with your instructor for additional hints to help you study a foreign language! Now, prepare to submit your first assignment: an introductory letter. Buena suerte! página 2

10 EXAMEN 1 Semana 4 You are now ready to take Exam 1 on Lecciónes 1-3 at one of the five NVCC Testing Centers. Be sure to take the appropriate Exam Pass from the Syllabus. The exams for this course measure synthesis of the material with some personalization of the use of Spanish. They are structured in the same manner as the self-tests and consist of: a. Written sections, including true/false, identifications and matching items that test your understanding of the telenovela and the vocabulary. The grammar questions ask you to demonstrate your knowledge of the meanings and the forms of verbs by completing paragraphs (using verbs in context) and writing sentences as you do in the Actividades. EXTRA POINTS or BONUS questions covering the information in the Notas culturales may also be included. You should allow yourself approximately 1 1/2 hours to complete this section. b. Listening comprehension sections on audio tape. One or two sections will require that you listen to questions similar to those you encountered on the self-tests, in which you demonstrate understanding spoken Spanish by making a written response to an oral question. c. An oral production test is to be done at home, using the Voice Mail Box # When you complete the exam in the Testing Center, you will be given a sheet of instructions to complete at home. You may be asked to record a reading from your textbook or Workbook/Study Guide and/or you will be asked a question or two, usually about yourself or the characters in Destinos. The ELI Policy and Procedures for examinations are listed in the Syllabus. The following is a summary: Prepare for the Exam. Call the Testing Center for its hours. Take a Photo ID and the appropriate Exam Pass (found in the Syllabus) to the Testing Center. Take the written sections at the Testing Center. You are not allowed to use your text, Workbook/Study Guide or any other course materials while taking an exam. Follow instructions for taking the oral production exam at home. If you are outside metropolitan Washington, incarcerated or handicapped, see the information in the Syllabus. Please do not let the exams stop you from completing the course. If you have great difficulty getting to a learning lab or are very concerned about taking exams, please call your instructor instead of giving up! página 9

14 LECCIÓN 6: Maestra? Semana 7 1. Follow the steps which you have followed before to complete this lesson. You will notice that Lección 6 is different from the previous ones. It is a review lesson. No new vocabulary or grammatical structures are introduced. Very little is added to the story line of the telenovela. This is an opportunity to review the story, the characters and most of all, the vocabulary. Remember that VOCABULARY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS in a foreign language course. The exercises in Lección 6 are preparing you for your Exam 2. In the Destinos, Workbook/Study Guide, you will find several different exercises to help you review the verb forms, adjectives, and sentence patterns you have learned so far. There are several study sheets in the Appendix of this Course Guide. The study sheets are included to help you organize your studying. STUDY HINT: As you practice, try organizing your studying by writing down everything you can now say about each of the main characters in the story. See the example about Elena Ramirez in the Appendix (Ejemplo: Lección 6) of this Course Guide. This kind of activity will force you to use the words and structures in original but controlled sentences. If you wish, you may submit some of these sentences with the Lección 6 submissions. You will also find a list of Lugares (places) that have played roles in the story so far in the Course Guide Appendix. Can you identify most of them? This is also a great way to review the story. To help you study your verbs, in the Appendix you will find a table of the basic paradigms for regular verbs in Spanish. Following this guide, do the same for other verbs you are learning. Call the instructor if you are having difficulty! There is no self-test for Lección 6. You will want to review the self-sests for Lecciónes 2-5 in preparation for Exam 2 which will include all the material you have been learning from the beginning. 2. ASSIGNMENT: While you are waiting for your corrected worksheet exercises and studying for Exam 2, retrieve the questions that you submitted with Lección 5 and which your instructor has returned with comments. A. Identify someone who speaks Spanish and ask them if you might interview him/her on tape for this course. Using a cassette recorder, interview the individual. Before you start, tell him/her that you only know the present tense so página 13

15 far and ask that he/she understand the need to be "simple." Ask the person to confine his/her answers to simple information directly responding to the questions. If you don't understand the answer, say "Lo siento, no comprendo." (I'm sorry, I don't understand.) Confine yourself to the questions approved by your instructor. B. After you have completed the interview, summarize the interview ORALLY at the end of the tape: tell the instructor, en español, claro!, what you have been able to learn about your friend. C. Follow the usual mailing instructions to send your tape to your instructor. Be sure to write your name on the cassette label. =========================================== For Lección 6, submit: 1. In the Course Guide Appendix, after the Lección 9 exercises, you will find several pages with squares and words: concentration game boards. When reviewing your verbs and vocabulary, you might enjoy this additional activity: Before cutting the squares, place a mark (e.g., an X) on the back of all the English squares; this way you will be able to distinguish the two sets of squares when the words are "hidden." You should find that playing the game, with family or friends, or even by yourself (against the clock!) will increase vocabulary recall. 2. Take Exam 3 at one of the five NVCC Testing Centers. While you are expected to be able to use all the language you have learned in Lecciónes 1-9, this exam places emphasis on testing the content of Lecciónes 7, 8, y 9.
