STUDY GUIDE FOR SPANISH I Prof. Escobar Definite and indefinite articles In English Definite articles = _THE Indefinite articles = A, AN, SOME Spanish Definite articles Singular: Masculine: _EL Feminine: _LA Plural: Masculine: _LOS Feminine: _LAS Spanish Indefinite articles Singular: Masculine: _UN Feminine: _UNA Plural: Masculine: _UNOS Feminine: _UNAS Definite and indefinite Articles must agree in and in Definite Indefinite _EL chico _UN chico _LOS chicos _UNOS chicos Definite _LA casa _LAS casas Indefinite _UNA casa _UNAS casas Articles and Adjectives always agree in NUMBER and in _GENDER the nouns they describe Definite Indefinite _LA casa bonit_a UNA casa bonit_a W _EL chico baj_o LAS casas bonit_as LOS chicos baj_os UN chico baj_o UNAS casas bonit_as UNOS chicos baj_os Saludos y Despedidas/Greetings and Farewells in Spanish 1
In Spanish we have different forms of greetings, which can differ depending on the context, the time of day or the person who led the greetings. Example: Hola (informal) - Para cualquier hora del día. (El saludo más común en español) Buenos días - Hasta las 12 (mediodía) Buenas tardes - Desde las 12 (mediodía) hasta las ocho de la tarde. Buenas noches - Desde el atardecer hasta la mañana. Que tengas (tú) buenos días / buenas tardes / buenas noches. (informal) Que tenga (ud.) buenos días... (formal) Que gusto de verte (informal) Que gusto de verlo (formal) Tanto tiempo sin verte Asking for the welfare of someone Cómo estás (tú)? - informal Cómo está Usted? - formal Qué tal? Cómo has estado? - (se refiere a tu salud o eventos nuevos de tu vida privada) Cómo te ha ido? Cómo te va? (informal) Cómo le va? (formal) Cómo está(n) tu? hermano(s), novia, familia, padre(s), etc. Response: Bien / un poco enfermo / tranquilo no tengo problemas. Ask for information about what someone has done lately. These questions ask about new things that the other person (friend, acquaintance, family, etc.) has done in a course of time in which you have not seen the person. Qué has hecho (últimamente)? 2
Qué hay de nuevo? Qué (me) cuentas? (Se refiere a las cosas que has hecho y cómo han resultado) Response: fo example, Aprobé todas mis pruebas, no he hecho nada interesante, etc. VERB HAY As expressed in the class, the verb hay (which stems out of the verb haber) is used to exprssed "there is" or "there are". This verb is used to express existence while the forms of the verb estar typically está (singular) or están (plural) is used is used to describe location. As an example, look at the following simple sentence: "There is a book." The English is ambiguous. For example to highlight that a pencil exists we would say hay una pluma but if we want to say that the pen is in a certain location we would use the verb for of estar. For example La pluma está allí (The pen is there.) Tener means "to have", but it is also used to form certain expressions ("to have to do something"), and certain conditions ("to be hungry, thirsty, hot," etc.) Consult 1.3 of Unidad I. Tener yo Tú Él, ella, usted nosotros ellos, ellas, Uds. tengo tienes tiene tenemos tienen Present Tense. Verb necesitar Yo Tu El/Ella necesito necesitas necesita 3
Nosotros Vosotros/as (Ustedes) Ellos/as necesitamos necesitáis necesitan The verb necesitar means to need (I need, you need, he/she/it needs, we need, you need, they need). We have already seen various uses of this verbs in this course so far but as I have mentioned before, you need to be able to construct negative Spanish sentences with the insertion of no and questions in Spanish (with added question tone of voice only). Please refer to page Lecture notes. Necesitar: to need (yo) necesito: I need (tú) necesitas: you need (usted) necesita: you need (formal) (él/ella) necesita: he/she needs (nosotros) necesitamos: we need (vosotros) necesitáis: you (group) need (ustedes) necesitan: you (group) need (formal) (ellos) necesitan: they need Necesito un taxi: I need a taxi. Necesito + infinitivo: I need to Necesito ir: I need to go No necesito ir: I don t need to go Necesitas algo?: do you need anything? The verb querer 4
Querer, in Spanish it means "to want" or "to love". As we saw in class, this verb r changes to an rr. And sometimes, for no apparent reason, the quer- stem changes to quis-. Please refer to 1.6 of Unidad I. PRESENT TENSE OF THE VERB. Yo Tu El/Ella Nosotros Vosotros/as (Ustedes) Ellos/as quiero quieres quiere queremos queréis quieren Examples: 1. Qué quieres tomar? 2. Quiero tomar un té. 3. Quieres una cacola? 4. No gracias. No quiero cocacola. (Please refer to page 32.) Present tense of the verb Llevar The verb Llevar is one of the verbs that can give us a headache but as I always say: you can do it! This verb is used in so many different ways. Here are some examples: SPANISH ENGLISH EXAMPLES IN SPANISH TRANSLATION llevas la guía para nuestro Do you bring the guide Llevar algo To bring, take, have something viaje a España?. Yo llevo una botella de agua. Qué llevas en la book for our trip to spain. I take a bottle of awter. What do you have in your maleta? suitcase? 5
Llevar - transportar To carry Necesitas ayuda para llevar tu equipaje? Do you need help to carry your luggage. Llevaba un gorro. She was wearing a hat. Llevar (puesto) To wear Please refer to page Llevaba puesto un vestido largo. She was wearing a long dress. Yo Tu (Usted) El/Ella Nosotros Vosotros/as (Ustedes) Ellos/as llevo llevas lleva llevamos lleváis llevan Possessive Adjectives Possessive adjectives indicate ownership. Although they express the owners of the nouns they modify, they must match the gender and number of the nouns they describe, not the gender and number of the owners. Page Remember that the possessive adjective must match the noun being owned, NOT the owner. Person Possessive Adj. my mi or mis 6
Person Possessive Adj. your (if you = tú) tu or tus your (if you = Ud. or Uds.) su or sus your (if you = vosotros or vosotras) vuestro, vuestra, vuestros, or vuestras his su or sus her su or sus our (if we = nosotros or nosotras) nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, or nuestras Check the following examples: Yo form : My mi (singular): mi hermano mi hermana mis (plural): mis hermanos mis hermanas Tú form: Your tu (singular) tu hermano tu hermana tus (plural): tus hermanos tus hernanas Él, ella, usted form: His, her, your (polite form) su (singular): su hermano su hermana sus (plural) sus hermanos sus hermanas Ellos, ellas, ustedes form: Their, your (all y'all's)(polite form) su (singular): su hermano su hermana sus (plural): sus hermanos sus hermanas 7
Parte cultural As shown in the documentary presented in class: The Iberian Peninsula also known as Iberia is made of: Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and France; as well as Gibraltar. The Spanish language originates from Spain which was know as Hispania. Early ruler was Wittiza the Visigothic King of Hispania from 694 until his death. The end of Hispania: The North African Muslims, referred to as Moors, conquered Hispania ( ), and called the area they controlled Al-Andalus. Al-Andalus was the Muslim cultural domain and territory occupying at its peak most of what are today Spain and Portugal. Important thing to know: What the Moors bring to Hispania? Who was Abd al-rahman I? What was the Caliphate of Córdoba? Architecture What is the Alhambra? Please follow the link for more information on the Alhambra PLEASE REMEMBER YOU WILL ONLY BE TESTED ON UNIDAD 1 and the documentary for the cultural part. 8
