He is always happy and has a big smile that lights up a room. He is full of energy and enjoys listening to music, dancing and going for walks. He lives with his parents, gets along well with his siblings and likes spending time with his family. Ivan is already bilingual (Spanish/English) and is always ready to learn new things. He enjoys and loves going to school. Ivan attends Crawford High School where he is popular among his peers. This year, he was honored to be nominated for homecoming king. Then, he danced the night away! The other boys who might have been king bowed out when they heard that Ivan had been nominated. One of his classmates shared that he felt it would be right for Ivan to win and said, He s outgoing. He s friendly. He deserves it. Ivan s smile and pride best describe how much being homecoming king means to him. He was crowned during halftime at Crawford High School homecoming game. His reign as homecoming king continued throughout Saturday night s homecoming dance. He was dressed in a black tuxedo and rode around the field in a convertible with the homecoming queen at his side, waving to hundreds of cheering people holding signs that read, We love Ivan. His smile could only be matched by the bright California sun.

2 Message f r o m t h e D i r e c t o r Carlos Flores Executive Director Our process of strategic planning is not an academic exercise; it is critical to the viability of our agency and the effective fulfillment of our mission. Knowing where you re going is essential before you take the first step. Choosing a clear direction is even more important during this difficult time of economic uncertainty and considerable change. As we chart our course and navigate over difficult terrain our compass is steadfast in the pursuit of our mission: To serve and empower persons with developmental disabilities and their families to achieve their goals with community partners. We began our strategic planning with a candid assessment of the San Diego Regional Center s strengths and weaknesses as well as the external opportunities and threats to our system. We matched our strengths to the opportunities while addressing our weaknesses and external threats and developed the following three strategic directions: To identify and communicate the benefits of San Diego Regional Center to broaden and strengthen our support base. To improve our partnership relationship with clients and families and provide access to quality and appropriate services and supports. To provide a greater emphasis on staff training and professional development. In the process of asking many stakeholders about the benefits associated with the San Diego Regional Center we were able to capture a profound appreciation for our service delivery system from clients, parents, employees, service providers and community partners. A white paper was generated from these reports, and other sources of information, to serve as the basis for communicating the value of the San Diego Regional Center. In a recent client and family survey outstanding levels of satisfaction were reported regarding the quality and appropriateness of services delivered by the San Diego Regional Center. Ranging from 83% to 96% of the clients and family members reported that they were treated with respect and courtesy, were provided with relevant information, and their Individual Family Service Plans and Individual Program Plans included valuable services and supports. Based on a recent employee satisfaction survey, we are fortifying our professional development and training. To ensure consistency in staff competency a learning management system is being created that will provide a coherent and comprehensive training program with both online and instructor led training. In response to State Budget Act trailer bills, our next important goal is to improve the quality and availability of services and supports for our complex clients for whom it has been historically difficult to find resources to meet their needs. The recent changes in laws and regulations have made this proactive initiative more important than ever. During a time of great uncertainty, the San Diego Regional Center continues to strategize how to ultimately best serve persons with developmental disabilities to live productive and satisfying lives as valued members of their communities. 2 communicator winter

3 Foundation for Developmental Disabilities Launches the Holiday Fundraising Drive CAN YOU HELP? As we prepare to celebrate the upcoming holiday season, we recognize the many gifts that we have enjoyed this past year. We also recognize others who may not have been as fortunate during these challenging economic times. The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities works throughout the year to provide support for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy and other developmental disabilities to live more full, productive and satisfying lives. For example, The Foundation is working to expand the options for higher level education for individuals with developmental disabilities. The Foundation supports the College Bound Program, in collaboration with UCP, San Diego Regional Center, and Area Board XIII, which offers training for college life for people with developmental disabilities. In the words of Moises Baron, University of San Diego Staff: This program is unique in that it provides an opportunity for individuals with disabilities to experience college life and learn about services, supports, and the skills necessary to succeed. Our institution was able to witness first hand its positive impact on the participants and their families. For many of them, this program kindled the realization that a postsecondary education could be an option in their future. A parent commented: The fact that this week has opened his eyes that college may be possible gives me great hope as a parent. One of the clients who participated had this to say, Thank you for the chance to go to college, I really appreciate the chance to attend and learn. In addition, the Foundation continues to provide assistance with important, urgent and emergency needs that are not funded elsewhere such as creating affordable housing opportunities; training opportunities in health, safety, personal growth and self-advocacy; and scholarships for students who are studying in preparation to enter the field of developmental disabilities in San Diego and Imperial counties. Here is what one recipient of a Foundation Scholarship wrote: I was both surprised and honored to receive the scholarship from your organization I thank you for investing in my future and I look forward to beginning a career that can serve those with developmental disabilities. When we all have so much to be thankful for, we hope it is gratifying to read how much your past contributions have meant. Your support makes a difference in the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families. We thank you and hope you will consider supporting the Foundation in your holiday giving this year. 4 Fire Safety in the Season for Sharing Fire safety is especially important during the holiday season. Here are some tips to keep your family safe and enjoy the holidays. PREVENTING CHRISTMAS TREE FIRES Live Christmas tree fire hazards: Special fire safety precautions need to be taken when keeping a live tree in the house. A burning tree can rapidly fill a room with fire and deadly gases. When choosing a tree, check to make sure the needles are green and hard to pull off the branches. The needles should not break if the tree has been freshly cut. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. If many needles fall off, the tree has been cut too long, has dried out, and is a fire hazard. Do not place your tree close to heat because heat will dry out the tree causing it to burn. Do not put your live tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times. Artificial Christmas trees: If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant. HOLIDAY LIGHTS Maintain your holiday lights: Inspect holiday lights each year for damaged wires. Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory. Do not overload electrical outlets: Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Make sure to check the wires they should not be warm to the touch. Do not leave holiday lights on unattended. HOLIDAY DECORATIONS Use only nonflammable decorations: All decorations should be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from fireplaces, candles and heat vents. Never put wrapping paper in a fireplace: Wrapping paper is extremely flammable and may result in a very large quick burning fire that shoots off dangerous sparks and embers. CANDLE CARE If you use candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down. Never leave the house with candles burning. Never put lit candles on a tree: Trees can easily catch on fire whether they are fresh or artificial. Finally, as in every season, have working smoke alarms with fresh batteries. Know when and how to call for help. And remember to practice your home escape plan. Eating Healthy During the Holidays The holiday season is just around the corner. The days are shorter, people are indoors more and not as active. There are holiday parties, dinners and social events. It is easy to gain weight during this time of year. Remember that you have control over yourself and what you put in your mouth. It is easier to keep the pounds off than trying to burn the inches off afterward. x Here are some simple suggestions on how to eat healthier this year. The first is to snack but, instead of eating a chocolate bar, have baby carrots or a piece of fruit. Eating small meals frequently helps avoid hunger cravings that lead to impulsive eating. Before heading out to a social engagement, nibble on some veggies. Drinking water helps a person feel full and resist the urge to eat. x Being conscientious and mindful of what you are eating helps you slow down the pace of your eating. It takes time for the stomach to tell your brain that it is full. Concentrating on what you are eating and thoroughly chewing the food, helps you feel satisfied with what you have eaten and avoid overeating. x If you do a lot of eating out, it is easy to consume too many calories in a single meal. Remember that eating is not a competition to see how fast you can eat or how many plates of food you can finish. x Be wary of high calorie foods (dips, chips, cheeses, sauces and gravies, sweets, fruit juices, alcoholic beverages and nuts). Remember portion control. Divide your plate into quarters, a quarter for each food group proteins, grains, veggies and fruits. You can have a serving of dairy on the side. x Don t feel obligated to eat an additional helping or to scrape the plate clean. Eat until you are satisfied and stop. People respect a person who is in control of themselves and this includes their eating habits. In the long run, you will be happier with yourself and so will your body. 4 communicator winter

6 celebrating our success Mirian Mirian is a brave and positive 14-year-old who is a beacon of hope, perseverance and determination. In 2006, Mirian was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in her left thigh. After chemotherapy and a medication regimen failed to defeat the tumor, doctors determined that they had to replace Mirian s thigh with a thigh prosthetic. After surgery, during physical therapy while attempting to walk without the use of a walker, Mirian s prosthetic broke prompting doctors to decide that her leg had to be amputated. Prior to her second surgery, Mirian s only question to the doctor was, Will I be able to walk again without a walker? The doctor responded, Yes you will. With these words of encouragement, Mirian was willing to let the doctor proceed with the surgery. Throughout her ordeal, Mirian has maintained an incredible positive attitude. It is this positive attitude that has gotten her through. Amazingly, Mirian often calmed others who were worried about her. Mirian comforted her mom, telling her not to be sad and that everything will be okay. Since her amputation, Mirian is doing very well. Her body is now cancer free. She is walking short distances with her new prosthetic leg. With the help of Access Medical, she is in the process of receiving a new pink motorized wheelchair to help her move around at school, for when she goes on outings with her mom, and to make her more independent. According to Mirian s SDRC service coordinator, With such hurdles in life, Mirian is the most positive person I have ever met. Keita Keita, a tech-savvy 14-year-old, benefits greatly from using an ipad at both school and home. Several years ago, Keita didn t have an ipad of his own. Very often, he borrowed his brother s. One day, unintentionally, Keita dropped his brother s ipad and it broke. His father realized that not only did his brother need a new one, but Keita needed an ipad or some kind of computer-type device of his own, and that was expensive. Keita and his dad took a trip to the Apple Store and dad asked, Do you have an indestructible device that would be better for my son? He was told that they didn t have anything indestructible. After some discussion, the store manager approached and suggested they send an to Steve Jobs directly. Keita s dad did send an to Mr. Jobs stating that he was the father of a child with autism and explained that he was looking for a replacement ipad or similar device that would be less fragile. Much to his surprise, he received a response from Mr. Jobs. The two of them had a conversation by about the importance of creating a less fragile device. They discussed making a case that would make the ipad and similar devices stronger to be more appropriate for people with disabilities. Mr. Jobs thanked Keita s dad for his input and suggestions. He also sent Keita a new ipad that he uses all the time. Keita, his family and teachers are grateful for Mr. Jobs kindness. Alonso Alonso is an 8-year-old boy who has autism. He is cared for and supported by his loving mother and family. Last May, Alonso s teacher at Jamacha Elementary School wrote a letter to East County Posse and in June, he was chosen to be a recipient of an ipad. Now, Alonso has the opportunity to use an ipad at school and at home. The device allows him to communicate his wants and needs, which reduces the inappropriate and disruptive behaviors he previously exhibited in his classrooms. This is a big step for Alonso and his family. He and his mother are extremely appreciative for the opportunity for Alonso to improve his communication skills. This is a wonderful example of how organizations and families can work together to make our community a better place for all. (East County Posse aims to help the people of East County help themselves, offering assistance to those who might not qualify for other aid programs. The Posse fills a special niche in the East County community.) 6 communicator winter

7 celebrating our success North County Support Group for Spanish Speaking Parents East County Sibling Support Group FDD Run Walk & Roll 5K/1 Mile Grupo de Apoyo Entre Padres is a support group for Spanish speaking parents and SDRC clients that meets twice each month on Thursday evenings at the SDRC San Marcos office. This group, led by service coordinators Claudia Canseco, Noemi Kelsey, Bernard Monterroso and Ana Silva, provides support to parents and helps empower them with current information and resources. It is an opportunity for parents to learn more about their child s disability so they can provide appropriate support and access resources they need. Upcoming activities include Parentto-Parent Training pertaining to the stages of grief and loss; Conservatorship Training; and a Legal Aid presentation on Immigration Laws and Parent Rights. Through this support group, Spanish speaking parents have become more educated about supporting their child and more active in the community. For example, this group organized their own Autism Walk team. They have created their own support network, sharing resources and information with each other to better support their children and families. For more information, call Growing up with a brother or sister with special needs is often difficult. Siblings can feel left out or jealous of the attention their brother or sister receives from parents and other family members. Being the sibling of a child with special needs also has positive aspects such as increased maturity, increased tolerance of others and enhanced communication skills. It is important to know that siblings want to have a positive relationship with their brother or sister. They also have a lifelong need for information in order to understand their sibling s disability. SDRC offers sibling groups that provide an opportunity to meet and talk with other siblings who deal with similar feelings and situations. Besides talking about issues such as bullying and having to look after their brother or sister, they can share good times, too. Sibling groups provide activities to: Acknowledge feelings and let them know that their feelings are normal and similar to those of other siblings. Learn coping strategies and self-help techniques for dealing with difficult situations and feelings. Enhance knowledge about their brother or sister s disabilities and the professionals and services who work with their families. The East County Sibling Support Group is held on the third Wednesday of the month at the SDRC Santee office. Call Maria Lizaola at for more information. The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities, serving San Diego and Imperial counties, is a resource for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Support is provided when needed services are not available from public or private resources. The Foundation held a Run Walk & Roll 5K/1 mile event to help raise funds in June at Liberty Station, San Diego. There was a total of 258 attendees, and the Foundation raised approximately $10,000. All proceeds went to the Foundation programs that provide support to those in need of assistance in emergency or urgent situations. Top fundraisers received prizes and everyone received a medal for participation. The event was successful and the planning team did an excellent job of organizing this fun event. Kamaria Allen stated, It takes a lot of work but we had a good team. In photo: East County Familias Unidas participated as a team (Spanish Speaking parent support group) communicator winter
