Five students from San Antonio and surrounding areas were selected to participate in an eight-week paid summer internship with the Bank of America Student Leaders Program. This program is part of Bank of America s commitment to help engage and prepare teens for a bright future and opportunities ahead. With numbers of unemployed teens and young adults at a record high, Bank of America is taking measures in uniting young people in educational programs that provide job and internship opportunities to prepare them for success in the 21st century workforce. Since 2004, Bank of America has connected 60 teens from San Antonio with summer employment and has supported 2,200 young people nationwide through the Student Leaders Program. Five students from San Antonio are chosen each year to participate. 220 high school juniors and seniors from across the country are awarded an experience of a lifetimeto network, develop long-lasting friendships, and learn valuable skills for life in the workforce. Each year we see these students come in, and they re impressive and accomplished, but when they leave this program, they re changed. They are more mature and they have seen opportunities that they wouldn t see working in a fast food restaurant. The interns have encountered challenges and difficulties, but they have excellent leadership by their side to help them through it, Bank of America San Antonio President, Kenny Wilson told La Prensa. Jocelyn Hernandez and Victoria Gonzalez are two of five San Antonio area students selected for Bank of America s Student Leaders program, where they worked with non-profit organizations. Having faced adversity, social struggles and bullying, these young ladies used their tough endeavors as motivation to work harder to achieve academic and leadership success. They chose to rise above their trials and tribulations, and pursue an opportunity that would impact them for the better. Victoria Gonzalez recently spoke with La Prensa to detail her experience with the Student Leaders Program. In June, Victoria was assigned to work with 13 students at Montgomery Elementary School s STEM summer program. She assisted students in completing STEM projects and science experiments, and even went on a few field trips. That was my favorite part of the internship- just being able to work with the kids, teachers, and coordinators, Gonzalez admits. Victoria and the four other students from San Antonio spent the second half of their internship working with Communities in Schools of San Antonio. This program is a nonprofit organization that provides a safe and healthy environment for at-risk students through educational and social support services. In July, all of the student leaders received an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. for the Student Leaders Summit. Student leaders attend workshops, speaking engagements, and group discussion sessions where they speak with political leaders and non-profit organization representatives. In the time spent at the summit, student leaders gain better insight on what is taking place in their communities, and how they can use their skills and strengths to make a difference. The interns have many opportunities to build their skills. From learning about poverty, service projects, being on Capitol Hill and receiving exposure from political leaders- they come back and they re different. They can t say enough about it, Wilson says. The student leaders have a chance to focus on issues that are happening in their communities; by discussing these problems with other interns and political representatives, they find effective steps and solutions that result in positive change. It was a really great experience. We heard speakers and authors we met with our political representatives, we had tours of the capital, and we saw monuments. It was a good opportunity to really brainstorm with other people who are as driven and ambitious as I am, to make a change, Gonzalez says, Our motto is serve, inspire, and change- that was the theme for the whole week. It s great to do well, but you also have to give back. Every opportunity provided with this program has given Victoria a better sense of her strengths, and what she is able to accomplish. Victoria is proud of her Hispanic heritage but recognizes the struggles that minorities face, including access to quality healthcare and difficulties that minority women have in breaking cycles of poverty. She is inspired to create change, and hopes to start her own scholarship fund and be a role model for students, reminding them to be proud of where they come from. Victoria shared a powerful message stating, It s great to achieve status and make money but you should also remember- how can I use the gifts and talents I have been blessed with to help others? You have to have some humanity in all that you do, and you shouldn t ever forget where you came from. Victoria Gonzalez will study premed at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where she received a full-ride scholarship and will be the first person in her family to apply to medical school. Victoria aspires to become a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, bringing quality healthcare to low socio-economic areas by starting a health clinic in her own community as well as traveling the world through Doctors Without Borders. Esto es bastante cierto, lo puedo asegurar en esta columna dedicada a la salud. Recientemente, más bien el Día del Padre, mi esposa e hijos decidieron darme la sorpresa regalándome un moderno teléfono celular. Ese día se me hizo raro que mi antiguo teléfono no aceptara llamadas. O cuando intente enviar un texto se me rechazaba indicándome que temporalmente estaba fuera de servicio. Tal fue mi cólera que al reclamarle a la dueña de mis quincenas ella y los chicos me entregaron la nueva pieza telefónica que según e llos yo necesitaba para poner me al parejo con lo que dicta la tecnología moderna. El mayor de mis hijos, que recientemente obtuvo diploma de ingeniero en computación y ahora comenzara a dar clases en el prestigiado colegio Texas A&M recinto San Antonio, se encargó de darme instrucciones sobre el funcionamiento del nuevo aparato. Como quiera que sea, al pasar los días, yo seguía extrañando mi viejo teléfono, en el cual tenía ya todo controlado con datos personales y un sinfín de números telefónicos almacenados. Tuve que volver a archivar todos los datos en el nuevo sistema, que a decir verdad es más rápido y eficaz que el teléfono viejito. Lo único que mi hijo no me enseñó fue que cuando fuese caminando no chequeara el teléfono. El sábado 27 de junio al finalizar la cobertura del partido Stars de San Antonio y Storm de Seattle, el cual se jugó a las 7 p.m. en el Coliseo Freeman y concluyó a las 9:30 de la noche, al retirarme del legendario coso un amable empleado de los que cuidan las puertas de entrada y salida optó por darme luz verde para que saliera por un costado del inmueble, ya que así estaría evitando el conglomerado de fans que todavía faltaban por abandonar el edificio que administra el condado de Bexar y en esta temporada es la casa del equipo femenil Stars. Regularmente las Stars tienen su sede en el AT&T Center, pero este se encuentra en periodo de remodelación. Entonces, aproveché recortar el terreno rumbo al estacionamiento donde había dejado mi unidad automotriz. A unos cuantos pasos de haber salido del Coliseo, me adentré a un área oscura que divide al Coliseo y al AT&T Center. De pronto sentí el vibrador del teléfono, por lo que sin percatarme de la oscuridad de inmediato lo saqué del bolsillo para checar la llamada. De repente sentí tremendo golpe en mi rodilla izquierda, el cual tuvo efecto en la mitad de mi cuerpo. Tras recuperar la visión, pude ver que había impactado a un hidrante (de color rojo obscuro). Mi reacción fue de coraje conmigo mismo, ya que por no haber tenido precaución suficiente me quede viendo estrellitas y de paso soportando el dolor. Ya tomando control de mi físico decidí quedarme un momento recargado en el hidrante para contestar la llamada, la cual era de un conocido que me había llamado para darme datos sobre el primer aniversario del fallecimiento de su señora esposa. A mi estimado conocido le urgía ponerse en contacto conmigo ya que deseaba que publicara un recordatorio sobre el legado deportivo que dejó en la región de El Álamo su esposa. En fin, le tomé los datos y nos pusimos de acuerdo para luego recabar más información. Le indiqué lo que me había pasado por haber contestado el teléfono sin darme cuenta del peligro que acechaba en esos momentos. Lo mejor de todo fue que no amerité acudir a la sala de emergencia. Han pasado ya varias semanas y el dolor persiste. He ido al quiropráctico y nada. He visitado al huesero y lo mismo. Como he venido recuperándome es por una sugerencia de un buen amigo que dirige una liga en el balompié regional, quien desde hace años se encuentra postrado en silla de ruedas con problemas para caminar. Mire, mi Franco, usted cuando llegue a casa, si es que tiene plantas de sábila, corte unas cinco pencas y póngalas en agua hervida (medio galón) con sal regular. Entonces, tome una pequeña toalla, sumérjala y luego exprímala, para que de inmediato se la ponga sobre la parte donde tiene la lesión. Haga ese proceso hasta que sienta alivio, ya que lo que a usted le molesta son los tendones que se encuentran inflamados. Con ese remedio le aseguro que pronto dejará de andar cojeando, expresó mi estimado conocido. Esta semana comencé el tratamiento y he sentido alivio, cuando menos ya el dolor de la rodilla desapareció. Ahora lo que me queda son algunas que otras punzadas en la parte de la cadera y espalda que también con el sorpresivo golpe se resintieron. En casos como el mío, a diario sucede ese tipo de accidentes, ello de acuerdo a estudios realizados por centros médicos y colegios que realizan sondeos de salud. Leyendo uno de esos estudios aprecié párrafos en los que se dijo que quienes sufren mayores daños personales son los que van texteando o revisando sus llamadas mientras caminan tanto en la vía pública como en el sitio de empleo, en casa habitación y centros de diversión (turísticos y locales). Esto pues impactan contra muros, paredes, postes de luz, autos estacionados, contra personas en la vía pública, pisan piedras que los vándalos suelen sacar de sitios que adornan jardines y parques, al bajarse de la banqueta, y hasta se caen de las escaleras en los interiores de edificios y casas, etc. Por lo cual, muchos de ellos han ameritado ser atendidos en la sala de emergencia. Para evitar ese tipo de accidentes que además son humillantes, los adultos tenemos que educar nos y a la vez hacer lo mismo con los pequeños y adolescentes, ya que nosotros somos los que pagaremos los costos de hospital. En lo personal creo que apren dí bien la lección. De hoy en ade lante seré más cuidadoso y me daré tiempo para checar mi teléfono siempre y cuando esté en un lugar seguro y no en la vía pública. (Courtesy Photo) By Madeline Davis So, how long have you been here, Sister? My mother and I are following the monastery s portress to the guesthouse, and are thinking she looks 18. Twenty five years. The diminutive nun answers sweetly. Wow- you don t look like you could be twenty-five years old! It s the Lord! It s such a blessed life! Sister Therese beams. It truly is all about the Lord at Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery in Roswell, NM. The life of the Poor Clare Colettine (P.C.C.) is consecrated to the King of Kings in the four vows of Poverty, Chastity, Obedience, and Enclosure. All are manifests in their daily lives, which are concentrated expressions of what all Christians lives are meant to be in various vocations - devoted to the love and service of the Lord, and completely at His disposal. The simplicity of the monastery s design, the sisters habits (practical Tau-cross-shaped brown dresses), their simple meals (perpetually abstaining from meat), going barefoot indoors, and their spiritual mother St. Clare s commitment to work, all underscore the commitment to embrace the privilege of poverty. The sisters do what they can to support themselves in the monastery, but there is also a beautiful relationship with the secular Roswell community, where Catholics and non-catholics alike support the sisters. The next three vows are all critical to their monastery life, but the one most often misunderstood is Enclosure. There are varying degrees of enclosure among different religious communities, but the Poor Clare Colettines retain papal enclosure, which is the best designed to guard The King s Rooms - as Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C., (late abbess of the Roswell community), has referred to the enclosure walls in her work of the same name. In this booklet, she explains, It is not that the Church asks the Poor Clares to vow that they will stay inside, but that the Church honors their totality of self-donation to Jesus with the dignity and humbling glory of a vow to remain in spousal love inside, - inside the King s rooms, where all his people are gathered and where she can serve them all. Inside the loved walls that symbolize the elected enclosure of the heart and eagerness to obey the King s summons, (68). That is a teaspoon sampling of the beauty of enclosure, though it is well worth reading more of Mother Mary Francis delightful, prolific writings. Her 1956 nation-wide best-seller, The Right to be Merry, (the humorous and charming account of the founding of the Roswell community), has attracted many of the monastery s vocations from all over the world (and was also a trigger for our own visit). The monastery s phenomenal growth has allowed for the foundation of six other P.C.C. houses from it. But what Mother Mary Francis so eloquently explained about the beauty of enclosure was confirmed by a dozen different sisters there in our parlor talks with them. In these colloquiums, that seemed perfectly uninhibited by the separating screen, the sisters glowed with a joyful inner freedom that comes from their chosen enclosure and poverty. The sisters chief work for the Church is chanting the Divine Office, or Liturgy of the Hours. Their day begins with the first hour, Matins, at 12:30 a.m. The six other hours punctuate the rest of their day of prayer and work, from 5:15 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. Recreation is also included in the schedule, so the sisters can have a time to share the fruits of their day s rich silence. While our visit didn t take us into their enclosure and routine, we did get to share in their prayer times, (praying on the public s side of the chapel), and in their simple meals. My mother and I were surprised how sustaining the modest meals were: coffee and two slices of home-made bread for the morning repast, midday dinner, which included a bread wipe for not wasting any of the soup, and the evening collation (bread and cheese, milk and cereal, and a handful of their trees pecans). Even though our time with these sisters was only a few days, it is impossible to relate here the fullness of our experience. In the final week of Spurs Camp, the young participants were filled with excitement as Spurs shooting guard Danny Green made an appearance at the George Gervin Youth Center. Green hosted a Q and A, however, the former North Carolina Tarheel tested the young ballers basketball IQ s. Green asked how well they knew Tarheel basketball as well as Spurs basketball. Afterwards, Green played multiple games of knockout with each of the participants. Post camp, Green reflected on the summer and his expectations for the season. He wants to start training and getting back into basketball shape. He expects most of his teammates to be there by September. I think September, we ll start hosting some open gyms, Green said. I ll be there for sure last year most of the guys were trickling in around that time. This past summer for the San Antonio Spurs was not an ordinary one. The Spurs made blockbuster moves during free agency, acquiring LaMarcus Aldridge, David West, Ray McCallum and Jonathan Simmons. It is hard to compare it to any other summer any other organization has ever had, Green said. [The] Spurs organization had a great summer, The Spurs haven t had a big man whose presence in the paint was an issue for opposing teams since Duncan s knees were younger. The old guys are not going to be around for long so try to takeover where they left off. Manu and I play the same position, If I could duplicate anywhere near what he has done here, if I can do half of it, I consider it a great career. After signing his deal, he still doesn t feel any added pressure individually. Not with the team we have, Green said. There s a lot less pressure on me with the guys that we brought in. There s pressure every year for the Spurs in general, not just to win, but to do well and how we re looked at. We re always going to be targeted. He adds that the Spurs are used to high expectations every season. We just won a championship two years ago (one year ago, 2014), and we re always one of the top teams in the league, one of the teams to beat. Especially with the offseason we had, we have high expectations, a lot of pressure on all of us. But it s nothing new. Since I ve been here, it s been that way. Chemistry has defined the Spurs organization and with many new faces, this team will have to mesh well in order to win. Sports personalities and NBA fans have already crowned the Spurs the 2016 NBA Champions and Green expects Coach Gregg Popovich to put this team in the best position to win. Pop s great at handling egos and managing bodies, keeping guys fresh, Green said. He s great with that. He s excellent. But we still have to get it together, chemistry-wise. You ve got to put it together and it has to work well, and you also have to stay healthy. The Spurs were a sixth seed and had an injured Tony Parker who was a shell of himself in the 2015 playoffs. After getting bounced in game 7 of the first round, Green knew how essential it was to stay healthy and have a top seed in the playoffs. So hopefully we can stay healthy or get healthy at the right time, and get the chemistry going the way we need to going into playoff time. But we have to be able to do that early before the playoffs to make playoffs, and get a good seeding because that was important for us this past year. Stars al final de su partido contra Storm de Seattle (Coliseo Freeman) subastará los uniformes y piezas color de rosa que vestirán tanto jugadoras como directivos. Parte de lo que se recaude será donado a las fundaciones Silver & Black Give Back (SBGB) y Friends of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Foundation, que opera la unidad Mobile Mammography Unit (MMU), que presta servicios a personas menos afortunadas que radican en la periferia de San Antonio y el condado de Bexar. Free Range Concepts, a resturant group from Dallas, Texas, decided it was time to open new doors for San Antonio. Restaurateur, Kyle Noonan headed south with a new concept. I love the San Antonio market. I think it s a burgeoning market, but its still very underserved, and for some reason many tourists like to go to other cities in Texas, but I think they really miss the boat when they don t come to San Antonio, explained Noonan. When you go to a restaurant, you should not only be surrounded by delicious food, you should also enjoy the atmosphere. The idea behind the new restaurant came from co-owner Kyle Noonan one day as he was flying to San Antonio. I was talking to my partner on the plane ride to San Antonio, you know it s something that I want to appeal to the general public and that was the light bulb moment for it, and the idea was born, Noonan further explained about the environment of the restaurant. We really wanted to create a space that became hopefully a fabric of the community of people s daily lives who are coming in for lunch or for happy hour, or dinner or even drinks late night. A diverse menu was made to be full of color, complementing the shiny new decor. You can find anything from a bacon burger to Mama s Tamale Pie, made with guajillo and ancho chicken chili, toasted cumin, cheddar cheese and cornbread crust. However, Noonan explains that oysters have also made a big splash with customers at the restaurant. We have sold so many oysters its has been one of our biggest surprises and I am glad to see we are getting credit for going the length of bringing in oysters all the way from the east coast. I mean I love Texas products I really do, but Texas Gulf oysters aren t as good. They are big; but they lack the flavor the east coast oysters have, discussed Noonan. Also keep in mind that if you have a sweet tooth, The General Public offers one delicious option: Birthday Cake. The cake is filled with white icing, topped with colorful sprinkles, is rich in flavor and moist enough to taste the eggs and other ingredients that make for the perfect dessert. The restaurant would like to reach every angle of pleasing their guests with the different plates they have to offer and the specialty drinks.
