Lengua adicional a español II Topic 8 What is your neighborhood like? Lesson Objectives Learn the use of there is/ there are/ some/ any/ one. Talk about contracted pronunciation of there is and there are. Review quantifiers how much vs. how many. 1

Introduction I wish I had a place like yours! According to the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center: The term neighborhood has many meanings and uses. For example, neighborhood can be used to refer to the small group of houses in the immediate vicinity of one s house or to a larger area with similar housing types and market values. You have all lived in a neighborhood in your life since you were born, or be part of one. As mere human you all try to keep your neighborhood, clean, organized, with the best company, and secure. You may not always succeed at all these, what finally really matters is that you tried. This new chapter is your new opportunity to get back on to the topics about quantifiers, such as: there is, there are, any, some, contracted pronunciation, and sentences. You will also review a follow up topic called how much vs. how many. This is not a war about nouns and word is about making sure you are clear on the material you review and that you understand as well as it is clear to you what is explained during class, do participate if you are doubtful about any exercise. 2

8.1 There is, there are; one, any, some We use There is or There are to express that something exists or that it does not exist. The real subject usually comes after it (There is or There are). Use There is for singular nouns and things you cannot count. Examples: There is a lake by the highway. There is a witch in the cemetery. There is rice on the container. There is ice cubes on the glass. There is in the beach. 3

Use There are with a plural subject and for plural nouns. There are two thousand people in the stadium. There are 25 students in the class. There are three cars parked in the garage. There are two fish in the fishbowl. There are five televisions in my house. Negative sentences with There is and There are. Use this form to use the opposite of a statement, the negative form of something. Use: SINGULAR PLURAL NEGATIVE CONTRACTED FORM There is not There s not There isn t Or There are not There aren t 4

Examples: SINGULAR There is not water in the bottle. There s not a car parked by my house. There isn t anyone that has a red shirt in the park. There s not a single student in my class. There isn t a class that I do not enjoy! There is not enough milk for a milkshake. There isn t a lake by your house. There s not a laptop on the desk. PLURAL There aren t many birds in the tree There are not enough eggs for breakfast. There aren t any tables in the classroom. There are not teacher to give the class at 7pm. There aren t any students in the class paying attention. There are not chairs in the room. There aren t clean shocks in the drawer. There are not cars in the drive way. 5

Interrogative Form. To make questions with there is or there are just change the order of the sentence at the beginning. Examples: INTERROGATIVE FORM Is there a balcony in the second floor? Is there a bank near your apartment? Are there four telephone lines in the office? Is there any sugar in the sugar pot? Are there any glasses in the cupboard? Are there any chairs in your room? Is there anyone that has a pen here? Are there any students that completed the work? Is there a car parked in the driveway? Yes and No answers with There is, and There are. YES AND NO SHORT ANSWERS Is there a car parked by my house? Are there four telephone lines in the office? Is there any sugar in the sugar pot? Are there any glasses in the cupboard? Are there any chairs in your room? Is there anyone that has a pen here? Is there a car parked in the driveway? No, there is not- Yes, there are. No, there isn t No, there aren t Yes, there are. Yes, there aren t Yes, there is. 6

Neutral Quantifiers. Some and any are both quantifiers and articles. In many contexts some is the plural indefinite article, the plural of "a" or "an"; but more often, some implies a limited quantity. It is used for affirmative statements. Some is replaced with any in negative and interrogative contexts. One is used as a quantifier that determines an amount of something that is countable. Examples: SOME, ANY, ONE Is there a balcony in the second floor? Yes, there is one upstairs. Is there a bank near tour apartment? No there isn t one. Are there any apples in the basket? Yes, there are some. Is there any sugar in the sugar pot? Yes, there is some. Are there any glasses in the cupboard? Yes, there is one. Are there any chairs in your room? No there aren t any. Is there anyone that has a pen here? There are some here in my bag. Is there any money left on my savings account? No, there isn t any money left. There are some visitors coming next week. There are not any peaches on the kitchen There will be some students taking summer school. There are not any pen in the office. There is one classmate that does do his work. 7

8.2 Contracted pronunciation of there is and there are in sentences You may pronounce the contracted way of there is and there are in sentences, pay close attention to contract the first to the second word when if a written contraction does not apply. Examples: There is - There s /ders/ There are - There are /der ar/ Examples: Is there a church around the corner? Yes, there s one on Jackson St. Are there any children playing at the park? No, there are not, they are all eating lunch. 8

8.3 Quantifiers; how many vs. how much How much Non-countable. How many Countable items. HOW MUCH How much? Is used with uncountable nouns, is generally used in negative statements and questions. It s uncommon to use much in positive statements. For example: How much time do you have? I don t have much time. How much money do you have? I don t have much money. HOW MANY? How many? Is used with plural countable nouns. It may also be used in positive statements. Example: How many bananas do you have? How many friends are coming? Many people are coming on Sunday. How many siblings do you have? 9

Closing Ideas are like flowers that blossom during the summer, you all have new ideas and thoughts that are unique, when you say what you think to other you are cultivating culture and socializing. As a fresh blossom from a green garden your brain is absorbing all new vocabulary information you have been reviewing these last couple of weeks. You have learned on this topic, a very important English rule about there is and there are, you will see how handy they come specially when referring to questions. You have also continued with the practice of quantifiers, some, any, one for example which may be applied in daily life for any conversation. How many and how much will give you a much more clear idea on talking about countable or non countable subjects. This is the last topic of chapter two, you will need to review all the information you have learned so far to be best prepared for the next module! It will talk present perfect, more adverbs, and much more new vocabulary that will help you on your daily life conversations from school, work, and even when talking to you comrades. 10
