The following are irregular comparatives: Adjective Comparative Form bueno/a (good) malo/a (bad) viejo (old) joven (young) Make comparisons using the following irregular adjectives: 1. Francisco tiene 15 años y su hermano, Héctor tiene 13. Francisco es que Héctor. 2. Paula toca el piano bien pero su Hermana, Inés, no toca bien. Paula toca que Inés. 3. Alejandro nació en 1980 y Juan Luis nació en Juan Luis es que Alejandro. 4. Ignacio practica el tenis mucho. Su hermano, Benjamín, nunca practica. Benjamín juega que Ignacio. 3
4 Comparisons of Equality The following constructions are used with comparisons of equality: I. tan + adjective + como adverb as as II. tanto/a/os/as + noun(s) + como as much/many as III. verb + tanto como as much as Make a comparison of equality: 1. Tengo 10 manzanas y 10 naranjas. 2. Corro muy rápido. Mi amigo, José, es rápido también. 3. Generalmente, estudio español por una hora cada noche. Estudias por una hora también. 4. Hay 15 sillas y 15 mesas en la clase. 5. Normalmente, duermo por 8 horas cada noche. Isabel duerme por 8 horas también. 4
5 Los Gemelos (Twins): Paco y Pedro son gemelos. Son iguales en su apariencia pero tienen persoanlidades diferentes. Lee la descripción de ellos y haz 5 comparaciones: 2 de igualdad y 3 de desigualdad. Paco y Pedro son altos, guapos y delgados. Pedro es muy atlético y tiene muchos amigos. Le gusta ir al cine y hablar con los amigos. Él es muy extrovertido. Paco también tiene muchos amigos pero es un poco tímido. Le gusta leer y tiene muchos libros. Es activo pero no le gustan mucho los deportes. 5
6 Superlatives (los superlativos) Superlatives are used to state the best/worst/most/least of a category. He is the best student in the class. She is most athletic player on the team. Superlatives are formed by making the following constructions: el/la/los/las + noun + más/menos + adjective + de Enrique es el jugador más valioso del equipo. Enrique is the most valuable player of the team. Ella es la persona más estudiosa que conozco. She is the most studious person that I know. Irregular Superlatives: Adjective bueno/a (good) malo/a (bad) viejo (old) joven (young) grande (big) pequeño/a (small) Comparative Form el/la mejor (best) el/la peor (worst) el/la mayor (oldest) el/la menor (youngest) el/la mayor (biggest) el/la menor (smallest) *When grande and pequeño refer to size, not age, they are regular. Ex: Mi hermano Paco es el más grande de nosotros. My brother Paco is the oldest of us. La camineta roja es la camioneta más grande de todo. The red truck is the biggest one of all. *With superlatives, the noun may also be omitted. Ex: Conoces a esa chica allí? Ella es la más elegante de la fiesta. 6

Comparisons of Inequality The following construction is used with adjectives, adverbs, and nouns: más/menos + adjective + que adverb noun Sandra es más alta que Isabel. Raúl corre más rápido que Enrique. Tengo menos tiempo que tú. *Remember to make the adjectives agree in number and gender with the subject. Carolina es más artística que Amanda.
